Lance Armstrong Hopes for Dope-Free Future in Cycling Amid Latest Doping Report

Cycling has not turned a corner and is still grappling with the scourge of doping, according to a report by the Cycling Independent Reform Commission (CIRC).

Also, former UCI presidents Hein Verbruggen and Pat McQuaid were criticised for overseeing a doping culture that evolved in the 1990s and 2000s in the document published on Sunday.

It was particularly scathing on cycling’s governing body for how they handled the allegations surrounding Lance Armstrong – who was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and given a lifetime ban from cycling in 2012, before eventually admitting to systematic doping in January 2013 having been dropped by his sponsors.

“UCI exempted Lance Armstrong from rules, failed to target test him despite the suspicions, and publicly supported him against allegations of doping, even as late as 2012,” the report said.

In a statement the American said; “I am deeply sorry for many things I have done. However, it is my hope that revealing the truth will lead to a bright, dope-free future for the sport I love,” he said in a statement.

The CIRC was commissioned to do the report by current UCI president Brian Cookson and was written over a 13 month period, interviewing 174 people – former and current riders, doctors and many others involved in the sport.

One former rider alleged in the 227-page document that 90 per cent of today’s peloton were still doping.

“It is commonly held that it is much easier today to compete as a clean athlete competitively,” the report concludes.

“Whether this change amounts to a ‘change in doping culture’ as submitted frequently seems questionable. In interviews with riders and athlete support personnel it appeared to the CIRC that the basic problem was that athletes would go to the limit of what is detectable by the laboratories and this has not changed.”

The US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), who initially charged Armstrong for using performance enhancing drugs in in 2012, were satisfied with Sunday’s news.

“The report confirms that, for more than a decade, UCI leaders treated riders and teams unequally — allowing some to be above the rules,” USADA Chief Executive Travis T. Tygart said.

“The UCI’s favouritism and intentional failure to enforce the anti-doping rules offends the principles of fair play and is contrary to the values on which true sport is based.”

Surge in Entries for Madrid Marathon Following Boston Bombings

The Madrid Marathon has seen a significant rise in entries for Sunday’s event after the tragic bombings in Boston earlier this week.

Borussia Dortmund score partnership with Atlas

German football club Borussia Dortmund have announced two-year partnership with safety footwear manufacturer Atlas. 

As part of the deal, cheap Atlas will benefit from TV-visible branding around Borussia Dortmund’s home ground on matchdays.

Atlas are reported to be paying €600,000 (US$ 638,000) annually.

“I have known and appreciated the company for many years and am very pleased that BVB and Atlas will be taking a common path in future,” said BVB Managing Director Hans-Joachim Watzke.

At their production site in Dortmund, Atlas footwear produce 2.1 million pairs of safety shoes per year.

Excitement grows in Rio on eve of Olympic Modern Pentathlon

Modern Pentathletes gathered at Deodoro Stadium today and spoke of their excitement about competing at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The competition begins on Thursday, August 18 with the Fencing Ranking Round at the Youth Arena in Deodoro Olympic Park. The women begin their round robin at 10am and the men at 2.30pm (local time).

Pavlo Tymoshchenko (UKR), the 2015 men’s world champion, said: “The Olympic Games is the greatest competition on Earth and it feels good to be here”

“Everything is beautiful. Today I came here for a course inspection and some swimming training, and then it will be time to rest and prepare for Fencing tomorrow.”

Haydy Morsy (EGY) was another athlete present at Deodoro Stadium as the jumping test was completed under a hot sun.

Morsy (EGY) said: “I am so excited, and also a little bit worried about it, because it’s my first senior Olympics. I competed at the Youth Olympic Games in 2014 but this is my first time with the seniors. I hope to do well.

“I qualified for the Olympic Games in 2015, so it has been a long time waiting for this. It feels amazing to be here in Rio.”

Charles Fernandez (GUA) added: “It feels great to be here: the ambiance, the people, the music… it’s a great experience to be at my first Olympics.

“Now I just can’t wait to get to compete because I’m living the dream, it’s a dream come true. Psychologically, I think I’m fine. I’m not pressuring myself, which is a good sign. I’m here to enjoy it and to do my job.”

In a remarkable coincidence there are three sets of siblings among the 72 athletes who will compete from August 18-20. The USA is represented by sisters Margaux and Isabella Isaksen and Egypt by brothers Amro and Omar Elgeziry. Chloe Esposito and her younger brother Max will compete for Australia, and they spoke about the competition after arriving in Rio from an altitude training camp in Mexico.

Chloe Esposito (AUS) finished 7th on her Olympic debut at London 2012, and she said: “My strengths are swimming and the Combined Event. Usually in competitions, I start the Combined Event placed somewhere in the middle and I manage to catch up a few places. My goal is to finish a few places higher than I did in London.”

Max Esposito (AUS) added: “I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself for the Games, because I’m the youngest athlete. I’m thinking that all the older athletes are here wanting to get a medal and they are putting pressure on themselves. So I’m going to be cool, calm and collected.”

Dr Klaus Schormann, President of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM), paid tribute to the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee and its President, Carlos Nuzman, after completing an inspection of the facilities at Deodoro Olympic Park.

He said: “The facilities that have been established for the Modern Pentathlon are really perfect and the set-up in the stadium is a real highlight of facility design.

“Brazil has a strong culture and heritage of horse sport which has been supportive to our sport for many years, and the horses selected are absolutely on Olympic level for Modern Pentathlon.

