Latin American Smartphone Market Charges Ahead

Latin America will be the world’s second-largest smartphone market (behind Asia Pacific) by 2020 with more than 605 million smartphones, capsule  according to a new study by Ooyala, viagra which contains a special LatAm focus.

Ooyala, iSportconnect Official Digital Video Partner, reported a 22% increase in the amount of sports and other premium video inventory available worldwide in the first quarter of 2016, helping to drive a 74% increase in paid ad impressions.

“The second half of 2016 will see a run on the OTT market unlike any we’ve seen before,” the report says. “There will be winners and there will be losers. Not every new service is destined for success, but the players are now out in force. “

Ooyala’s Video Index, a valuable data resource for sports right holders in their approach to the market, draws insights from more than 3.5 billion video analytic events per day from 220 million viewers across the world.

The latest edition shows smartphones and tablets are becoming more popular choices for watching videos during the workday. While PCs remain the principle daytime device, smartphones and tablets have begun to close the gap — and continue to rule evening viewing.

Nearly half (48%) of all video starts in the quarter were on mobile devices, up 129% from Q1 2014 and 14% from a year ago. Video plays on tablets made up 18% of mobile plays in the quarter, the third consecutive quarter of growth despite a slowdown in tablet shipments worldwide.

The report found that helping viewers discover relevant content keeps them on a site longer. On average, viewers watched 40% of all content recommended to them, increasing their time on a website by between 6% and 23%.

IOC backs IAAF Russia ban

The IOC have backed the IAAF’s ban of Russian athletes.

The IAAF had previously said that all Russian athletes would be banned, having failed to make enough progress since their provisonal ban in November.

The IOC confirmed that they will not interfere with international federations’ rulings, it was the IFs’ responsibility to determine the ‘technical eligibility of athletes, in particular in relation to doping issues’.

In another key ruling, the IOC said that because Russia’s doping system had been non-compliant, the “’presumption of innocence’ of athletes… is put seriously into question”.

It will mean athletes will have to activley prove that they are clean – and undertook anti-doping testing in a compliant country – i.e. outside Russia.

But if the athletes can prove that they are clean, the IOC said that they can compete under the Russian flag.

It seems likely only a handful of athletes could prove their innocence to the standard the IOC and IAAF have laid out.

The Russian Olympic commitee has said it will appeal the verdict to CAS – who previously told iSportconnect that they would hear urgent appeals in Rio, just days before the start of the Games.

Aggregators will return – Doug Smith, Vindicia

While traditional media aggregators continue to feel the pressure of new, disruptive companies and technology that dilute their influence, Vindicia’s Senior Vice President, Customer Success Doug Smith, feels that the aggregators still have a role to play, and will make their return.

Doug thinks peak fragmentation is yet to occur, but when it happens aggregators will start to make a comeback.

“I personally think you are going to see it fragment for a while, before it goes back through a phase of re-aggregation. The telecommunications industry is a good model. That fractured into local carriage and increased competition, before it started aggregating into the larger carrier groups again. You’re going to see that in the sport space as well.”

“There are certain advantages for aggregators, if you look at OTT in general, I don’t think that anyone wants to subscribe to the complete list of every series they ever watch on TV. That’s where the aggregators come into play there.”

However Doug thinks sports teams are an exception to the industry. The passion and dedication of the fans will continue to allow new ways of viewing content, that wouldn’t be viable for other content creators:

“Sports occupies a special niche, in that people have a very deep affinity for their sports team. Therefore it can hold itself separate from the rest of the subscription fatigue concern. Sports teams will always be able to engage with their fans in a way that other groups cannot.”

But one group that Doug doesn’t expect to become a measure player in the subscription market is social media.

Twitter and Facebook have both made their first steps into acquiring rights to show sports content, free to air. Twitter in particular have always made clear that their live broadcasting project supplements traditional rights deals, rather than being an attempt to replace it.

Doug felt that social media’s role was based around engagement:

“I think that social media channels are interesting to measure engagement. But ultimately folks are in this to make some money. While it’s nice to have things like Twitter and Facebook  to measure engagement, and allows engagement with people who might not be able to open their wallets today, it’s really just a acquisition channel for a long term relationship with that subscriber.”

