Portsmouth have seen new lows after Vladimir Antonov resigned as chairman of Portsmouth after the owner’s company was placed into administration.

The Russian businessman, whose company Convers Sports Initiatives bought Pompey in June, has also quit as a director of the club following the news. The company responsible for operating the team – Portsmouth Football Club Limited – continues to trade and is not in administration, though it is now actively seeking new funding.

Pompey chief executive David Lampitt said: “After the extraordinary amount of work put in by so many people over the last 18 months to get to this point, it is incredibly disappointing for the club to find itself in this position. I want to assure staff and fans that we will continue to do everything possible to safeguard the position of the club and its longer-term future.”

An official statement released by Portsmouth said: “The club’s parent company, Convers Sports Initiatives plc (CSI), has been placed into administration. Vladimir Antonov has resigned as chairman and director of Portsmouth Football Club.

“The club has funding in place for the short term, but will now be seeking alternative investment for its longer-term requirements.”

The English Football League is looking to fans to help select its Official Charity Partner for the 2012/13 Season after launching a new online voting system.

From 89 applications, six charities have been shortlisted to follow in the footsteps of Help for Heroes, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Help the Hospices – the previous and current League charities.

The 2012/13 shortlisted charities are: Anthony Nolan, British Heart Foundation, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, NSPCC, The Prostate Cancer Charity and St John Ambulance.

Alongside fans, the chief executive of every Football League club and each member of staff at The League will also vote for their preferred organisation.

Football League head of communications, John Nagle, said: “The Football League is committed to supporting good causes, especially those demonstrating close community links in and around our 72 clubs. We have seen fantastic support from fans and clubs for our charity partners during the past three seasons and we see their input at this stage as an integral part of the selection process.’

“The quality of entries was again exceptionally high and each of the shortlisted charities will make a difference to the communities around our clubs. I would encourage all fans to take the time to read the shortlist and make their selection.”

The vote will stay open for a week and a half, closing at midday on Wednesday 7th December.

The charities will then be ranked by number of votes received – the most popular receiving six points, the second five points and so on. The totals will then be calculated from all three groups with the winner ratified by The Football League Board

English Football League Championship side Bristol City’s financial losses have continued as they announced deficits in excess of £11million for the financial year ending May 31, 2011.

The npower Championship club reported a loss of £11,454,525, compared to the record deficit of £11,808,085 for the previous financial year.

Turnover increased from £11.1million to £11.9million, but staff costs also rose from £13.8million to £15.9million. The stadium project incurred a loss of £0.6million in 2011 compared with £1.9million the previous year.

City chairman Colin Sexstone insists the wage bill must come down if costs are to be brought under control, and he warned that players may have to be sold in order to help balance the books.

“The thing that stands out in this set of accounts is that our costs are far too high for the level of income we are taking. That is not acceptable and, clearly, we have to reduce our wage bill,” Sexstone said. “We are losing too much and we have to get those losses down to a sensible level. We need to have a football club that runs at a more sustainable level.

“We are going to have to be clever with players we bring in and also foster our youth development system. We will also have to sell players at certain times. I am not saying we want to become a selling club, but there will be occasions when we will need to be.”

“I just find it unbelievable. I cannot start to try to understand what his family are going through.

“Gary had a lot of talent and that talent became his job. Footballers are subject to all the stress and strains of things that happen in life.

“He was a star in the truest sense. For him at 42 to leave us is such a tragic loss. He had a life of success to look forward to.”

Current Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish explained: “It was best for us to make the decision for Craig. He was very close to Gary, who was a mentor to him, and he admired and looked up to him.

“Bellamy was upset and football is not as important as grieving and I made the decision.

“Football becomes irrelevant at times like this but he was a well-respected man in football for his ability and as a person.

“I signed Gary for £5m from Everton and he did a fantastic job at Newcastle. It would be disrespectful to Gary if we didn’t get on with the game so we have to do that as best as we can.”

Speed’s assistant coach Osian Roberts emotionally opened up about the tragic news saying: “It is tragic news, totally unbelievable.

“We looked forward to Wales camps because he led by example from the front, making people work harder, demanding more and everyone wanted to do their best because he was a generous person.

“I know I speak for everyone when I say everyone in the Welsh camp is devastated.”

Former Welsh international Robbie Savage shed a tear for his close pal, adding: “I spoke to him yesterday and he was in high spirits. I just can’t believe it. He was my mate and he’s gone.

“He’s left two gorgeous kids behind. Gary was [a professional]. He was one of the fittest guys. He looked after his body.

“He was a great team-mate, a great manager.

“He was joking yesterday [on Saturday about Robbie being on Strictly Come Dancing], saying don’t get a two off Craig [Revel Horwood].”

Prior to taking up the position of manager for his country, the Welshman enjoyed an illustrious playing career, enjoying spells at Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle and Bolton. He also captured 85 caps for his country during a 14-year international career.

Xavier Gonzalez, Chief Executive of International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has admitted that they would have preferred greater coverage of the Paralympic Games in the United States.

NBC, who enjoyed record viewing figures for their coverage of London 2012, failed to show a single minute of live action of the Paralympic Games, opting instead to screen merely four 60-minute highlight packages.

NBC, who have also been heavily criticised for the quality of their broadcast and very odd decision making, have partially catered to those who desired to follow the Games by producing daily highlights packages offer the US Paralympic YouTube Channel.

Gonzalez acknowledges that the coverage has travelled a long way since eight years ago, but points to the high standards set by Channel 4 as an example that American broadcasters should follow.

He said: “We are on a journey to Rio 2016 and if we compare where the US market was two Games ago to now, we have done very well,” said Gonzalez.

“But ideally we would like more coverage.

“Now we have the example that Channel 4 has created here in Britain, and what the Brazilians, and other countries in the world are doing.

“So we are in a much better position to go back to the United States and increase the coverage there.”

However, despite the American snub, Gonzalez was pleased with the overall international coverage the Games enjoyed.

He added: “We have had outstanding media coverage online, on radio and TV, both nationally and internationally.

“As a good example, the victory the other day of Alan Oliveira [against Oscar Pistorius in the men’s 200 metres T44 final on September 2] knocked out all of the football news in Brazil and you can probably understand that’s quite a big deal.

“We have also seen the media changing their focus to the athleticism of the athletes and the competition and we have seen a lot more athletes being portrayed and becoming more popular.

“It’s now critical for us that that momentum continues and we have coverage of all the World Championships and regional championships over the next four years.”
