Wal-Mart Sign Non-Exclusive Licensing Agreement with NASCAR

A non-exclusive licensing agreement has been reached between NASCAR and the world’s largest retailer Wal-Mart, to make apparel, home goods and other products bearing NASCAR, driver and team marks and imagery.

The deal is Wal-Mart’s first licensing agreement with a major sports property after agreeing to a three-year deal with options for an extension with NASCAR. Wal-Mart will pay a licensing royalty, but terms of that royalty were not available.

Wal-Mart plans to support its licensing agreement over the next two weeks with a special “Race Time” promotion that begins today in more than 1,500 stores nationwide. The “Race Time” promotion will feature nearly a dozen of NASCAR’s sponsors such as Coca-Cola, Mars and Miller-Coors in a specially branded area of the store.

Baltimore Aim to Convince DC United into Relocation

Major League Soccer (MLS) side DC United are trying to be convinced by the local Development Corp. in the city of Baltimore, clinic Maryland, ask to relocate by highlighting the economic benefits gained from a new Westport based, soccer-specific stadium.

The possibility of a move has been in talks by representatives of the club and the city respectively but formal discussions are on hold until a commitment is made with regards to a facility. The possibilities of both a 25,000-seater stadium in Westport or the far smaller option of a 10,000,seat venue.

According to a feasibility study produced on the proposals, 940 new jobs could be generated through a new soccer-specific stadium with US$2.8m in city tax revenue. It was also stated that the stadium could host 49 to 54 events every year, including 17 DC United games. Spectator spending has been estimated at between $65.7 and $78 million each year.

Coca-Cola Extend Eintracht Frankfurt Sponsor

A three-year deal has been agreed which will see Coca-Cola extend their sponsorship of German Bundesliga soccer club Eintracht Frankfurt.

Coca-Cola will remain a second tier partner of the club, with pouring rights for non-alcoholic drinks at the club’s home ground, the Commerzbank Arena. Coca-Cola will also participate in a range of promotional activities in a deal thought to be worth an estimated US$450,000 a year.

Heribert Bruchhagen, Eintracht Frankfurt chairman said that the support of a global brand like Coca-Cola would help the club build for the future.

Welcome Boost for England 2018 World Cup Bid

Fears of a negative effect on England’s World Cup bid after a BBC’s Panorama documentary have been boosted substantially in a report issued by FIFA’s executive committee. The report revealed that if England were to win the bid to host the 2018 World Cup they would generate the highest income over their rival bidders.

England’s bid achieved a maximum rating over the areas of ticketing, television and media rights, sponsorship, hospitality and merchandising and licensing.

With regards to England’s rivals in the bid to host the 2018 World Cup, Spain and Portugal were their closest competitors receiving a rating of 91 per cent whilst the current favourites to host the tournament, Russia achieved the lowest score of 86 per cent. The remaining bid nation of Holland and Belgium achieved an 87 per cent rating in the report.

The boost will be a welcome result to all involved with the England World Cup bid after the BBC Panorama special was thought to have dented the bid’s chances of approval. The programme has come under criticism from a wide range of sources which believe the content to be dated and the timing to be detrimental to the nation’s hosting hopes.

The bid team is now eagerly anticipating the decision which will be made on Thursday with the likes of Prince William, Prime Minister David Cameron and David Beckham all backing the bid amongst the presentation team.

Hispania Racing announces new technical agreement with Williams F1

Hispania Racing, symptoms HRT F1 Team announced that it has reached an agreement with Williams F1, who will supply the Spanish team with its proprietary gearbox technology.

The arrangement will commence to support Hispania Racing’s 2011 programme and will extend for the lifecycle of the current Cosworth engine technology.

Report: Tottenham Hotspur Award First Contract for New Stadium

Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly awarded the first contract package on their £400m stadium.

According to a report by Sky Sports News, bronchi Essex based Anderson group has secured a £50m deal for the stadium foundations and concrete structures like upper floors and stairways.

Anderson carried-out a similar package of works on Tottenham’s £45m Training Academy at Bulls Cross in Enfield, Middlesex where McLaren Construction was main contractor.

Sky Sports News said it had seen a letter sent from Savills to Haringey Council.

The letter stated: “THFC have today entered into a Joint Contracts Tribunal (JCT) Design and Build Contract for the civil engineering ground works, concrete foundations and structure for the new THFC Stadium Project.