As OTT and VOD becoming increasingly important and disruptive in the media market, it will be interesting to see what roles have to play in the emerging market.

Soccerex Day Two: La Liga TV Rights Warning, Prince Ali Plans Candidate Discussions, Maradona Blasts FIFA ‘Anarchy’

By Christian Radnedge

New La Liga TV rights will shake up clubs, says marketing leader

La Liga clubs need to “change their mindset” commercially thanks to the new centralised TV rights legislation, according to a Spanish league marketing expert.

Mario Bayarri is vice-president of the Middle East region for Media Pro, the organisation contracted to handle the media rights for La Liga. He was speaking on Monday at the Soccerex Asian Forum near the Dead Sea resort in Jordan when he explained how clubs were going to benefit from the recent ruling.

Last Thursday the law was passed that from 2016 television rights for La Liga will be sold collectively, rather than individually where clubs negotiated their own deals.

The move has been embraced by the Spanish football community which has been dominated by Real Madrid and Barcelona – last year both clubs shared around 280million Euros between them.

SoccerexAsianForum8But Bayarri warned that clubs will have to work harder in the commercial field to truly exploit the value of increased exposure.

“We need to make the League work so that more revenues come, and we can attract more players especially now that we have a very strong shift-change in the domestic rights sales,” he said.

“Today one of the lowest teams in the Premier League will have the same revenue as the number three or four or five of the Premier League so that when they go to the transfer market (they have money to spend).

“So our clubs need to change their mindset. They need to be able to market the rights, go to their partners with these rights to get more revenues.”

The new legislation ensures that no club should end up receiving less than they do now.

Prince Ali Denies Reports he Will Pull Out of FIFA race

SoccerexAsianForum1Prince Ali bin al Hussein denied that he was considering pulling out of the FIFA presidential race contrary to earlier reports.

An interview with the BBC World Football programme had included quotes where it seemed the Jordanian Prince indicated he would consider withdrawing from the campaign in order to rally behind one single challenger to president Sepp Blatter.

But, speaking to reporters following the conclusion of the Soccerex Asian Forum at the Dead Sea Resort in Jordan, Prince Ali claims his quotes were taken out of context and that he was fully focused on bidding to become president alongside fellow candidates Michael van Praag of the Netherlands and former Portugal international Luis Figo.

“I think it’s taken out of context what I was saying,” he said. “The message I’m trying to make is that it’s not about one person, but that it would be ideal if we come to the conclusion as to who as a candidate has the best chance of winning and we support that candidate.

“But having said that, I am not considering withdrawing.”

Blatter is seeking a fifth term in office and is expected to retain the support of FIFA’s 209 member associations at the congress in Zurich on May 29.

Van Praag and Figo last week also had to deny that they were considering pulling out amidst reports.

Prince Ali confirmed the three challengers were to meet soon.

He said: “It [meeting] will happen obviously, hopefully before the congress. But let me make it clear: I am not withdrawing from the race.”

In the original BBC interview, Prince Ali had said: “The important thing is that we support the person who has the best chance of making a change in FIFA.

“At some point there will be a discussion about that.”

Maradona closes conference in style

SoccerexAsianForum7The Soccerex Asian Forum closed with probably the busiest session the event is ever likely to see when Diego Maradona was interviewed.

The presentation suite was packed out as the Argentine legend recounted famous moments from his glittering career – including his famous goal against England in the 1986 World Cup which he went on to win as captain.

However, while at the forum Maradona launched a stinging attack on FIFA president Sepp Blatter and said that the organisation, which has been blighted by allegations of corruption, was in “anarchy”.

He said: “As the football world knows, inside FIFA there is total anarchy, where there is only one man [Blatter] who decides everything. But he knows absolutely nothing. Therefore it is time for a change. And it is so because even his colleagues should actually advise him to leave.

“He has done a lot of damage to football since he has been there. It’s time for him to step aside and let us, who are full of strength, renovate football.

“Because football is becoming poorer and more corrupt.”

With such a strong finish to the event, a third edition in the region next year would look to be fairly likely.
