“With athletes from more than 60 nations and worldwide visibility, the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships are one of the major sporting events in winter,” says Luca de Meo, Member of the Board of Management for Marketing and Sales of AUDI AG. “We look forward to continuing to partner with the athletes beyond the next World Championships and to bring the Audi brand closer to all the spectators in an emotional and top-class sporting environment.”

Audi has previously accompanied the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in St. Moritz (SUI) in 2003, Bormio (ITA) in 2005, Åre (SWE) in 2007, Val d’Isère (FRA) in 2009 and in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 2011. The event in Schladming, Austria, will begin on 4th February 2013. Beaver Creek/Vail (USA) has been elected for 2015, and St. Moritz again for 2017.

Gian Franco Kasper, FIS President, welcomes the extension of the cooperation: “Audi has been partnering with FIS for the past decade and has done much for winter sport during this time. The brand’s commitment goes beyond the role of a sponsor. With fresh ideas, Audi continually gives the competitions new impulses. Together with the EBU, we look forward to three more World Championships together.”

Ingolfur Hannesson, Head of Sports Rights – Winter Sports, at the EBU, added: “On the part of the EBU we greatly valued the excellent and professional cooperation with Audi on the occasion of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and are delighted to extend this partnership for another two editions, until St. Moritz in 2017. In the 2002/2003 season, the Audi FIS Ski World Cup celebrated its premiere under the symbol of the four rings. Earlier this year, this commitment was extended as well, until 2018. Manchester United Seeking Major Nike Extension

Manchester United are looking at securing the biggest sponsorship deal in football history in a potential £1bn Nike renewal.

The Daily Mail reports that negotiations have begun with Nike over a new deal. The old agreement, which was worth £303 million plus a profit of sales over 13 years, expires in 2015 but the paper claims that negotiations are about to get going for a similar long-term deal. Nike have an exclusive six-month window for negotiations that officially begins in February.

United have based the potential upsuge in sponsorship on two things: first, that their shirt sponsorship deal has risen six-fold since the old agreement was signed, and second that Rory McIlroy alone is to be given £156m for a 10-year deal to wear Nike clothes and have the company’s logos on his clubs.

United earlier this year revealed a £52 million shirt sponsorship deal with Chevrolet starting in the 2014/15 season.

Steven Falk, Director of Star Sports Marketing, suggested the owners may figure crucial in any potential deal.

“The Glazers have long been unhappy with the Nike deal they inherited with their buyout of the PLC which they consider restrictive and undervalued, he told iSportconnect.

“Several changes have been negotiated over the years but this is their first real opportunity to shape the deal they believe the value of the MU brand deserves.

“Given the length of the previous deal (13 years) and the importance of MU to the Nike football portfolio (it is second only to Brazil in terms of the number of replica shirts sold globally), the Glazers will wish to maximise the financial opportunity for the club and a billion dollar deal over an extended period may not be wide of the mark.”

“It is unlikely the owners will wish to use the proceeds of such a deal to pay down debt. As seen from the record breaking £47m deal for shirt sponsorship recently announced with Chevrolet and implied by Ed Woodward (MU’s Executive Vice Chairman and the Glazers’ man in London) in his interview with Sky this week, the club is comfortable with the current level of debt on the balance sheet.

The former Manchester United marketing director also looked at how this would affect Manchester United’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) status.

“Its aggressive commercial strategy is designed to ensure that sufficient revenue is generated to cover interest payments and the Nike deal will undoubtedly have a big part to play in this. An attractive by-product of this strategy will be compliance with UEFA’s FFP rules, not that this was ever a significant threat to MU given the owners’ preference to fund development from operating revenues rather than investing their own money in players,” he added.

Sunderland Extends Partnership with Local Ceiling Firm

Sunderland AFC have agreed to renew their partnership with local ceiling specialist CJ Ceilings for a second season under a business partnership initiative.

SAFC commercial director, Gary Hutchinson said: “Our Business Partnership initiative is about using our expertise and the unique opportunities that being associated with football affords to give companies an edge on their competitors and help them grow and develop their business through a unique medium.

“It’s a very competitive market for businesses at present and by working together with our key customers and providing them with a bespoke service we are helping to identify how their company can maximise the benefits of its association with the football club.”

CJ Ceilings, which was established more than 30 years ago, specialises in the supply and installation of suspended ceiling systems and dry-lining systems, along with all aspects of shop-fitting, office refurbishment, steel framed systems and fire protection.

Tampa Bay Championship Set to Remain on 2013 PGA Tour Calendar Despite No Title Sponsor

PGA Tour’s Tampa Bay Championship at Innisbrook is set to continue in 2013 despite no title sponsor.

The PGA is expected to release its 2013 schedule in the next few days, and the newly named Tampa Bay Championship will be played March 11-17, the same spot it has occupied since becoming part of the Florida Swing in 2007.

“We will be on the 2013 schedule,” Tampa Bay Championship tournament director Kevin Krisle said. “We are still actively seeking a title sponsor, and the economic times haven’t really changed. But the PGA Tour has a good track record and we’re confident we can find a title sponsor for the years to come.”

For the past four years, the tournament was called the Transitions Championship. But the Pinellas Park optical company decided not to renew its contract after the 2012 tournament. For the past year PGA officials and members of the Copperheads, who oversee the Palm Harbor tournament, have been trying to secure a title sponsor.

It is unclear what would happen to the tournament past 2013 if a title sponsor isn’t secured. PGA official Chris Smith said the Tour would have no comment until the schedule is officially released.

“We were confident that we would be on it,” Krisle said. “The players and the PGA like coming down here. We obviously want to be here for many more years to come.”

The PGA Tour will cover any costs of the tournament for 2013 that aren’t covered by sponsors. This is not the first time the tournament has been played without a title sponsor.

The tournament began in 2000 as the Tampa Bay Classic. In 2007, PODS came on board late as a title sponsor. Transitions Optical took over in June of 2008 as the title sponsor.

Luke Donald is the tournament’s defending champion.
