Turkey Cannot Host Olympics & Euro 2020 in Same Year says IOC President

IOC president Jacques Rogge has ruled out Turkey from hosting the Olympics and Euro 2020 soccer tournament in the same year.

Rogge made the comments to French news agency AFP, medicine saying: “On September 7 next year in Buenos Aires, if Istanbul is elected we will respectfully ask them not to host the European Championships.”

However, he acknowledged, there was little the IOC could do.

“Ultimately, it will be for the government to make their mind up but I would say the election would be conditional on not organizing another competition.”

Turkey submitted a bid for Euro 2020 last month and is so far the only candidate for the UEFA showpiece, scheduled just weeks prior to the Games. The strain on infrastructure for a quick turnaround on events is seen as potentially dooming for Istanbul’s Olympic bid.

In a statement released later in the day from Istanbul 2020, Turkish sports minister Suat K?l?ç said Istanbul is still on track to host the Olympics.

“Our Prime Minister announced the bid himself, and Istanbul 2020 retains the same support from the same highest level,” he said. “We will fulfil every requirement to win the right to host the Games, under the leadership of our Prime Minister.”

Streamworks Appoints Nigel Rushman to Advisory Board

Nigel Rushman, founder of global sports events and consulting company Rushmans has been appointed to the board of live streaming specialist Streamworks, signalling the opening of a major assault on the international digital sports market.

Rushman has worked on more than 500 events in 30 countries during more than 30 years in the sports sector and was a key member of the team that led Qatar’s successful bid for the FIFA 2022 World Cup Finals.

He has been appointed to spearhead the campaign to bring Streamworks’ industry-defining technology to the global sportscasting industry. Capitalising on the broadcasting sector’s history of failure when it comes to live-streaming events, Rushman will use his experience of turning major sporting occasions into profit making enterprises to introduce a viable solution to a struggling market.

“Let’s make no mistake about it: with only a very few exceptions, traditional broadcasters’ attempts to introduce live streaming of major events has been characterised by incompetence and abject failure. While demand from consumers continues to escalate, embarrassing farragoes like NBC’s miserable online coverage of the 2012 London Olympics remain typical of the low grade experience on offer to the global audience,” said Ray Mia, Streamworks’ Founder and CEO.

“What’s needed here isn’t a piecemeal solution or incremental improvements to the lacklustre technology currently being employed by these operations – what’s needed is a revolution driven by people and companies that are actually capable of making things happen. In that scenario, blending our undisputed expertise with Nigel’s experience as a big hitter in the world of live events is a no-brainer.”

Nigel Rushman commented:  “In the global entertainment era demand for access to live sport from around the world continues to escalate, yet the majority of streaming efforts fall far short of the experience consumers demand.  Streamworks’ proven high quality streaming technology is destined to play a central role in the commercial future of such events, and I’m excited to be part of it.”

Madrid 2020 Bid to Continue Despite Spanish Recession

Spain’s latest recesssion will not push Madrid to pull out of their 2020 bid, Theresa Zabell, the CEO behind the bid said.

Spain have been induced to streamline the euro zone’s fourth largest economy, reduce a huge public deficit and fix a banking system battered by a four-year economic slump and a burst property bubble.

Bidding for 2020 Olympics also began before their government pulled the plug on the candidacy in February, saying it could not provide financial guarantees as they worked towards heading off their own debt crisis.

Following Rome’s surprise withdrawal there have been concerns that Madrid’s bid could also be affected by the debt crisis in Spain, where the economy slipped into recession in the first quarter in late April.

“Madrid has absolutely no intention of backing out of bidding for the Games. This is not going to be Rome II,” the bid’s CEO of international relations Theresa Zabell told Reuters in an interview. “We will be in Buenos Aires next year with a strong bid.”

The International Olympic Committee will elect the winning bid for the world’s biggest multi-sports extravaganza in September 2013 in Argentina, with Istanbul, Azeri capital Baku, Qatar’s Doha and Tokyo also in the running.

