More Than A Third of European Players Not Receiving Full Salaries, Explains FIFPro Boss

With two weeks having passed since the transfer window slammed shut, Theo van Seggelen, the head of the game’s international players’ union, has revealed that more than a third of Europe’s professional footballers are not receiving their salaries in full.

The head of FIFPro is looking to completely alter the current situation, highlighting the erratic and irresponsible spending of club owners during such an unfavourable economic climate for the players not being paid what they are owed.

He said: “If the patient is sick, you have to give him some medicine.

“More and more clubs are getting into financial difficulty but they are behaving as if nothing has happened.

“Everybody is thinking about himself and no-one is respecting contracts any more.

“It’s time to completely re-evaluate the transfer regulations.”

According to van Seggelen, player power is a major problem in the sport, pointing to numerous occasions where players have wound down their contract to bargain for more money.

He said: “Look at someone like Robin van Persie.

“He is bought by Manchester United for more than €30 million (£24 million/$39 million) even though he had only one year left on his Arsenal contract.

“He’s a good example of huge salaries being paid to the top players with no money left for anyone else.”

Consequently, van Seggelen believes that it is the footballers lower down the pecking order in less fortunate positions that suffer.

“We think the money should be spent on the education of young players rather than on players coming to the end of long contracts,” he said.

“The current system creates a rat race that makes it more difficult for the average player to get a job.

“We have to do something about this.”

“We are 100 per cent behind Financial Fair Play [regulations] and nor are we saying players don’t earn their money,” he insisted.

“But all this haggling has to stop.

“When a player signs a contract that should be binding – for both sides.

“We estimate that more than 30 per cent of players at smaller clubs Europe-wide are not receiving their salaries.

“I’m not just talking about Eastern Europe but also in countries like Spain and Portugal.

“Partly it is because of this game of Russian roulette that is going on at the top of the game, either offering re-contracted players too much money or selling them on at a huge fee.

Ukraine National Olympic Committee Official Quits Over Alleged Ticket Scam

Volodymyr Gerashchenkol the general secretary of Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee has resigned over allegations he offered to sell thousands of dollars worth of tickets for the London Games on the black market.
The committee said in a statement on Monday on its website that Gerashchenko, the second highest-ranking official on the 149-member body, stepped down after an emergency meeting last Friday.
It added that an investigating panel had been set up to probe the allegations, which stem from a BBC report which said that Gerashchenko had offered to sell up to 100 tickets for the July 27-August12 Games to a reporter posing as a buyer.
“After the meeting of the executive committee, the general secretary resigned. At the same time. V. Gerashchenko gave an assurance that he would cooperate fully with the investigation,” the statement said.
“Ukraine’s NOC will do everything it can to clarify all aspects of the affair.”
Gerashchenko, 56, who has been in his post since 1997, was temporarily suspended from his role on May 22 when news of the scandal broke during Olympic meetings in Quebec City.
The Ukraine Olympic Committee was allotted 2,900 tickets for distribution to various officials and groups.
It said that Gerashchenko’s functions as general secretary required him to go to London to ensure the accreditation there of Ukraine’s athletes and official delegation.
The affair casts a shadow over the former Soviet republic’s international image as it prepares to co-host the European soccer Championship with Poland next month.

Platini Pushing To Change The European Calendar For 2022 Winter World Cup

Domestic football in Europe could cease for an entire month in December to make way for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup to be staged in winter.

UEFA President believes that the only solution would be to change the European calendar, meaning that the usual football season would finish in June.

He said: “I hope it will take place in winter and I’m still pushing for that.

“It would be far better for the fans.”

January had seemed as the most appropriate time of the year to hold the prestigious tournament, since the sizzling heat in Qatar would make for unbearable playing conditions.

“It couldn’t be January because that would clash with the Winter Olympics so that means November-December,” Platini said.

“Obviously we’d have to stop playing in Europe at that time and extending the season into June.

“For me that wouldn’t be a problem.”
