Australian MotoGP Falls Flat with Record Low Crowds

A record small crowd attended the Australian MotoGP at Philip Island on the weekend, with only 31,500 people watching the race on Sunday.

That figure is the lowest race-day attendance since the Victorian circuit regularly began hosting the event in 1997.

Over the three days, 77,200 people attended, which was slightly better than the lowest ever figure in 2001, when 75,870 people attended over three days.

The absence of Australian Casey Stoner is being blamed for the sparse crowds, but organisers did say they had hoped the excitement of a new winner would attract larger crowd numbers.

However, Australian Grand Prix Corporation chief executive Andrew Westacott said he was happy with the numbers.

“Attendance was in line with what we had anticipated. We were expecting between 70-80,000 so we are happy with the result,” he said.

“International television viewership was strong, especially given the very competitive nature of the championship.

“This only furthers Victoria’s reputation for staging major events of international repute.”

Marussia Form Engine Partnership with Ferrari

Formula 1 team Marussia have announced a new technical partnership with Ferrari that will see the team’s cars powered by the Italian firm’s engines from 2014.

Marussia will be supplied with the Scuderia’s new 1.6-litre, allergist V6 engine, allergy as well as their Energy Recovery System, health full transmission and other ancillary systems.

The deal comes as no surprise, with Marussia’s previous supplier Cosworth leaving the sport.

Andy Webb, Marussia CEO said: “The importance of this development to our team cannot be overstated.

“Not only will we benefit from a customer supply from the most successful engine manufacturer in Formula One’s history, but this also provides further confirmation, if it were needed, of our commitment to the sport and determination to maintain our progression towards our long-term ambitions.”

Marussia have had a partnership with Cosworth since their debut season in 2010, but with 2013 being their last season in F1, there is likely to be three Ferrari-powered teams from next year.

Webb went on to thank Cosworth for their support during an ‘important part of our team’s journey.’

Chung Mong-joon Launches Campaign to Become FIFA president

By Christian Radnedge

Honorary FIFA vice president Chung Mong-joon has pledged that he can reform world football’s governing body in just one term, if he is elected president after announcing his candidacy this week.

The 61-year-old launched his campaign in Paris on Monday in the same nation as the other heavyweight in the running; UEFA president Michel Platini.

Chung has previously stated his desire to be part of fresh approach in FIFA, campaign launch, after the scandal-hit years under Sepp Blatter.

Today he promised: “I can fix FIFA’s problems in four years.

“It’s time to restore common sense at FIFA. The real reason it is so corrupt is that the same person has been in charge for 40 years. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Chung has been out of executive office since being ousted as Asia’s FIFA vice-president by Jordan’s Prince Ali bin Al Hussein in 2011.

Platini, a FIFA vice-president since 2007, was criticised by Chung as part of the problem, not the solution.

Chung said: “Platini is my good friend, but he does nothing to appreciate the seriousness of the current FIFA crisis.”

Directors’ Club Makes Impressive Return to Dubai

The iSportconnect Directors’ Club made another very successful return to Dubai today as the event continues its growth in the Middle East region.

In partnership with Professional Sports Group, the third edition of the event in Dubai was staged at Falcon and Associates.

The panel was made up of Tom Hill, Global Head of Sponsorship Sales at Manchester United, Mohammad Al Alawi, Associate Director of Marketing at Falcon and Associates, Campbell Jamieson, General Manager at ICC and Andrew Phillips, Director of Marketing and Customer Experience at Daman Health Insurance.

The panel openly discussed the topic “Home & Away Sports Marketing” and looked at how Dubai and the Emirates have been at the fore of being a second home for sport.

Each panel member also focused on specific topics relating to their own respective organisations, with Tom Hill touching on the development of global sponsorship strategy and the importance of identifying territory/regional sponsors and the development of global Manchester offices and dedicated teams researching territories, brands, rights holders and trends.

Campbell Jamieson gave an insight into furthering the development of cricket in the region in line with popularity of the sport and sponsorship strategies to suit partners objectives

Mohammad Al Alawi discussed the decisions behind the sponsorship of Chinese Table Association as a nation ‘Dubai’ as opposed to a brand and using the sponsorship at ‘home’ to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle through initiatives e.g. Ping-Pong Dubai.

DCDubai2015_2

Andrew Phillips gave his take on inspiring an affluent community to become fit and healthy through role models/key sporting events in UAE.

The event proved very interactive with interesting questions for the panel coming from the floor from delegates such as, ‘how has the emergence of many social media channels and broadcast platforms effected your industries?’ ‘Has there so far been a negative effect of the FIFA Allegations and your existing partners?’ and ‘What is the best practice for industry knowledge sharing?’

The audience was made up of a group of leaders from both local community and international brands rights holders which made for engaging conversations, that led to new ideas being discussed and how to move forwards with this.

The iSportconnect Directors’ Club once again proved that it is important as a networking platform to further ideas and encourage future discussions in the region.

The Directors’ Club will be returning to Dubai, along with Abu Dhabi, later this year.

Baseball and Softball Apply For Inclusion in Tokyo 2020 Olympics

By Christian Radnedge

Baseball and softball have officially applied to be included in the programme for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The news was confirmed by World Baseball Softball Confederation president Riccardo Fraccari. He said this week: “It is an honour for the World Baseball Softball Confederation to submit the application.

“I would like to thank… IOC president Thomas Bach for his Olympic Agenda 2020 vision, cough which has created this exciting new process for new sports-events, ed like baseball and softball, to be considered for the world’s biggest sports stage.”

A Tokyo 2020 additional event programme panel will evaluate the proposals from IOC-recognised non-Olympic international sports federations with the organising committee announcing a shortlist on June 22.

Baseball/softball had applied for inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 Games before but lost out to wrestling which was initially voted out but reinstated in the programme in 2013.

But the sports have been considered favourites to feature in the Games for the first time since 2008 since the back-door entry route was endorsed within the IOC’s Agenda 2020 project last December.

Off the back of a record revenue season in the MLB – highlighted on iSportconnectTV – WBSC is hoping to capitalise on the strong following of baseball/softball in Japan where the sports have strong following.

WBSC estimates baseball and softball as being played by 65m people in more than over 140 countries and attracting 150m fans annually to stadiums worldwide.

Fraccari said: “Baseball and softball at the Tokyo 2020 Games can help spread Olympic values with the entire nation of Japan and those around the world – and give inspiration to be at the Olympic Games and to be an Olympian — providing another key pathway for TOCOG and the Olympic Movement to connect directly with millions of people worldwide, particularly younger generations, women and our sport’s loyal fans.”
