Rome Ruled Out as Italy’s 2024 Olympic Candidate City

October 4, 2013

Rome has been ruled out as Italy’s candidate city to bid for the 2024 Olympic Games because the city is close to bankruptcy.

Reports suggest that Rome’s Mayor Ignazio Marino said the Italian capital’s finances have made a bid almost impossible.

The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) met on Thursday to discuss a 2024 bid but ANSA reported that Roberto Maroni, story President of the province of Lombardy said: “Rome is on the brink of bankruptcy. A city in these financial straits cannot be considered a candidate.”

Rome also backed out of its 2020 bid due to economic problems.
