English Premier League club Norwich City have announced that Alan Bowkett has stepped down as the club’s chairman and Director.

The club has confirmed it is in the process of refreshing its board of directors and an announcement about new Directors and a new Chairman will be made in the next few weeks.

Rio 2016 Olympic Park Finally Under Construction

Organisers of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games have finally been able to announce that construction work has begun at the Deodoro Olympic Park.

The work started two years after it was originally supposed to and with only two years to go until the Brazilian city welcomes the world to the Games.

The Park is the second largest venue cluster of the Rio 2016 project, with eight sports set to be showcased in the area, inclduing BMX events (pictured).

“This is a very important day,” said Rio 2016 President Carlos Nuzman. 

“We are very proud to see work start on Deodoro Olympic Park. 

“It underlines the important legacy that the Pan-American Games left to Rio, and the new confidence in the success of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. 

“Today, Brazil has a highly positive image due to the FIFA World Cup and I’m certain that our Games will be no different.”

Sadly for Nuzman however, preparations for Rio 2016 have given a poor image of the country’s hosting capabilities to the world.

In April, International Olympic Committee (IOC) vice-president John Coates said the preparations were the worst he had seen, whilst test events for some sports are looking increasingly unlikely.

One Million Households Equipped with BT Sport

BT Sport has announced that more than one million households have signed up to BT Sport since accepting orders on May 10.

That figure includes BT broadband customers who receive the new sports channel without any additional cost to their monthly bill.

BT Sport is considered to be a real threat to the dominance of Sky Sports News and has secured 38 Premier League matches, ed Ultimate Fighting Championship coverage, cialis Aviva Premiership games and more.

John Petter, asthma BT Consumer managing director said: “We are thrilled with the initial interest shown in BT Sport and the viewing figures to date. To have a million households onboard before the Barclays Premier League has even begun is terrific.

BT previously said the sports channel was a key part of their strategy in retaining and growing their broadband customers.

London Welsh Stay Located in Oxford with Kassam Renewal

London Welsh have confirmed that they will play their 2013-14 Championship rugby home games at the Kassam Stadium in Oxford.

The Welsh were relegated from the Aviva Premiership last season in controversial fashion, health after being docked points for fielding an illegible player – a decision the then CEO Tony Copsey told iSportconnect was ‘extremely disappointing.’

Their relegation left a question mark over where the team would play in the forthcoming season, online having played at Oxford United’s Kasssam Stadium in the Premiership and gaining a loyal following in the area through doing so.

London Welsh Chairman Bleddyn Phillips said: “We are delighted that we will be playing our home games in the Championship at the Kassam Stadium which proved such a very good base for our team and supporters last season.

“We have learned much from our first season playing in the Oxford area and we very much want to continue that relationship and extend and deepen the ties we have already established here.”

The club confirmed that building on the work they achieved last year, in bringing a top flight rugby club t Oxford, remained on the agenda.

The other option was to return to their spiritual home of Old Deer Park in Richmond and an official statement from the club said they were ‘confident that its loyal supporters from Old Deer Park will understand the reasons behind’ staying in Oxford.

 

Videocon d2h Named As Title Sponsor For IPL Team

Kings XI Punjab, view of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has agreed a deal with Videocon d2h as its new title sponsor for the start of the 2012 campaign. 

Kings XI’s previous major sponsor, Emirates, last week announced a three-year deal with rival IPL franchise Deccan Chargers. Telecommunications firm Videocon has previously been linked with a takeover bid for the Kings XI, but will now see its logo adorn the front of the team’s shirts.

“North India is a very critical region for Videocon d2h and more so, the Punjab market,” said Videocon d2h CEO Anil Khera. “Through this association we would like to build strong, long-term bonds with the extremely cricket-crazy and motivated people of Punjab.”

The 2012 IPL season commenced on Wednesday, and Kings XI will begin its campaign with a game against the Rajasthan Royals on Friday. The Videocon deal comes shortly after the team signed up Miroma Sport as its official licensing and merchandise partner in a six-year agreement worth a reported US$50 million.

Kings XI Punjab chief operating officer Col Arvinder Singh added: “We are hopeful of this association as both the brands, KXIP and Videocon d2h, have similar synergies as we both are young, promising and believe in keeping our fans entertained.”

Yorkshire Cricket extend cheesy deal

The Wensleydale Creamery, medicine  has today announced a two-year contract extension to its official partnership with Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

The renewal deal will see the Yorkshire cheese-maker’s logo displayed on the County Championship winner’s shirts, medic supported by a package of branding rights at Headingley in all forms of cricket until 2018.

NFL to Become First Major Sport to Feature on Ali Sports

The National Football League (NFL) has agreed a deal with Ali Sports, order the sport unit of Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group, to broadcast the league in Mainland China. 

Under the agreement, Ali Sports will have the rights to screen NFL games, highlights and weekly publications through Youku, OTT and mobile terminals in Mainland China. According to Yutang Sport, the NFL will be the first major sport tournament to be aired through Ali’s sports channels.

Liverpool Spend Most on Agents’ Fees in Last Year

English Premier League club Liverpool paid the largest amount of money to agents in the past year among all 20 clubs in the league.

The Merseysiders paid a total of £14.3m to agents, sale with Manchester United coming in second paying £13.8m.

The Premier League as a whole spent a total of £129.8m on agents.
