Sportdigital.tv Acquires German Rights to Euro ’12 Qualifiers

Sportdigital.tv, treatment a German television channel, has secured broadcast rights to two UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying matches involving England and Portugal.

The subscription-based channel, which broadcasts through cable, satellite and the internet, will show the England v Switzerland and Portugal v Norway games on Saturday, June 4.

Sportdigital.tv holds the rights to various international soccer competitions, including Italy’s Serie A, England’s Championship, the Russian Premier League, the Eredivisie and KNVB-Beker in the Netherlands, the Türkiye Kupasi from Turkey, Brazil’s Campeonato Brasileiro and Major League Soccer from the United States.

In other news, Munich-based sports streaming website Livedome has secured Germany’s broadcast rights to the Euro 2012 qualifier between Belgium and Turkey on Friday, June 3.

Arsenal Partner with Foreign Exchange Company

Arsenal FC has signed an agreement with foreign exchange company Markets.com, generic who will become an Official Partner.

Named as Arsenal’s official Forex, physician CFD and Binary Trading Partner, Markets.com will activate the Partnership in a number of territories, with a particular focus on Asia where the Gunners have strong support following recent pre-season tours and sustained digital fan engagement. 

The agreement will afford Markets.com the right to develop cross-promotional and marketing activities, including presence across Arsenal’s extensive digital media channels. In addition, Markets.com will have access to match day hospitality at Emirates Stadium to offer exclusive experiences to their key clients.

UEFA Agree Spanish Mediaset Deal for Euro 2012 & Deals in Asia for CL/Europa

UEFA has agreed terms with Mediaset España for the Spanish broadcast rights to Euro 2012, hosted in Poland and Ukraine, as well as the Malaysian and Myanmar contracts for the Champions and Europa League tournaments, awarded to Astro and S Media respectively

UEFA’s marketing subsidiary UEFA Events SA brokered the deals.

Mediaset España will have the rights to all of the tournament’s 31 matches, which will be broadcast across their Telecinco and Cuatro channels. The package also includes magazine round-up and highlights programmes, along with internet and mobile coverage. Mediaset España will also have the rights to the UEFA European Under-21 Championships in 2011 and 2013.

Guy-Laurent Epstein, the marketing director of UEFA Events SA, said of the Spanish deal: “We are delighted to welcome Mediaset España to the group of exclusive UEFA Euro 2012 media rights partners. We are convinced that Mediaset España, with its extensive experience, will provide Spanish football fans with a unique viewing experience for all three tournaments.”

Meanwhile, in Malaysia, pay-TV broadcaster Astro scored over incumbent ESPN Star Sports as UEFA announced its 2012-15 Champions League and Europa League media rights to various territories in Asia.

Astro has been awarded exclusive media rights for the 2012-15 Champions League and Europa League for Malaysia and Brunei that covers at least six Champions League and at least four Europa League games per matchweek, as well as highlights and delayed match coverage for both competitions each week.

While announcing the shift of the rights to Astro, European football’s governing body made it a point to “thank long-time partner, incumbent UEFA Champions League rights holder ESPN Star Sports for its valued contribution to the competition”.

In addition, S Media has been granted all rights to the 2012-15 Champions League and the Europa League, broadcasting at least six games per matchweek live on its pay-TV channels, as well as highlights and delayed coverage, in respect of both the Champions League and the Europa League.

Commenting on the award of these media rights in Asia, UEFA added: “The media rights sales process is successfully continuing in Asia, reflecting the growing interest for UEFA’s club football competitions in the region. UEFA is happy to announce these deals as they will enable football fans throughout the respective territories to enjoy increased levels of match choice and coverage of both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.”

Intersport has been named the Official Presenting Sponsor of the Vierschanzentournee (Four Hills tournament).

Infront Sports & Media, cheap as the exclusive marketing partner of the Austrian Ski Federation (ÖSV) and the German Ski Federation (DSV) for the ski jumping series, has secured the world’s leading sporting goods retailer for involvement at the highest sponsorship level.

Intersport holds a long tradition and affiliation with ski jumping. The brand was a dedicated partner for over 25 years as Main and Title Sponsor of the “Intersport Springertournee”, which was later renamed Vierschanzentournee in 1995. Almost two decades later, in 2013, the brand resumed involvement with the prestigious event as Main Sponsor – a spring board to 2014 where it now, once again will be closely aligned with the event name.

