Sahara Group to Sign Sponsorship Deal with Hockey India

Their association with cricket might have crumbled but Sahara Group is set to continue its long-term sponsorship deal with Indian hockey by signing a five-year agreement with Hockey India.

Under the agreement, clinic expected to be signed in the next few days, the country’s men’s and women’s hockey teams at both the senior and junior levels will get financial backing from the corporate giant till 2017.

“More or less everything has been finalised. Most probably tomorrow, the agreement would be signed. We are hoping for a deal worth between Rs 15 ($3.05 million)) to 17 crore ($3.5 million) because we need more money to promote the sport,” a Hockey India official told PTI on condition of anonymity.

When contacted, a top official of Sahara said the company is keen to continue its association with hockey and the picture will become clear within the next two to three days.

“Nothing has been finalised as yet. Talks are on with Hockey India and within next 2-3 days we are expecting to take a decision,” Sahara India’s corporate communications head, Abhijit Sarkar told PTI.

“Our sponsorship deal with Indian hockey ended last month after and Hockey India has approached us to renew the contract,” he added.

If a deal is worked out, the Indian team will sport the Sahara logo on their jerseys during the Olympic qualifiers to be held here from 18 to 26 February.

Indian hockey’s six-month extended sponsorship deal with Sahara ended last month before the five-match Test series against South Africa (for men) and four-Test rubber against Azerbaijan (for women), following which HI approached the company for another extension on a pro-rata basis.

The Sahara Group had first signed a sponsorship deal with the then Indian Hockey Federation in July 2003 for eight years.

The development comes as a major boost for the Indian team in this Olympic year.

The men’s team will face Canada, Singapore, France, Italy and Poland, while the women’s team will square off against South Africa, Poland, Canada, Ukraine and Italy in the Olympic qualifiers.

Earlier, in a sudden development Sahara, sponsor of the Indian Cricket team for over 11 years, decided to part ways with the BCCI last week.

The company had announced that the money saved would be used for the development of other sports and welfare work.

Ladbrokes Extend Sponsorship of Horse-racing’s St Leger Festival

Bookmakers Ladbrokes have renewed their sponsorship of the St Leger Festival and its title race for a further three years.

The deal will see the relationship between Doncaster Racecourse, medic owners Arena Leisure and Ladbrokes reach a decade.

Ladbrokes have also made an additional contribution to the prize fund, ampoule raising the value of this year’s St Leger to a record £550,000.

The four-day Ladbrokes St Leger Festival will kick off again with the Welcome to Yorkshire Day featuring the Leger Legends Race on Wednesday.

Thursday is the ever-popular Ladies Day and Friday features the Stobart Doncaster Cup.

The climax of the week comes on Saturday featuring the Ladbrokes St Leger.

Super Bowl Winner Victor Cruz Inks Deal with IMG

IMG Worldwide, the global sports, fashion and media company, announced today that it has signed NY Giants superstar wide receiver Victor Cruz for marketing and endorsements.

Partick Thistle Gets Law Firm to Become New Shirt Sponsor

Scottish First Division soccer team Partick Thistle has secured Just Employment Law (JEL) as its new shirt sponsor until the end of the season.

The company, who specialise in legal services such as employment tribunals, trade union negotiations and business restructuring, said it was delighted to support its local team and will consider a further deal for next season.

Thistle Chairman David Beattie said: “Thistle have had a couple of financial blows in the past few months so we are delighted today to give the fans positive news as we announce our new front of shirt sponsorship deal.

“It didn’t take long to thrash out the details with the JEL team as they were very keen to come on board and be part of Thistle. JEL will be a very hands on sponsor and we look forward to building a firm relationship with them.”

The deal between the club and the law company is until the end of this season and is worth a five-figure sum. The sponsorship agreement comes after Sangs, the parent company of previous backer macb, went into administration in January.

Later that month, the club confirmed the three-year deal with the drinks firm, thought to be worth £50,000 a season, had come to an end as a result. It was feared at the time The Jags would be left without a sponsor for the remainder of the season.
