Barcelona Make Record Profit

June 27, 2012

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell yesterday said that the Catalan football giants had made a record profit of around 40mn euros ($50mn).

“This profit will be used to reduce the club’s debt, which will go down to around 340mn euros,” explained Rosell at his annual end-of-season evaluation.

Rosell added that Barca have around 40mn to spend on signings this summer, “though it is not necessary to spend all of that money.”

Citing the country’s difficult economic situation, he said the club will not increase season ticket prices for next season.

Regarding Barcelona’s debt and potential stadium renovations, Rosell said: “There are… things that need to happen, but they can’t happen until we reduce our debt. We’re taking a step backwards in order to take three steps forward. We will not create the Espai Barca and the Camp Nou and Palau Blaugrana renovations will not happen at this time.

“We can’t proceed with these projects at this moment, however, we will do them at a later date and the decision will be put to the club members by means of a club referendum. The decision to build a new stadium or renovate the Camp Nou is one we have to live with for the rest of our lives and it needs to be made by the club members.”

Rosell added that the club’s board of directors would “maintain the club’s assets”.