EPL CEO Lauds ‘Equitable’ B’cast Distribution as Utd Set Records

English Premier League soccer champion Manchester United has become the first club in the country to earn more than £60m (US$97.2m) in one season from broadcast income and prize money.

United earned £60.4m ($97.8m) this season, largely thanks to lucrative new overseas TV deals brokered by the top flight league. Despite earning the lowest amount of any Premier League club, relegated Blackpool still generated £39.1m ($63.3m) in TV and prize money.

Premier League CEO Richard Scudamore stated: “We believe that our income distribution mechanism, the most equitable of Europe’s major football leagues, rewards sporting success while also guaranteeing a significant amount to each club in order that they can plan from one season to the next.

“Many have commented on the competitive nature of this season’s Barclays Premier League. The clubs deserve huge credit for putting on a fantastic competition. We believe the way we distribute broadcast income plays a part in allowing each club to compete at the highest level.”

This season, each club received £13.8m ($22.35m) as the equal share of domestic TV rights and £17.9m ($29m) as the equal share of overseas broadcast rights. On top of that, every place in the Premier League table is worth £756,000 ($1.22m) with title-winner United earning a maximum £15.1m ($24.5m).

Huawei Becomes Official Technology Partner of Washington Redskins

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, has today been named the Official Technology Partner of NFL franchise, Washington Redskins.

The partnership includes Huawei Enterprise providing a Wi-Fi network for the Suite Level at the 85,000-seater FedExField, one of the largest stadiums in the National Football League, and represents the first major sports sponsorship for Huawei in the U.S.

ARD & ZDF Retain Rights to German Soccer Internationals

The rights to the German national soccer side’s international matches have been retained by the nation’s public service broadcasters ARD and ZDF for a further four years.

The new contract will commence in 2012/13 and concludes at the end of the 2015/16 season, worth a combined US$245m and will cover all home qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and international friendlies for Germany’s senior team, as well as all matches played by the German senior women’s national soccer team and selected games from the 3. Liga.

In a twist, Germany’s home qualifying matches to UEFA Euro 2016 in France were not included in this deal – negotiated by ARD and ZDF’s sports rights agency SportA with the Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB) – as for the first time rights to these fixtures will be marketed centrally by UEFA.

Wolfgang Niersbach, general secretary of the DFB, said: “We want to thank all the television channels for expressing an interest in the rights. The public broadcasters offer an excellent platform for Germany internationals plus women’s football and the 3. Liga due to their strong regional structures.”

ZDF director-general Markus Schaechter added: “Viewers can look forward to continuing skilled and high quality broadcasts of DFB matches on free television.”

Goody’s Expands Dale Earnhardt Jr. Sponsorship

Greek fast food chain Goody’s has expanded its partnership with NASCAR’s Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Beginning in 2015, and extending through 2017, Earnhardt will drive the No. 88 Goody’s car in one race each year in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. This marks the first time Earnhardt —who has been a spokesperson for Goody’s for the past two years—will drive a Goody’s-sponsored car.

Goody’s announced the new partnership and unveiled the No. 88 Goody’s car at the Goody’s® Headache Relief Shot® 500 at Martinsville Speedway. During pre-race ceremonies, Earnhardt also premiered a new video and launched the #Fastest88 Trivia Contest. Beginning Oct. 26, 2014, racing fans will have 88 days to enter the contest for a chance to win one of two grand prizes or one of 11 additional prizes.

England Women’s FIFA WC Games Broadcast on BBC

England Women’s national soccer team matches during the upcoming FIFA World Cup in June will be broadcast live on TV and online by the BBC after the broadcaster reached a deal with the FA.

England’s three group matches against Mexico, New Zealand and Japan will be available live in the UK on the BBC website, on BBC Radio 5Live and via the channel’s interactive Red Button television service.

Highlights of these matches will also be available in the evenings of the matchdays and the final will be screened live on BBC Three on July 17.

The BBC has been a long-term broadcaster of women’s soccer, having screened England’s matches at the 2007 World Cup and the FA Women’s Cup final until 2009, when first ITV, and then Sky Sports took over the rights to the tournament.

England’s coach, Hope Powell stated: “I’m absolutely delighted the BBC will be showing our games at the World Cup. They showed all our games in 2007 and that did so much to raise the profile of the England team and of women’s football in general. The team the BBC sent out to China were very professional and I thought they did an excellent job. I know they will do just as good a job this time around. We are thrilled to have them on board.”
