FiXI Extend Naming Rights for WSB’s Crescent Racing

FiXI have extended their sponsorship of World Superbike Championship team, Crescent Racing for a further year.

Currently the sole Suzuki representative in the WSBK paddock, Crescent Racing stepped up to the world championship in 2012 after several seasons competing at domestic level with FIXI, a prominent financial company, originally coming on board as a partner.

However, the company upped its commitment to title backer from round five at Donington Park and has confirmed it will now continue to support the Crescent team to the end of the 2013 season.

The deal means FIXI Crescent Racing will remain a two-bike team next year, where it will continue to compete with Suzuki machinery.

“The commercial world isn’t getting any easier, and therefore we are delighted to have secured FIXI’s continued partnership into 2013,” said Paul Denning, who was this week announced as taking over from Jack Valentine as team manager.

“Our job now is to repay the faith that Richard and his co-directors at FIXI have demonstrated, and to develop the performance level further from the greatly improved base we now have.

“Equally, we need to help FIXI with a range of off-track activities that will assist the awareness and understanding of their business in different markets across the world.

“This is one very important step towards the GSX-R1000 becoming a true contender in WSBK once again, and on behalf of Crescent and Suzuki we thank FIXI for its trust, and look forward to some exciting times in 2013 together.”

Tony Stewart Announces New Bass Pro Shops Partnership

Reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points champion Tony Stewart has agreed a partnersip with Bass Pro Shops for the 2013 season.

The NASCAR sponsorship staple will become the primary sponsor on Stewart’s No. 14 race car beginning next season. Currently the backer of Jamie McMurray’s No. 1 car at Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing, the famous big green bass fish will switch teams for next season and adorn Stewart’s vehicle for 18 races, including the Daytona 500.

The announcement comes three days after Stewart-Haas Racing unveiled another primary sponsor for next season, Quicken Loans, which will move up from associate status and back 18 races on Ryan Newman’s car. After losing both its current primaries — Office Depot and U.S. Army — effective the end of this season, Stewart’s organization has rapidly restocked its sponsorship inventory. Now, Newman’s car is in the best shape it’s ever been from a sponsor perspective, Stewart said, while the reigning champ is down to filling just nine open races on his car.

“They’re partners to us, not sponsors,” Stewart said. “The whole idea is to make it good for both sides. … I think that’s something we’ve been able to convey to potential sponsors, to existing sponsors, and I think that’s why it works. We had misfortune with … losing U.S. Army and Office Depot, but I think our reputation as a company has helped us be able to acquire the inventory back this quick.”

The Bass Pro Shops sponsorship was first announced Thursday night at an event in Springfield, Mo., where the company is headquartered. The connection was a natural for Stewart, who has had a personal services agreement with Bass Pro Shops since 2001. The company has also backed Stewart’s sprint and dirt late model cars, and over time Stewart and Morris have become good friends. An avid outdoorsman, Stewart was honorary chairman of this year’s National Hunting and Fishing Day.

After the U.S. Army announced it will be departing Newman’s car, and when he first got word that Office Depot was thinking about stepping down, Stewart approached Morris to gauge his interest.

“The one thing about Johnny is, he’s very loyal,” Stewart said. “We weren’t trying to steal him away from anybody, but we just threw it out there — if you ever decide to make a change, we had opportunities now that we really hadn’t had in the past to do something,” Stewart said. “When Office Depot made their announcement, it was very clear we had an opportunity on our car as well.”

Morris, whose deal with EGR ends after this season, was sold. “It didn’t take us too long to shake hands,” he said. Bass Pro Shops has a history in NASCAR dating back to its days with Dale Earnhardt and Richard Childress Racing, and Morris said the company would likely continue its association with Ty and Austin Dillon. Bass Pro Shops is primary sponsor on Ty’s Camping World Truck Series entry, and an associate on Austin’s Nationwide car. Morris also didn’t rule out a continued presence on McMurray’s car, given how much his company has benefitted from its presence in NASCAR.

“A lot of NASCAR fans like to hunt and fish,” Morris said. “We came to realize that the first time we sponsored Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s car in the all-star race. It was amazing. In a 30-day period, they sold over $10 million worth of caps, T-shirts and die-cast cars. That spoke obviously to the popularity of Dale Sr., to the popularity of NASCAR and how many of those fans wanted to buy a souvenir that had Bass Pro on it. That said, ‘We like to hunt and finish, and the outdoors, too.'”

