MLS Commissioner, Don Garber, to Address Soccerex Global Convention 2015

Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber has confirmed he will be speaking at the Soccerex Global Convention 2015, taking place at the Manchester Central Convention Complex, 7th-9th September.

Having been in the role since 1999, Commissioner Garber brought about a change in fortune for the league, ushering it out of a threatening period of financial underperformance and into one of stability and growth.

Under Garber’s guidance, the league has expanded to 23 teams across America and Canada, and is well on the way to achieving its goal of 24 teams by 2020, with new franchises awarded to Atlanta and Minnesota.

At the Global Convention, Garber will discuss MLS’ journey from its launch as a 10-club league in 1996 to one of the fastest developing leagues, attracting global stars such as Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, David Villa and Kaka.

Garber will also provide insight on the league’s international sponsorship and broadcasting deals, including a new multi-million dollar deal with Sky.

With MLS leading the way in respect to fan engagement, Garber will highlight the importance of digital media as a vehicle for connecting with soccer fans globally and the commercial benefits of being at the forefront of enhancing match day experience.

Garber’s involvement is particularly relevant, as 2015 is special for both organisations with Soccerex entering its 20th year and MLS celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Soccerex CEO Duncan Revie commented: “As we begin the countdown to our 20th anniversary, it is only fitting that Don and MLS are involved in the year they celebrate the same milestone. Both our organisations have enjoyed significant growth during this period and I congratulate Don on the fantastic job he and his team have done in creating such a dynamic and forward thinking league.

“Don’s insight into MLS’s expansion plans will prove fascinating; I am delighted he has agreed to part of this year’s event and his involvement is indicative of the top level right’s holders that will be featuring in this year’s programme.”

The Global Convention will consist of a thought provoking conference programme packed with business insight, alongside a market-leading international exhibition and extensive networking.  A programme of social events completes the schedule for what is widely acknowledged as the world’s leading football business event.

Sir Craig Reedie Set for WADA Presidency

Sir Craig Reedie is on the verge of becoming the new president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) after his only rival Denis Oswald ruled himself out of the running.

Sir Craig is a current member of the WADA Executive Committee and Foundation Board and he is considered to be the favoured choice of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), discount who nominate candidates.

“We are going to access the situation and make notes on candidates in the near future,” said Jacques Rogge, president of the IOC.

“We will most likely do this at our IOC Executive Board meeting in Moscow in August or at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires in September.

“There is no stringent deadline for this nomination though.

“WADA want to know by October so we will decide it before then.”

WADA are seeking a replacement for Australia’s John Fahey at the 2013 World Conference on Doping in Sport which takes place in Johannesburg in November.

Sir Craig’s sole rival was thought to be Denis Oswald, president of world rowing federation, FISA.

However, Oswald’s decision to run for the head role at the IOC has ruled him out of the WADA presidency.

Sir Craig is the former chairman of the British Olympic Association (BOA) and is a vice-president of IOC.

He is also leading the IOC’s Evaluation Commission, running the rule over Istanbul’s, Madrid’s and Tokyo’s bids to host the 2020 Olympic Games.

Kingston Press Championships Clubs Decide On Play-Off Format

The clubs competing in the Kingstone Press Championship have decided to stick with a play-off system involving the top eight clubs at the end of the season to decide the 2013 title.

The rugby league clubs met at Leigh Sports Village and settled on a system that will see the team that finished first taking on the team that finished fourth and the second and third place teams will also meet in the Qualifying play-offs. The Elimination play-offs will see the teams in fifth and eighth teams and the teams in sixth and seventh meeting. The winners will then head to the semi-finals.

The play-offs start on 5 September and will climax with the Grand Final on 29 September.

Rugby Football League Chief Operating Officer Ralph Rimmer said: “The Kingstone Press Championships clubs had a full debate on all aspects of their competitions and calendar.

“It was a very productive day which considered many issues, including that of the introduction of a ‘ClubCall’ system to the Championship play-offs.

“Ultimately, whilst the consensus was that ‘ClubCall’ has worked well in Super League, the clubs were keen for the newly-expanded Championships to continue to forge its own feel and sense of identity.

“This was a theme which resonated throughout the day . The clubs developed several ideas which really demonstrated their sense of pride in their competitions and season: 2013 will benefit from plenty of innovation as a result.”

The clubs also ratified the play-off formula for the Kingstone Press Championship One, which will feature the teams finishing from second to sixth. The team that finishes first receives automatic promotion as champions.

MLB and FOX Agree to Three-Year In-Market Steaming Deal

Major League Baseball (MLB) has agreed a three year deal with American television network FOX to stream live MLB games in-market.

The deal involves 15 teams who currently have broadcast deals with FOX’s regional sports networks.

The teams include; Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays.

Fans will be able to have access to in-market streaming of games on phones, tablets and other devices.

However, those wanting to access this will have to subscribe to local FOX broadcasts of their particular team. Teams were previously not allowed to stream their individual games in their local market.

The decision was announced at the MLB’s quarterly owners meeting in Dallas.

Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said: “I think this is a huge step forward for the industry.

“I think the media landscape is changing very, very rapidly. I think it’s important for us to make sure that our content is available on as many platforms as possible in ways that fans may want to enjoy our games.”

Manfred says talks are already underway with the other 15 teams in MLB in the hope that all teams will be able to offer in-market streaming by next year.

“We have begun and will continue conversations with the rights holders for the other 15 clubs in the hopes that the in-market streaming program will be comprehensive in the 2016 season,” Manfred added.