“The contract has been made with M Anderson Construction Ltd and the sum for the works is £49.773.727.”

The club will also be forced to play homes games away from White Hart Lane for a season during building work.

The original plan was to move into a new ground for the 2017/18 season and White Hart Lane would have hosted matches during construction work.

But a legal challenge by landowners at the north London site has forced a change of plan.

Wentworth Golf Club Bought by Chinese Investment Group

Wentworth, sick home of the PGA European Tour, order has been bought by Chinese-based international investment group Reignwood Investments. 

Reignwood Investments bought the privately-owned golf club and health resort in Virginia Water, Surrey, from WG Acquisition Ltd., for a reported £135million. Among other clubs it owns is Reignwood Pine Valley, in Beijing, which has been named the most popular course in Asia.

Wentworth is the venue of the BMW PGA Championship and hosted the first Ryder Cup. It features three 18-hole golf courses, a 9-hole par 3 executive course, a bespoke TaylorMade Performance Lab, a clubhouse with restaurants, bars, private meeting and dining rooms for up to 300 guests, bedroom accommodation and a shop and locker rooms.

Chobani Partners with IMG to Access University Students

Sports media company IMG has signed a multi-year deal with Greek Yogurt maker Chobani to increase brand awareness and yogurt consumption at colleges and universities through increased distribution and visibility on campuses and at retailers coast to coast. 

The partnership, which aims to naturally power college athletes, students, teachers and alumni with food options will launch with 17 universities and grow to more than 27 by its third year.

Former Caterham F1 Staff Launch Legal Action

Former staff of the struggling Caterham F1 team are set to launch legal action against the team after being dismissed.

About 40 people, including several senior staff members, were released on the eve of the German Grand Prix after a consortium of Middle Eastern and Swiss investors took over the team.

A statement issued on Monday on behalf of the group of former staff said: “The summary dismissal of employees from Caterham was done without warning or consultation and will result in significant compensation claims against the team.

“Caterham has also reneged on promises that the employees would at least be paid in July. Lawyers for the group will take immediate action.

“It is understood that the employees, many of whom have supported the F1 team during its four years in the championship, will be requesting the FIA – as a responsible regulator – to fully investigate the F1 team’s conduct and the circumstances in relation to its recent change of ownership.”

The team has struggled this season at the back of the grid withour a single point. 

Red Bull Global Rallycross to Return to DirtFish for Penultimate Round of 2014 Season

Red Bull Global Rallycross have announced that the series will return to DirtFish in Snoqualmie, bronchi near Seattle, abortion WA, for the penultimate round of the 2014 Red Bull GRC season.

The two-day event will take place on Friday, September 26, and Saturday, September 27, and will be broadcast on Sunday, September 28, at 1PM ET on NBC.

“We’re very excited to bring Red Bull Global Rallycross back to the Seattle market this September,” said Red Bull GRC CEO Colin Dyne. “Returning to Seattle has been a priority for us, and we’re pleased to partner with DirtFish to bring world-class racing to their grounds once again.”

“Returning to the site of the second-ever GRC event, and one of our all time favorite tracks, is something we’re really excited about,” continued Chip Pankow, COO. “We can’t wait to welcome back the fans from season one and see many new ones—they’ll be able to witness the progress the series has made since those early days first hand.”

The event will mark the second time that Red Bull Global Rallycross has visited DirtFish grounds, hosting a two-day show at the location back in April 2011. The event was a fan favorite, providing incredible race action through the dirt and an abandoned warehouse. Olsbergs MSE principal Andreas Eriksson won the first day’s event, while two-time Red Bull GRC champion Tanner Foust won the second day’s finale.

In 2014, the series will return to DirtFish with a completely reconfigured track and many fresh faces. Foust and Rhys Millen will headline the Red Bull GRC drivers making their return to the venue, while Olsbergs MSE, Subaru Rally Team USA, and Hyundai/Rhys Millen Racing will also visit DirtFish as part of the series for the second time.

“People are still talking about the event we had in 2011 and we are often asked when we are going to have another one,” said DirtFish’s Marketing Director Troy Jorgensen. “We are very excited to have Red Bull GRC return to DirtFish and expect this event to be a favorite for both the fans and the drivers this season.”