“The swimming pool we are using at the Deodoro Aquatics Center is a legacy of the 2007 Pan American Games, as Carlos Nuzman said it would be.

“In fact the philosophy of the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee was to create a new legacy and here at Deodoro there are now facilities for nine sports which will benefit the local community. Everyone involved in Modern Pentathlon can be proud to be part of that new legacy.

“For our sport, the Olympic Games started with a fantastic moment when Yane Marques carried the flag for Brazil at the Opening Ceremony. For the next three days we can promise Brazil and the rest of the world more fantastic moments – and a show that they will never forget.”

After the Fencing on August 18, the rest of the women’s competition will take place on August 19 from 12pm and the rest of the men’s competition will follow on August 20, also starting at 12pm.

 

Sony acquire broadcasting rights to Caribbean Premier League in India

Sony SIX (a part of Sony Pictures Networks), pills the Indian sports entertainment channel, pharm has retained the broadcasting rights to the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Exclusive: Tokyo 2020 COO Admits Increasing Building Costs Could Force Budget Rethink

The chief operating officer of Tokyo 2020 has told iSportconnect that increasing engineering costs in Japan could force them into readjusting their budget for the Games.

Yukihiko Nunomura was speaking at the Presenting Japan exhibition at the Queen Elizabeth II centre in London this week, arthritis showcasing the country’s preparation for the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Recently, prostate | it was revealed that the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic organising committee have had to scale back costs for Games preparation because of spiralling inflation in Brazil and the national currency continuing on a downward spiral.

Nunomura was sure that Tokyo 2020 had sufficiently safeguarded against the threat of a national or global recession by securing most of the funding from the private sector.

“The current situation is the Tokyo metropolitan office is quite economically stable and they would be taking care of a lot of their events, illness ” he said. “So that should be OK in terms of their infrastructure and the architectural aspects.

“Also, as well as their budget, a lot of it is going to be supported by the sponsorship and the financial aids that is given by the sponsors as well and the number of sponsors is actually more than we anticipated so in both respects it should be OK.

“One of the concerns though is the architectural costs and engineering costs in Japan is increasing steadily, so that may need a slight bit of re-planning. But all in all, we should be OK.”

Tokyo 2020’s revised budget earlier this year drew praise from the International Olympic Committee on their inspection visit, where the figure for new venues was reported to be $2.8billion.

That comes after plans for the new National Stadium in Tokyo were scrapped after the budget for the Zaha Hadid designed venue doubled.

The venue was to play host to the 2019 Rugby World Cup final. Although as the new plan means a new stadium will not be built until 2020, the final has been moved to the International Stadium Yokohama in Kanagawa.

A new stadium design is due to be chosen by December, Nunomura confirmed, and it is thought there will be a simple straightforward approach to the venue with no retractable roof, a reduction in the VIP and hospitality suites and underground parking facilities.

Along with a new stadium, Tokyo also has to decide on a new logo after having to go back to the drawing board on that aspect of the Games as well.

Their original Games logo was accused of copyright as it was too similar to a Belgian theatre logo, so a committee was launched in the summer to address the issue of finding a new emblem.

Nunomura said: “We are hoping to get the stadium up and built by January 2020. So we have more than six months to get the stadium ready and filled for the Games.

“Also, for the logo, we are hoping to select one by March 2016 so it’s going to be ready to be announced to the public in Rio so we can really promote the Tokyo Games.”

Japan do at least have a logo for the 2019 Rugby World Cup which they proudly revealed this week ahead of the final of this year’s edition taking place at Twickenham on Saturday between New Zealand and Australia.

Princess Haya Urges Immediate Reform and Transparency in Sport

Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein threw down the gauntlet to sports bodies to introduce term limits and publish their salaries, in what also could be seen as a hint to scandal-hit organisation FIFA.

Princess Haya, the sister of FIFA presidential candidate Prince Ali, was speaking in London at the Beyond Sport forum when she appealed for reform at the highest level of sport.

iSportconnect understands that the two-term equestrian chief was heavily involved in Prince Ali’s failed bid to unseat Sepp Blatter earlier this year at the FIFA congress in Zurich.

Since then, seperate US and Swiss investigations into allegations of corruption have blighted world football’s governing body with several officials arrested and documents seized from the official headquarters.

Now, with Blatter serving a 90-day suspension from all football due to an ethics investigation involving a disloyal payment made to Michel Platini, Princess Haya sought solidarity with her family’s push for reform.

“For sport to realise its full positive potential, those who govern must guide and direct,” she said.

“Public trust in sport governance must be re-established. And we’re going to have to work very hard to achieve that because it is plain for all to see that better responsible governance is key. That won’t be easy.

“Believe me I know very well how unpopular a reforming leader can make him or herself. My family seems to be making a habit of it recently. And I know how difficult it can be to push reforms through in the face of resistance.

“Good governance means term limits; it means clear processes, clarity of direction and sometimes the staying power to see through a cultural shift and even one in the strong face of resistance. It means publishing salaries, being transparent in front of those who empower us and chose us to represent them. Sport does not exist in a vacuum. Sport needs to be managed properly.”

After announcing his intention to stand down at an extraordinary congress in February of next year, Blatter vowed to push ahead with reforms in FIFA.

However, he refused to disclose his salary. What remains of the FIFA executive committee (without suspended members Blatter, Jerome Valcke and Michel Platini) will meet in Zurich this week for an emergency meeting to discuss the fallout from the crisis.
