VisitScotland Look for Glasgow 2014 to Act as a ‘springboard’ for Country’s Tourism Industry

VisitScotland are hoping that the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will act as a “springboard” for the country’s tourism industry.

Up to 1.5 million visitors are expected to go to Glasgow later this month as a part of the Commonwealth Games.

Tourism agency, VisitScotland, has been working with local businesses to try and make the most of the opportunity.

The agency announced plans for a £2.5m marketing drive last year, to promote the Games around the world, which they hoped would encourage more visitors to Scotland.

VisitScotland CEO Malcolm Roughead said: “2014 presents a unique opportunity for Scottish tourism – not only as a chance to promote our country to a global audience, but also to leave a legacy for the industry, developing skills that will pave the way for a Scotland that is more accessible, more sustainable and even more welcoming.

“It is important that visitors coming to Scotland this year, leave impressed not just by our scenery, wildlife and landmarks but by our people and our facilities.

“This helps raise our standing on the international stage and makes Scotland a place of interest for visitors and for other businesses.”

Roughead added: “Improving skills and standards helps attract more visitors, which in turn creates more jobs and boosts the economy. For every £50,000 spent by visitors, one new job is created.

“Tourism is one of the country’s most important industries and worth £11bn to the Scottish economy, but there is the potential for further growth.

“We must use major events such as the Commonwealth Games as a significant springboard for our future.”

Essex Cricket Club Launch Bid For Olympic Stadium

Essex County Cricket Club has confirmed that they have entered the race to secure the tenancy of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium once the Games has concluded.

Essex, pills which currently plays in the second tier of English cricket, sale | has joined forces with the University of East London to launch the bid. The news comes after the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) last month announced it had received four offers for the Olympic Stadium.

Essex said in a statement: “We can confirm that the University of East London and Essex County Cricket Club have jointly put in a bid to the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) to utilise space in the Olympic Stadium. We cannot provide any further detail at this stage, cialis as we are bound by a legal confidentiality agreement. We see this as a fantastic opportunity (and) are committed to supporting the achievement of the best possible outcomes from the legacy operation of the Olympic Stadium.”

The four bidders mark a significant reduction from the 16 parties that had initially expressed interest when the tender process was announced; with English Championship football club West Ham United last month coming forward as the first party to have confirmed it had lodged a bid. West Ham’s bid came after it was seemingly set to secure use of the Olympic Stadium post-London 2012, only to see its deal with Newham Council collapse in October.

Following London 2012, the Olympic Stadium will be downsized from an 80,000 capacity to 60,000 at a reported cost of £35 million. The running track will be retained as a key part of the venue’s legacy plan, with London set to stage the 2017 World Athletics Championships. A decision on the successful bidder is expected in May, ahead of the opening of the Games on July 27.

Putin Approves New Law for Sochi 2014 Venues and Land Swap

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a new law that will allow private companies to swap facilities built for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi for government land.

The law, order which came into effect on Monday, means that all privately-owned Olympic facilities and the ones under the Olimpstroi Corporation, will be eligible for the swap.

Olimpstroi, founded in 2007 and set to be dissolved at the end of the year, was created to build venues such as the Fisht Olympic Stadium and the Bolshoi Ice Dome.

It is believed that Russian Railways could benefit the most from the new law, with reports saying that many of the railroads in and around Sochi would qualify.

The government would have to purchase railroad sites from Mechel, a company with severe debt, with value of the railroad coming from its closeness to the Elga Coal Deposit – one of the biggest in the world.

F1 track to be complete in August

In other news, the Formula One track in Sochi is set to be complete by August 10.

The country’s Deputy Prime Minister, Dmitry Kozak said: “The construction works are going according to schedule, and by August 10, the construction and installation work at the site should be completed.

“For a long time, since the Soviet Union, there has been a dream of having a Formula One race in our country. Here, if it had not been for the Olympic Games, we would not have had a chance to have the race.”
