London Wasps Announce New Principal Shareholder

Irish businessman Derek Richardson has today become the principal shareholder of London Wasps and a new board of directors will be announced by the Club in the coming weeks.

Richardson is well-known in the insurance market, having founded and sold Ireland’s first online insurance broker 123.ie.

He will not have a day-to-day role at the Club but he has identified a number of key priorities for the business, including continuing to build the London Wasps’ supporter base, developing new training and administrative facilities, attracting significant sponsorship investment for the business, and, in the longer term, seeking to move to a new ground, which will be vital in establishing the long-term financial sustainability of the Club.

London Wasps CEO Nick Eastwood said: “It is fantastic news for everyone involved with London Wasps that today we can put a full stop to the uncertainty that has hung over the Club in recent years.

“While we have managed to make some progress this season financially, Derek’s involvement from here on in means that our business is now in very safe financial hands.

“He has an excellent track record in developing successful businesses and he sees a real opportunity to take this Club forward through sound investment and a smart commercial strategy.

“A key piece of the jigsaw in ensuring that London Wasps becomes a sustainable business will of course be owning or co-owning our own stadium, although that is much further down the line.”

Richardson himself commented: “I am excited to have become involved with London Wasps, a Club I believe has a fantastic opportunity to move forward on and off the pitch. I see my involvement as a big responsibility and this is a long-term challenge which I want to meet head-on.

“The Club has been through some tough times but I am confident that, with the right management and commercial focus, new investment can really reinvigorate everything about London Wasps.

“Financial stability is our immediate focus and our aim is to become a self-sustainable business within a number of years. We are now looking at developing a longer term business strategy with the ultimate aim of ensuring we achieve that goal.

“On the pitch I am also very enthused about where we are headed. In Dai Young I believe we have a world-leading Director of Rugby and the progress being made by the squad is exciting for everyone involved.”

Rio 2016 Preparations are ‘worst’ Ever says Concerned IOC Vice President

Preparations for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games are the ‘worst’ ever seen according to International Olympic Committee (IOC) Vice-President John Coates.

Brazil has come under increased scrutiny for the slow progress in preparing for both Rio 2016 and the FIFA 2014 World Cup which kicks off in just under 45 days.

Australian Coates (pictured) said the situation was ‘critical’ and that there was no ‘Plan B.’

“The situation is critical on the ground,” said Coates. “The IOC has adopted a more hands-on role. It is unprecedented for the IOC but there is no Plan B. We are going to Rio.”

Coates added: “It’s the worst that I’ve experienced. We have become very concerned. They are not ready in many, many ways.

“We have to make it happen and that is the IOC approach. You can’t walk away from this.”

Venues across Rio have been hampered by delays, with some sports concerned they will not even be able to host a test event.

Coates confirmed that construction on some venues had not even started, whilst others are significantly delayed.

Worse than Athens 2004

He also added that the situation was worse than for the 2004 Games in Athens where similar concerns were raised, although the organising committee did produce the venues and infrastructure on time.

Coates, who was involved in the organising committee for Sydney 2000 also said that a lack of communication from Brazil was proving to be frustrating for the IOC.

“No-one is able to give answers at the moment,” he said.

“Can they use the car parks in the village for recovery centres? What will be the time to take from this venue to this venue?

“All of those things, they’re being fobbed off.”

He added that despite Rio 2016 having the same number of staff as London 2012 did at the same stage, the people in Brazil did not have the same experience as in London.

PSG Confirm Parc des Princes Revamp

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will begin redevelopment work on the Parc des Princes stadium after the last game of the season at a cost of €75m ($98m).

The stadium currently holds just under 49,000 and the redevelopment would see the capacity rise to 60,000, as the club look to expand on their growing stature following the takeover of the Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) group in 2011.

Major redevelopments, a new stadium on the same site or a move to a new facility have been suggested in the past and now the rejuvenation option has been taken up.

Jean-Claude Blanc, PSG’s managing director told Le Parisien: “It’s about improving the quality of a good number of areas of the stadium with an emphasis on design and aesthetics.

“We’ll play at the Parc throughout the work. We won’t close any of the stands and no games will be played elsewhere.”

Two extra rows of seats are set to bring the fans closer to the pitch, a panoramic viewing area to encourage families to attend and an increase in VIP seats from 2000 to 4500.

Blanc, who worked on the development of Juventus Stadium, also confirmed that the dressing rooms at the Parc des Princes would be increased.

“You have to compare it with the best in Europe,” said Blanc. “Right now, the surface area of the Parc des Princes dressing rooms is about a third of that of Juventus. Teams move about with more and more equipment, there are more backroom staff and they need more space for medical care. We’re going to optimise every existing square metre.”

NBA jersey deal ‘radical for American sports’

The NBA will begin putting sponsorship logos on player uniforms in 2017-18, a move that could generate at least $100 million annually and a step that the NFL, Major League Baseball and NHL have yet to take.

The three-year trial was approved Friday by NBA owners and will take effect when the league’s contract with Nike begins.

Sports marketing expert Nigel Currie writing in our ‘Community” page believes this could see a domino effect in the US.

He said: “This is a radical change for the major sports in the US but it signifies an ever increasing desire for major franchises to become more financially independent.”

“The ability to negotiate individual agreements is very attractive as it gives the franchises the chance to break away from the uniformity of the current structure which depends primarily on the dividing up of TV and other media rights fees among the teams.”

“It is another sign that the power and worth of the overall rights held by major sports clubs and franchises worldwide have been greatly undervalued and under exploited.”

“Of course there will be potential clashes between broadcast and media sponsors as well as clashes with agreements held by individual players, but many other major sports leagues around the world have addressed this problem and found workable solutions.”

Earlier in the week NBA commissioner Adam Silver explained why they had come to the decision.

He said: “Jersey sponsorships provide deeper engagement with partners looking to build a unique association with our teams and the additional investment will help grow the game in exciting new ways,”

“We’re always thinking about innovative ways the NBA can remain competitive in a global marketplace, and we are excited to see the results of this three-year trial.”
