South Africa Pondering Summer Olympics Bid

June 7, 2012

Sam Ramsamy, cialis  International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive board member has revealed the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) is considering bidding for the Summer Olympics.

Ramsamy noted that following the London 2012 Games this summer that SASCOC would begin talks with the government in an effort to gain support. South Africa was endeavoring to put together a 2020 bid however the government decided that the country’s pressing social needs were a priority.

He said that until the Games in London everyone was focused on performance of the team but once they were back that they would be making an announcement. Currently a process is being carried out to select the city that they would like to put forward.

As the potential 2020 bid slipped out of reach there has been talk of bidding for the Commonwealth Games in 2022 to use this event as a springboard for the Olympic Games. Several cities have been interested but no definite bid has emerged as yet.

Given the calendar time of the Olympic Games the optimal choice would be Durban, ampoule the city that hosted the IOC session just last summer to name a 2018 winter Games host city. Due to the considerably colder climate in South Africa Durban would offer the most summertime temperature. The FIFA World Cup that was hosted in South Africa in 2010 was a chilly event with fans packing coats and scarves.

Cape Town bid in 1997 against Rome, rx Buenos Aires, Stockholm and Athens for the 2004 Games that the Greeks won. Currently Buenos Aires is aggressively bidding for the 2018 summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) and will host the 2013 IOC session where the 2020 city will be decided as well as the next leader of the Olympic Movement when President Jacques Rogge steps down at the end of his second term.
