1080 secure double awards for Clipper coverage

1080 Media TV has won two categories in the TMT Media Awards – ‘Best Documentary Series-UK’ for their seven part series called ‘The Race of Their Lives’ which is based on the 2015-16 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, and also ‘Most Innovative Online Broadcast Company-UK’.

1080 Media Founder and CEO Cliff Webb said of the awards, ”This is the second Clipper Race we have covered, and after the success of the first series of ‘The Race of Their Lives’ in 2013-14, we felt we could take the formula developed then and make further improvements on the coverage for the second series, which appears to have been proven in winning this award. The series is about the people taking part and their experiences as they race for 11 months around the planet on these 70-foot Clipper Race yachts.

“We chose key characters for each episode, and followed these amateur sailors, many of whom had never sailed before, as their epic adventure unfolded through this 40,000 mile circumnavigation. We began by following the crew training ahead of the race itself, and embedded one producer/camera operator who underwent the same training. Richard Edwards was also a novice sailor, but followed a different crew through each of the 14 races involved around the world, documenting the storms, the heat, and the emotions the crew experienced. We supplemented his coverage at each race stop-over and had extra cameras cover specific aspects such as the iconic Sydney-Hobart race.”

“We work together with major international networks, so the series has been broadcast in over 100 countries and on airlines thus far. It is therefore naturally very rewarding to have the hard work and effort that has gone into this series recognised with this accolade.”

On behalf of the Clipper Race, Global Business and Communications Director Jonathan Levy commented, ”This is a very challenging production requiring news and long form programming to be produced in a very hostile environment, which is a testing of both people and equipment. The TV series perfectly captures the human story of ordinary people taking on a remarkable journey set within a highly competitive race. 1080 Media TV have turned around content in a fast and compelling way together with global distribution to major international broadcasters. We are very pleased that they have turned this into an award winning series”.

FIFA Confirm February Election Date; Platini Candidacy in Doubt

The FIFA Executive Committee has confirmed the FIFA presidential election will still go ahead on 26 February.

The decision was taken at the FIFA ExCo extraordinary session in Zurich on Tuesday.

The governing body has also thrown UEFA president Michel Platini’s candidacy to become the next president of FIFA in serious doubt.

Domenico Scala, chairman of the FIFA Ad-hoc Electoral Committee stated that “candidacies for the FIFA Presidency that are submitted in due time and form, but which relate to candidates who are subject to a (provisional or definite) ban from taking part in any football-related activity, will not be processed by the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee as long as such ban is valid and in force”.

However, if the Frenchman’s ban is lifted before the election takes place he may still be able to run.

Scala added he “would decide, depending on the respective exact point in time, on how to proceed with the candidacy concerned”.

“I was pleased to see unity among the Executive Committee members during our discussions of reform and its critical importance to our organisation and world football. Increasing the transparency of ethics investigations is just one example of our firm commitment to change,” said Acting FIFA President Issa Hayatou.

“It was also significant that we set the course for the upcoming presidential election.”

Reform Committee

The 2016 FIFA reform committee has recommended a number of changes “to effect lasting change on the organization and to restore FIFA’s reputation”.

This includes 12-year term limits for FIFA presidents, an age limit of 74 and a “disclosure of individual compensation on an annual basis of the FIFA President, all FIFA Council members, the General Secretary and all chairman of independent standing and judicial committees”.

The reform committee has also suggested that the FIFA Executive Committe should be renamed as the “FIFA Council” to “reflect its more appropriate function”.

They state that the Executive Committee “should oversee strategic matters and have a supervisory role over standing committees and FIFA administration. It should not have 2 executive powers over policies of FIFA”.

In other decisions taken by the Executive Committee today, Ángel María Villar Llona has been appointed as acting chairman of the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup and Acting President Issa Hayatou has assumed the position of acting chairman of the FIFA Emergency Committee.

FC Sion Owner Steps up Bid For 2026 Winter Olympics

Christian Constantin, capsule owner and president of Swiss football club FC Sion, has stepped up his bid to launch a tilt at the 2026 winter Olympic Games by submitting a dossier to the cantonal government of Valais.

Constantin’s efforts were first revealed in December and Jean-Michel Cina, head of the Valais Department of Economic Affairs, told the SDA news agency that the proposal will be studied by the cantonal government.

Sion is the capital of Valais and has plenty of history with winter Olympic bids. For the 1976 Games, Sion was beaten by Denver, only for the US city to then give up the hosting rights.

The Games were eventually awarded to Innsbruck, Austria.

In the infamous Salt Lake City scandal bidding process for the 2002 Games, Sion finished joint-second with Sweden’s Östersund.

Then, for the 2006 winter Olympics, Sion was considered the favourite for the hosting rights before Torino won in the final vote.

Constantin’s proposal is still in its infancy and envisages an Olympic Games that would also spread outside Valais to the likes of Lausanne, Kandersteg and St. Moritz.

Lausanne was in July awarded the hosting rights to the 2020 winter Youth Olympic Games, while the winter Olympics itself was last hosted in Switzerland by St. Moritz in 1948.

Tune into iSportconnect TV for more reaction and analysis to the day’s big story.

8.20pm Speaking to iSportconnect, Keir Radnedge said: “One of the points of difference between Coe and Bubka was that, whereas Sergey Bubka had a lot of very cogent proposals for development, grassroots and so on, he was a little bit weak on the idea of actually where the money would come from to pay for all these good ideas.

“Whereas Coe has come up with proposals for extra finance that would go to the federations and the grassroots, which is obviously important.”

8.00pm Speaking to iSportconnect, Michael Pirrie said: “Seb Coe wants to make the sport as relevant as possible for the young generation. He wants the young people to go to the athletics events the same way they turn up to football and to many other exciting sporting events that young people go to and that means change to the format of the sports events in athletics.”

7.45pm We will soon have reaction to Seb Coe being named as IAAF president from our Olympic & World Sports editor Michael Pirrie and world sports journalist Keir Radnedge.