Bass Pro Shops has been primary sponsor on McMurray’s car the past two years, and while Morris praised the EGR organization, he said he couldn’t resist the “once-in-a-lifetime chance” to work with Stewart. Now Stewart has nine races left to fill on his car for 2013, and while he could rely on co-owner Gene Haas’ company to plug that deficit, he’d rather find another sponsor to go along with Bass Pro Shops and Mobil 1 — the latter of which will back 11 races on his vehicle next season.

“Haas Automation could fill in if we needed to, but we hope to find someone to fill in those final nine races for us,” Stewart said. “… My goal as his business partner is to not have to fall back on him and utilize his resources that way.”

Dwayne Wade to Join Li-Ning after Leaving Nike

Miami Heat guard, Dwayne Wade has revealed he is going to partner with China-based athletic company Li-Ning following the breakdown of his deal with Nike’s subsidiary Jordan.

A formal announcement of the partnership is expected next week, while Wade’s team, the Miami Heat, is in China to compete in the NBA’s China Games.

Marketing experts are mixed on how the endorsement will play out for Li-Ning. Keith Wan, director of sports and athlete marketing for the Leverage Agency, said signing Wade will give the Chinese company more firepower to compete in the U.S. with brands such as Nike and Adidas.

“This is huge for Li-Ning because it doesn’t have someone like a Lebron James or Michael Jordan who can carry a brand,” he said. “It’s a positive for Wade too because he’ll be able to expand his international appeal to the Chinese market.”

According to research firm The Q Scores Co.’s latest ranking of athlete popularity in the U.S., Wade is recognized by 66 percent of all sports fans between the ages of 12 and 64. The player also ranked 106 out of 621 sports personalities that the company measured.

Q Scores EVP Henry Schafer said Wade could be a valuable asset to Li-Ning, depending on the strategy the brand chooses to promote him here.

“The issue in terms of marketing in the U.S. is if it’s going to be perceived as a compatible fit in the eyes of the consumers,” Schafer said. “Li-Ning is going to have to establish a brand identity that connects Wade positively to the brand.”

With product innovation driving most of the sales in the athletic category, SportsOneSource analyst Matt Powell said he doesn’t foresee Jordan Brand’s loss of Wade as having a significant impact.

“My estimate is that [Wade] signature product sold $15 million to $20 million last year in retail, and for a billion-dollar brand, that’s pretty minor,” Powell said. “Nike basically stepped aside because I don’t think it finds the same value in individual player endorsements.”

“We have enjoyed a fantastic relationship with Singha over the past two years and certainly a highlight for the football club was taking the first team to play a game in Bangkok in 2011 as part of our Here to Play, Here to Stay pre-season tour of the region. The youth team also visited Bangkok this summer playing the Leo All Stars side in front of 7,500 local fans.

“Singha is delighted to be given a chance to extend this fruitful relationship until 2017 and hopefully many more years afterwards. Next year is Singha’s 80th anniversary and we see no better fitting way to celebrate this than continuing with this successful relationship with Chelsea FC.”

Brewed by Boon Rawd Brewery Co, Ltd – the first and largest brewery in Thailand since 1933 – Singha Lager has earned a reputation as one of the finest quality lagers in the world, receiving numerous international awards with a strong global presence in over 50 countries worldwide.

Singha Beer is sold exclusively at Stamford Bridge including stadium kiosks, bars, restaurants and hotels.

This year has seen Chelsea FC launch an official Blue Pitch in Thailand, the third in Asia having already opened facilities in Hong Kong and Malaysia.

The announcement follows recent sponsorship news that Gazprom, Audi, Sauber F1 and Delta Air Lines have all become Chelsea FC global partners. Samsung have also exercised their right to extend their partnership with the club until 2015.

Former Chelsea Head of Marketing, Ben Wells told iSportconnect: “It’s a great deal for CFC (I am assuming an uplift on what was already a very strong commercial deal). Singha are a hugely ambitious brand, seeking to grow in many of the markets Chelsea are targeting.

“They understand sponsorship and are strong and collaborative activation partners. In Thailand Chelsea are seen as being much newer than the more established clubs like MUFC and Liverpool and hence they resonate with the younger demographic Singha is targeting. Additionally the fans at Stamford Bridge love the beer!”
