How LaLiga’s OTT Platform Is Building A New Global Following

In the next ten years, more than 50% of audiovisual revenue will arrive through over-the-top (OTT) streaming services. That’s the opinion of Jose Carlos Franco, Managing Director of LaLiga’s business intelligence and analytics department.

With such a dramatic shift in the broadcast landscape, rights holders will have to become experts in this new technology, which is why LaLiga became the first major football competition to develop its own OTT service, LaLigaSportsTV.

But doing so does not just represent a new platform to show live sport. As Franco explained, the world of OTT offers an enormous opportunity for data analysis, helping competitions to understand their fans better and build new followings across the world.

“We ask two questions in our department. Who are our fans and how do they behave?” Franco said. “With our OTT platform, we are perfectly positioned to develop better knowledge of our users and how they consume sport, which can then be used to grow our audience.”

LaLigaSportsTV is a multi-channel platform that was created to provide coverage of less-mainstream Spanish sports, rather than broadcast LaLiga matches. In its first year, the service has streamed 1,145 live events and provided on-demand coverage from 35 different sports across smartphones, tablets, PC and Smart TV environments. In this time, it has accumulated 410,000 registered users.

To Franco, each of these users provides a unique data footprint that can help LaLiga to improve its offering. “We have designed dashboards that show the location of every user, how many times they use the app per week, which sports they follow, how long they watch and which device they use,” he explained, adding that all information is strictly anonymised.

“By sharing this insight with our marketing teams, we can then send notifications or recommendations for a specific match, TV service or event. This has been very effective.”

The International Mixed Martial Arts Federation Resumes Legal Action Against WADA

The International Mixed Martial Arts Federation has resumed legal action against the World Anti-Doping Association, in order to gain WADA signatory status. The case will be heard in Lausanne on the 14th of January.

The IMMAF said in a statement:

IMMAF is challenging the decision in the ordinary Swiss Courts because IMMAF’s application to WADA for signatory status has been rejected.

IMMAF CEO Densign White, said: “At the end of August 2019 we accepted a request of WADA to postpone our court case (scheduled for 4 September) to allow them more time to review the current procedure for a sport organisation to become a signatory. But now WADA has asked for a further 5 months extension which the IMMAF Board of Directors has unanimously rejected.”

“We regret that we have to take legal action, but it seems to be the only way to force this issue. WADA should be a fully independent body but maintain that they need a green light from GAISF to accept IMMAF as a signatory. We continue to wait for GAISF to consider our application for Observer status. As a WADA code compliant sport, we should also be a WADA signatory. Without this status IMMAF’s sanctions are easily bypassed to the detriment of our athletes, their safety and Clean Sport.” said White.

IMMAF first implemented an anti-doping policy based on the World Anti-Doping Code and Standards in 2015. In-competition testing was introduced at its international Amateur MMA tournaments, commencing with the 2015 IMMAF World Championships. IMMAF works with the internationally renowned expert consultancy, Sporting Integrity Ltd, headed by Michele Verroken, to develop its anti-doping policy and programme.

“IMMAF’s application to WADA is a crucial part of being recognised by the Sport Movement. Signing up to WADA means promoting development, open access to funding, professional services and our authority to safeguard participants,” said White. “As we start 2020, we are resolute in pursuit of international recognition which benefits our member federations and our athletes.”

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern Dies Aged 77

David Stern, former Commissioner of the National Basketball Association, passed away on the first of January at the age of 77 following a brain haemorrhage suffered in mid December.

Stern, the longtime Commissioner, transformed the NBA and bought it into the modern era while developing the sport massively both in the United States and globally.

He also helped to create the WNBA and took the game abroad for the first time, with regular season fixtures being played in Japan, Mexico, England and later this month in France.

His tenure was not without controversy, as he oversaw the acrimonious relocation of Seattle’s franchise to Oklahoma City, a refereeing match-fixer and a number of player lockouts.

Adam Silver, NBA Commissioner said in a statement:

“For 22 years, I had a courtside seat to watch David in action. He was a mentor and one of my dearest friends. We spent countless hours in the office, at arenas and on planes wherever the game would take us. Like every NBA legend, David had extraordinary talents, but with him it was always about the fundamentals – preparation, attention to detail, and hard work.

“David took over the NBA in 1984 with the league at a crossroads. But over the course of 30 years as Commissioner, he ushered in the modern global NBA.  He launched groundbreaking media and marketing partnerships, digital assets and social responsibility programs that have brought the game to billions of people around the world.  Because of David, the NBA is a truly global brand – making him not only one of the greatest sports commissioners of all time but also one of the most influential business leaders of his generation.

“Every member of the NBA family is the beneficiary of David’s vision, generosity and inspiration.  Our deepest condolences go out to David’s wife, Dianne, their sons, Andrew and Eric, and their extended family, and we share our grief with everyone whose life was touched by him.”
