UEFA Partially Lift Malaga European Ban

May 22, 2013

UEFA has lifted the second year of Malaga’s European ban, though the club will still be prevented from competing in next season’s Europa League were they to qualify.

The La Liga club are banned from the next European competition they qualify for during the next four season as a result of delayed payments to creditors. Malaga are appealing against the ban to the Cour of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

UEFA’s initial ruling threatened to extend the ban by an additional year if the club had not proved that outstanding payments had been settled by March. Today’s decision by the UEFA Club Finanical Control Body (CFCB) confirms that Malaga had met these obligations and the second ‘conditional’ year ban would not be enforced.

Unless the initial one year ban is overruled by the CAS, Malaga will be barred from next season’s Europa League. They are currently occupy a qualifying position in the La Liga table with two games of the season remaining.
