Eight Sports to Challenge UK Sport Funding

January 17, 2017

Eight sports will challenge the UK Sport funding allowance they have been handed for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games in Tokyo.

Seven sports were due to receive no funding for the four-year pre-Olympic cycle, with powerlifting also challenging their allocation of the overall funding.

Tuesday, January 17 was the deadline for appeals against the decisions – with a controversial decision to cut badminton funding amongst the major talking points.

Britain won a men’s doubles bronze medal in the sport at the Rio 2016 games, with Badminton England CEO Adrian Christy declaring he believes Badminton has a ”really strong case” to win their challenge to gain funding.

The decision to strip Wheelchair Rugby of funding has also been criticised in some quarters as discriminatory.
