SportAccord Convention Welcomes Host City Residents to its Unique Village and Sports Demo Zone for the First Time

In just under a week, medicine the SportAccord Convention World Sport & Business Summit will take place in Sochi, Russia, from 19-24 April 2015.

With history in the making, this is the first time the SportAccord Convention has hosted a unique Village, as well as Sports Demo Zone.

Opening daily from 09:00 to 18:30, SportAccord Convention together with a team of local Volunteers, will welcome the residents of Sochi – a city now recognised as a familiar sports hub, business and tourist destination.

Lia Luzzi, Event Executive, and responsible for the SportAccord Convention Village and Sports Demo Zone commented, “The Sports Demo Zone has worked very well in the past, however, this was for our delegates.

Masterclasses have been scheduled daily and participation is on a first-come, first-served basis. Sports disciplines on show include Judo, Wrestling, Sambo, Muay Thai, Karate, Aikido, Orienteering, Floorball, Boules and Chess, as well as GO games for those who want to sit and play whilst learning!

Mini-Golf, Table Tennis and billiard tables will also be located around the SportAccord Convention Village for people’s enjoyment, enabling sports enthusiasts to have a game, or anyone wanting to try their hand at an unfamiliar sport, to join in and have fun.

Sergey Bubka Promises Review of Athletics if He Wins IAAF Presidency

Taking a lead from president Thomas Bach and his Agenda 2020 review, International Olympic Committee member Sergey Bubka has promised a review of athletics if he is elected president of the International Association of Athletics Federations later this year.

Entitled Vision 2025, Bubka promised this week that his proposal would try and get the athletics world to work together “to build a stronger sport for the future”.

The Ukrainian, who announced his intention to stand in January, goes up against fellow IAAF vice-president Seb Coe in the race to succeed Lamine Diack as president at the federations Beijing congress in August.

“‘Vision 2025’ will be the most thorough review ever taken into every aspect of Athletics worldwide and will be based on collaboration with the Athletics Family from the very beginning,” Bubka said in a statement.

“Its aim will be to identify and examine every significant element of our sport and determine how it can be improved to ensure we are in the best possible shape for the future.”.

In a similar vein to Agenda 2020, Bubka’s Vision 2025 will see a number of working groups formed to cover a wide array of issues involving leaders and experts from athletics and other sport, along with national federations.
The findings of the working groups will then be reviewed at an IAAF congress alongside what Bubka’s camp promised to be a “revamped World Athletics Gala”.
The new version of the event will apparently include a celebration of athletics for every member nation and provide recognition for smaller member federations.
Bubka’s latest announcement comes as he begins to increase the profile of his bid to become president, having had a shorter period in which to campaign than his rival Coe who announced his intention to stand last November.{jcomments on}

Tony Fernandes Sells Caterham F1

Tony Fernandes has sold his Caterham Formula One team to a consortium of Swiss and Middle East investors, bringing an end to a troubled project.

The Malaysian businessman, who also owns newly promoted Premier League club QPR, has spent over £250m on the organisation in four and a half years.

Despite this, Caterham has not had a point to their name in that time spent on the Formula One grid.

The team will continue to race as Caterham F1 Team and will stay at their base in Leafield for the time being.

Colin Kolles, who had previously worked with Midland, Spyker, Force India and HRT, will advise the team, whilst former Dutch Formula One driver Christijan Albers will take over the day-today running of the team.

Albers said: “We are aware of the huge challenge ahead of us given the fight at the bottom end of the championship. Our target now is to aim for 10th place in the 2014 championship.

“We are very committed to the future of the team and we will ensure it has the necessary resources to develop, grow and achieve everything it is capable of.”

Speculation of the takeover had increased last week when Fernandes tweeted: “F1 hasn’t worked, but love Caterham Cars,” before closing his account.

He will now focus his attention on securing QPR’s Premier League survival after a torrid first season in charge.

QPR were relegated from the Premier League despite Fernandes providing a large transfer kitty to managers and placing new recruits on large contracts.

They were promoted from the Championship by beating Derby in the playoff final at Wembley in May.

Miami Dolphins Begin Stadium Renovation

The NFL’s Miami Dolphins have commenced work on the modernisation of Sun Life Stadium, site which they hope to be complete by the 2016 season.

The project will see new seats, treat a shade canopy, anesthetist new video boards, and concourse and concession improvements made to the stadium.

Tom Garfinkel, President & Chief Executive Officer of the Miami Dolphins and Sun Life Stadium said: “Today is an exciting day for the Miami Dolphins and South Florida as we mark the beginning of our comprehensive stadium modernization project.

“Once complete, the stadium will serve as a global destination that will bring a diverse set of world-class events and significant economic benefits to Miami-Dade County.”

The multi-year construction project officially began after a successful vote before the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners last Tuesday.

Upon completion, it is hoped that Sun Life Stadium will be able to attract “world-class events to South Florida for the next 25 years.”

Manchester Giants Net Oldham College Partnership

Manchester Giants of the British Basketball League (BBL) have formed a new partnership with Oldham College which will see a basketball academy set up for students.

The new partnership will allow students to benefit from top-level coaching, as well as opening the door for them to gather insight into the club and ‘professional progression routes.’

Oldham College’s Principal and Chief Executive Alun Francis said: “The partnership with Manchester Giants in setting up the basketball academy is great news for Oldham.

“Working with employers and proposed partners, means that our students get the opportunity to understand the industry as a whole and it also helps by benefiting the community.”

The first phase of the partnership will start in September, with students given the chance to gain work experience at the Giants, as well as coaching and visits to games.

The academy will open in September 2015 and be aimed at 16-19 year olds.

Manchester Giants director Graham Herstell said: “The academy will give the students a platform to make the most of their basketball talents and provides a great opportunity for them to fulfil their potential and to become the best they can be.

“We believe that the Giants and the College together can set in place a valuable stage on the pathway for great things for aspiring young players.”

D.C. United Reveal Six-Match Ticketing Plan

Major League Soccer (MLS) club D.C. United will offer fans a Six-Game Pack allowing them to select six matches of the team’s remaining games in 2013 starting from $144.

The aim is to increase attendances across the season, health which currently stands at an average of 19, shop 467, symptoms in the RFK Stadium.

Although the number is well below the 45,423 capacity, the numbers are up from last year’s 13,846.
