Top European football clubs sign up for Betting on Football 2017
Betting on Football has demonstrated its pulling power amongst top football clubs in Europe by attracting representatives from clubs such as Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Celtic, VfL Wolfsburg, Arsenal, Chelsea, Rangers, Charlton Athletic, AC Milan, AS Roma, and organisations like La Liga and Scottish Football Association, for the three-day event at Stamford Bridge (3-5 May).
Representatives at #bofcon2017 will include Mark Davies, Head of New Business for reigning Premier League Champions Leicester, Tom Carter, Director of Partnership Sales for City Football Group, Adrian Filby, the Commercial Director at runaway Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic, and Daniel Peikert, Head of Sales at 2009 Bundesliga winners Wolfsburg.
Peikert commented: “We are attending Betting on Football 2017 because, as a 100% subsidiary of Volkswagen, VfL Wolfsburg has a big responsibility to attract serious partners. We also want to prepare ourselves for virtual advertising with more betting partners. Corporate social responsibility should play a central role within these partnerships.
Meanwhile, after impressing on the Club Call panel at last year’s conference, Leicester’s Davies will be speaking on the Premier Partners panel. The session, which headlines the marketing and media track on day two, will be explaining the emphasis on foreign markets for front-of-shirt sponsorships and looking at opportunities for UK-based gambling companies in elite level football.
The international appeal of the event is underlined by the presence of Peikert, alongside AC Milan COO Jaap Kalma, AS Roma Managing Director Mauro Baldissoni, Juventus Head of International Sales & Sponsorship, and a high-profile double act from La Liga, Adolfo Bara (Managing Director of Sales & Marketing) and Alfredo Lorenzo (Integrity and Security Director).
Lorenzo will be an interested observer at the first day leadership track session on match fixing, ‘Keeping it clean’, which will feature Bill South, Group Director of Security and Community Affairs at William Hill, Peter McLaughlin, Security & Integrity Officer for the Scottish Football Association, and Ivor Heller, Commercial Director at AFC Wimbledon.
Heller commented: “I’ve long been interested in betting and its curious relationship with football on a business level. I’m keen to share our experience at club level on the FA’s blanket ban on betting across the sport and its implications for integrity, and the Betting on Football conference provides a great opportunity and platform for that.”

Patrick Baumann has been named the new Chairman of the IOC Evaluation Commission for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
He replaces former Namibian sprinter Frankie Fredericks, who resigned from his roles with IAAF and IOC after allegations of corruption against him.
He denies any allegations of wrongdoing, but has stepped down from his roles and declared he will not vote for the 2024 host in Lima later this year.
Fredericks was chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission between 2008 and 2012 and served as a scrutineer during the vote won by Rio 2016.
Baumann, secretary general of the International Basketball Federation and President of SportAccord, has been confirmed as the new chairman in a statement by the IOC yesterday.
The Swiss was already a member of the commission, but has now stepped up to lead the body.

Premier League Clubs make January Profit For First Time
Premier League clubs have made a January transfer window profit for the first time. The twenty English top flight clubs brought in £40m more than they paid out in the transfer window, which ended yesterday (January 31).
Despite a six-year January high spend of £215m, Premier League clubs received a cumulative income of around £255m in player sales. Almost a third of that figure was paid out by Chinese Super League clubs, with Chelsea midfielder Oscar and Watford striker Odion Ighalo heading to the high-spending Asian league. Four of the five most lucrative deals were players leaving the Premier League, with Memphis Depay and Dimitri Payet also leaving for France on big-money deals.
Premier League clubs spent a record £1.38bn on players during the 2016-17 season, with the January contribution being dwarfed by the £1.165bn paid out during the summer. The Premier League was comfortably the highest-spending European League, having accumulated a layout of £85m more than second-placed France.
“The sales of Oscar, Dimitri Payet, Odion Ighalo and Memphis Depay, as well as around £20m worth of sales to Championship clubs, have helped Premier League clubs record net receipts for the first time in a transfer window,” said Deloitte spokesman Dan Jones.
“As was the case last year, it is clubs in the bottom half of the table who have driven expenditure this January, investing in their squads in an attempt to secure survival.”
BBC to Broadcast 2021 Rugby League World Cup
UK broadcaster BBC will show live coverage of every fixture at the 2021 Rugby League World Cup in England.
Over half the 31 fixtures will be shown live on BBC One or BBC Two, with the remaining matches to be available on Red Button and online services.
The BBC will also broadcast the 2017 edition, which will be held in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
The reigning Rugby League World Cup champions are Australia, who defeated New Zealand 34-2 in the 2013 final.
ITV and Sky Secure Rights to England Football
Commercial broadcaster ITV and pay-television corporation Sky have snapped up the latest rights packages to the England national football team.
Under the agreement, ITV will exclusively show live England qualifiers for EURO 2020 and the World Cup in 2022. The broadcaster, whose previous deal expired in 2018, will also hold exclusive rights to air live pre-tournament warm-up matches, should England qualify for each competition.
Sky has acquired live rights to air all home nations’ matches during the new UEFA Nations League tournament. The pay-television giant have secured rights to broadcast live coverage of all Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland qualifiers. Highlights of England qualifiers will also be available on Sky.
It has been reported that the deals will be worth £45m annually to the English Football Association.
IBU Hands Russian Body Deadline For Doping Allegations
The International Biathlon Union (IBU) has opened a formal investigation into the Russian Biathlon Union.
A total of 29 Russian athletes were placed under investigation last month following the McLaren Report alleging a systematic doping program in Russian athletics, with 22 having been cleared due a lack of evidence.
However, the remaining seven athletes have not been exonerated to date, and the IBU have handed the Russian Biathlon Union a deadline of February 9 to provide a detailed report on what role the remaining athletes played in the doping enquiry.
Eight Sports to Challenge UK Sport Funding
Eight sports will challenge the UK Sport funding allowance they have been handed for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games in Tokyo.
Seven sports were due to receive no funding for the four-year pre-Olympic cycle, with powerlifting also challenging their allocation of the overall funding.
Tuesday, January 17 was the deadline for appeals against the decisions – with a controversial decision to cut badminton funding amongst the major talking points.
Britain won a men’s doubles bronze medal in the sport at the Rio 2016 games, with Badminton England CEO Adrian Christy declaring he believes Badminton has a ”really strong case” to win their challenge to gain funding.
The decision to strip Wheelchair Rugby of funding has also been criticised in some quarters as discriminatory.
