FIFA Rejoice at WADA’s Decision to Drop Case Opposing Mexican Ruling on Doping

FIFA have welcomed the decision taken by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to withdraw its appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding the decision not to sanction five Mexican footballers who tested positive for clenbuterol during the CONCACAF Gold Cup in June 2011.

Five Mexican soccer players who tested positive for the druf before the Gold Cup will not face sanctions after FIFA determined the tests were caused by contaminated meat.

The WADA said Wednesday it had dropped its appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, ampoule where it planned to challenge a Mexico Football Federation decision clearing the players of doping.

This announcement by WADA confirms the initial decision taken by the Mexican Football Association’s Disciplinary Committee to clear the players of any wrongdoing, troche which FIFA agreed with and supported after surveying the case. The studies conducted by FIFA showed the correctness of the footballers’ claim that the positive samples were the result of meat they had ingested at a training camp ahead of the tournament.

WADA looked at FIFA studies and research, including compelling evidence from a FIFA study at the U-17 World Cup in Mexico that indicates a serious health problem in Mexico with regard to meat contaminated with clenbuterol. FIFA studies have helped assist Mexican authorities in their fight to tackle this public health issue, which is now being urgently addressed by the Mexican government.

“WADA applauds FIFA for the further research it has initiated,” the anti-doping watchdog said in a statement.

Premier League tops shirt sponsorship in Europe

The English Premier League is this season’s leader in shirt sponsorship revenue amongst the top six European leagues. The EPL’s €128 million revenue leapfrogged the German Bundesliga with a €45 million increase.

Revenue stalled in Netherlands, which is placed sixth with €42 million, while the Italian Serie A was the only league to post a drop, with shirt sponsorship revenue now standing at €65.9 million. Two of Serie A’s two major clubs – Lazio and Fiorentina – are currently sponsorless however the league remained in the third position.

Red Bull boss denies A1-Ring return

Red Bull Racing owner and Austrian businessman, find Dietrich Mateschitz, has dismissed reports that the A1-Ring circuit could be making a return to the Formula One calendar.

It has been rumoured that the Austrian Grand Prix, which dropped off the F1 calendar in 2003, could be in line for a return after the A1-Ring underwent major reconstruction work, expected to be finalised midway through next year.

Work on the circuit, which includes new pit buildings and grandstands, cost an estimated US$88 million, and was backed by Mateschitz.

However, the Red Bull boss insists a comeback is not on the cards. He said: “This is unbelievable nonsense. Unfortunately, such stupidity was adopted and disseminated by numerous media. All I can say is that Bernie knows nothing about it, and neither do I. There is nothing to it.”

Clubs Convention Looks to Basketball’s Future in Europe

A historic gathering of nearly 100 clubs and national leagues representatives from across the continent came together for a first-of-its kind European Basketball Clubs Convention in Barcelona on Wednesday to debate the future of their sport.

The convention, organized by Euroleague Basketball, established a platform to decide where basketball needs to focus its attention, resources and effort in order to attract more fans to the game and build a competition model that will assure growth and success for years to come.

The convention attendees heard from experts inside and outside of basketball, namely Jordi Bertomeu, President and CEO of Euroleague Basketball; Shimon Mizrahi, President of current Turkish Airlines Euroleague champion Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv; Jan Pommer, Managing Director of the Beko Basketball Bundesliga of Germany; Ioris Francini, President of IMG Media & Events, and Andrea Agnelli, President of Juventus FC. The discussion was also open to fans and media on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #BasketballFuture.

“This convention is a space of reflection and debate about our future, where everyone has the opportunity to make their opinions heard,” Mr. Bertomeu said while welcoming everyone. “Here, we want to share the strategies, the vision of future, and the paths we need to follow to keep on growing.”

The paramount role of the clubs in deciding the roadmap to basketball’s long-term future in Europe formed the basis of a speech by Mr Mizrahi of Maccabi, the longest-serving club president in Europe.
“The sports club is like a company in every way, since it is their owners and managers, and only them, who have to determine the club policy,” Mr. Mizrahi said. “It isn’t logical that a third party would instruct them how to run their business. “We must support and strengthen the clubs if we want there to be a bright future for basketball.”

How model clubs should look in the future was the subject of a presentation by Mr. Pommer of the German BBL, who emphasized that a much-needed sustainability at the club level requires diversification of revenue sources and coming closer to fans by knowing, and fulfilling, their interests.
“My perspective is you should invest in stones and not only bones. Invest in gyms, structures and other professionals, not only players,” Mr. Pommer said. “Sports management must be based on continuity, long-term thinking, not short-term thinking. I know it’s a challenge with the media, fans and the environment we live in. Nonetheless, this is what we should be striving for.”

Next, Mr. Bertomeu discussed a Euroleague Basketball proposal to unite clubs and domestic leagues behind an ambitious new model for club competitions that honors European basketball’s tradition of promotion and relegation based on sporting results at the same time that it rewards modern management integrity on and off the playing court.

“If a club wants to compete at the highest level, it should do its best to offer the best conditions and fulfill the highest standards,” he said. “And it should be convinced that if it makes this effort, this investment, its future will only depend on its sports success.”

