London Welsh Stay Located in Oxford with Kassam Renewal

June 21, 2013

London Welsh have confirmed that they will play their 2013-14 Championship rugby home games at the Kassam Stadium in Oxford.

The Welsh were relegated from the Aviva Premiership last season in controversial fashion, health after being docked points for fielding an illegible player – a decision the then CEO Tony Copsey told iSportconnect was ‘extremely disappointing.’

Their relegation left a question mark over where the team would play in the forthcoming season, online having played at Oxford United’s Kasssam Stadium in the Premiership and gaining a loyal following in the area through doing so.

London Welsh Chairman Bleddyn Phillips said: “We are delighted that we will be playing our home games in the Championship at the Kassam Stadium which proved such a very good base for our team and supporters last season.

“We have learned much from our first season playing in the Oxford area and we very much want to continue that relationship and extend and deepen the ties we have already established here.”

The club confirmed that building on the work they achieved last year, in bringing a top flight rugby club t Oxford, remained on the agenda.

The other option was to return to their spiritual home of Old Deer Park in Richmond and an official statement from the club said they were ‘confident that its loyal supporters from Old Deer Park will understand the reasons behind’ staying in Oxford.