Madrid is bidding for the third consecutive time after losing out to London for the 2012 Games and Rio de Janeiro for 2016.

“The economic situation is an extra item that did not exist in the last bids,” said Zabell, a winner of two Olympic sailing gold medals. “Bidding for the Olympic Games is not a cost. It is an investment in our country. Not only in material but also in morale.”

“Need the games”

Madrid’s bid has all but six venues already in place, but has decided to shift the focus from past bids on to the Games’ sporting aspect.

Madrid is also keen to push their capabilities as hosts and point to the fact that in the last ten years the city has played host to 85 European championships and 77 world championships.

“Few cities can boast of holding so many international events of such a large category,” she said.

In the coming two years the Spanish capital will host six more world championships for Olympic sports.

“We really need the Games. We have a high percent of unemployment and we need the Games to get the country moving,” Zabell said.

“Unemployment for people under 25 years is very high and they are the best qualified generation of people we have in the history of Spain and we need to give them their first job opportunity. There is no better force to change than the Games.”

Zabell said Madrid’s bid was also the only one from the heart of Europe and would provide a safe return after the first South American Games in 2016.

“New countries are trying to bid for the Games that traditionally did not bid before,” said Zabell.

“But I personally don’t think the Olympic Games can go from new countries (Brazil in 2016) to new countries. They have to come back to countries where they know the Games will be a quality experience.”

Triathlon Mixed Relay Included in Glasgow 2014 Programme

The Glasgow Commonwealth Games Committee have announced they have added Triathlon Mixed Relay, ITU’s exciting mixed gender format, to their sports programme for 2014.

The debut of the Mixed Relay comes four years earlier than anticipated after the discipline was voted onto the Commonwealth Games programme starting in 2018, at the Commonwealth Games General Assembly in St. Kitts & Nevis last November.

ITU then presented to the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee in hopes of having the Triathlon Mixed Relay as an optional addition to the sports programme of Glasgow 2014, the 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games. Today’s inclusion on the Glasgow programme is seen as a great boost for the development of the sport across the 71 Commonwealth nations around the globe.

The format was also recently accepted onto the programme of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, and was placed on the programme of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore with great success.

Marisol Casado, ITU President and IOC member, commented: “We are delighted the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee has embraced the Triathlon Mixed Relay. Triathlon is on currently on a high in the United Kingdom, and the Mixed Relay will offer an extra opportunity for the people of Glasgow to watch another thrilling and unpredictable event live on their city streets.”

Triathlon Mixed Relay consists of teams of four athletes: two men and two women, who will compete in the order of woman, man, woman, man. Each athlete completes a super-sprint triathlon of swimming, biking and running, before handing over to their next team mate. The first team across the finish line is the winner.

This action is proven to appeal to a young, entertainment-hungry audience. The recent Triathlon Mixed Relay World Championships in the Olympic city of Lausanne, Switzerland boasted its largest field ever, with representation from all five continents. According to research agency IFM, those World Championships-where Great Britain’s “Dream Team” cruised to gold-had over 571 million TV contacts, with over 93 hours of airtime and 253 broadcasts.

Dr. Sarah Springman, President of the British Triathlon Federation and Vice-President of ITU said, “ITU is delighted by the forward thinking of the CGF and the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee. Commonwealth athletes have, to date, won a great many Olympic and World Championship medals and we can expect fierce competition from the best triathletes in the world for this exciting inaugural event.”

The addition of the Mixed Relay is seen to have a minimal impact on the overall Games budget for Glasgow. The discipline allows the same venue to be reused at very little extra cost, and minimal changes and the shorter distances means that the event will have less impact on the city and require fewer and shorter road closures.

This latest success seems to strengthen ITU’s quest to get the Triathlon Mixed Relay event into the Olympic Games beginning with Rio 2016. ITU is bidding to get the discipline added to the programme of the Olympic Games and has already submitted a bid to the IOC.