Mr. Bertomeu emphasized that stability and a clear path for ambitious, well-managed clubs to reach the elite will spur growth and make European competitions more attractive to both new and existing fans.

“The clubs and the leagues need stability,” he said. “Stability gives the opportunity to the leagues and the clubs to develop medium- and long-term projects. Stability gives the opportunity to attract investments.”The best of our situation is that we depend only on ourselves. This is an ambitious programme, and we would like all the stakeholders to participate in it.”

The convention continued with a panel discussion including  Mr. Francini of IMG and Mr. Agnelli of Juventus FC, who along with Mr. Pommer took questions from both the attendees and fans following on Twitter.

Mr. Agnelli drew a link between financial stability gained by investing off the playing field and the improvement of results on it. He cited his club’s new, smaller stadium that nonetheless brings in more revenues than the previous, bigger one and is integrated into a campus offering more than just football entertainment to the fans. “We are creating a Juventus ‘neighbourhood’, which includes the stadium, the museum and we are planning to move there both the training centre and the headquarters. Juventus is also attracting investments from third parties in this new real estate and leisure area of Torino, “Mr. Agnelli said. “We all know how much giving players a great atmosphere helps them perform better and gives the fans a great show.”

Mr. Francini of IMG focused on the passion that defines the unique relationship between clubs and fans and sits at the heart of the business of sports.
“There’s a deal to be done between the club and its fans,” he said. “It’s a deal that is on-site experience and also a community deal, an engagement deal. You want to enable fans and supporters to experience the very best during the hours they are with you.”

Australian Turf Club Appoints New Chairman & Vice-Chairman

The board of the Australian Turf Club has announced Michael Crismale as its new chairman and announced Laurie Macri as vice-chairman.

Crismale said he was honoured to be taking over as chairman of the ATC as Sydney racing entered one of its most exciting periods in many years and was in full preparation for the 2014 autumn carnival.

Qatar 2022 Appoint Consultancy Firm CH2M HILL to Insure Successful World Cup

The first FIFA World Cup to be held in the Middle East is one step closer to becoming reality as the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee today appointed CH2M HILL a global full-service consulting, allergy  programme management, cheap design, construction, and operations firm to ensure the successful delivery of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.

Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee has direct responsibility for building competitionvenues which includes the proposed stadiums and training sites while maintaining a coordination role for non-competition venues required by FIFA, in addition to major infrastructure works such as the New Doha International Airport and the proposednationwide metro network.

The multi-phased, rigorous procurement process took over six months to complete.  After a pre-qualification process, six multi-national firms were invited to submit bids.  Multiple global and local consultants and legal firms assisted the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee to ensure a fully transparent and well managed procurement process.

Swansea’s Liberty Stadium Continues to Make Losses

English Premier League newcomers Swansea FC’s Liberty Stadium is continuing to make losses, leading to an estimated deficit of over half a million pounds.

The draft figures contained in a Swansea council report show a projected loss of £118,000 ($186,300) for 2010/11.

The stadium, run by Swansea Stadium Management Company (SSMC), is the home of Swansea City and the Ospreys.

The Swans and the Ospreys moved to the £27 million ($42.6m) Liberty Stadium in 2005 after the council paid most of the money to build it.

The figures will be discussed by the council on Thursday, along with facilities such as the national pool.

A report to the council cabinet said the projected loss of £118,000 ($186,300) meant the stadium now had a cumulative loss of about £533,000 ($801,507).

“Under the joint venture signed by the parties, responsibility for guaranteeing all losses rests with the clubs,” it said.

Former England Rugby Captain to Enter Race to Become Chairman of IRB

Former England Rugby captain Bill Beaumont has announced he will stand against France’s Bernard Lapasset for chairman of the International Rugby Board (IRB).

Beaumont, 59, is one of England’s best known ever players who has been vice-chairman of the IRB since being elected in 2007.

The former lock, who captained the team to the Grand Slam in 1980, was capped 34 times by England and seven times by the British Lions.

Beaumont’s decision to stand against Lapasset, who fronted rugby sevens’ successful campaign to get on to the Olympic programme at Rio de Janeiro in 2016, at the IRB meeting in Auckland on October 19 is a surprise in the light of the current controversy surrounding the Rugby Football Union (RFU).

Beaumont is a member of the RFU Management Board but is trying to distance himself from the controversy surrounding John Steele’s sacking as chief executive and the subsequent fall-out.

Beaumont said: “I am putting myself forward as Bill Beaumont the individual. I’m keeping out of all the RFU trouble. The people around the IRB table know who I am and what I stand for.”

Beaumont, a member of the IRB Council since 1999, is not planning to lobby against 63-year-old Lapasset, who succeeded Ireland’s Syd Millar as chairman at the election in Paris in 2007.

“What you see is what you get,” he added.

To be elected Beaumont needs the support of the majority of the IRB Council, which has 26 members, nine of whom are from the British Isles.

If he wins, Beaumont will be only be the second Briton to currently be head of an Olympic sport. The only other one at the one is Scotland’s Kate Caithness, who last year was elected as the first-ever female President of the World Curling Federation.
