Stern Claims NBA Labour Talks were ‘Open & Robust’

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and its players’ union will reconvene at a Dallas hotel for a second day of meetings about a new labor contract today, June 8, after league commissioner David Stern claimed that yesterday’s talks were ‘open and robust’.

With three weeks before the existing agreement expires, Stern admitted: “I won’t call it heated, but it was good and frank, open and robust. That’s a good thing.”

Stern and NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver took part in about five hours of discussions between almost all of the NBA’s 11-owner labor relations committee and the nine-player executive committee of the Player’s Association (NBPA).

Billy Hunter, executive director of the NBPA, left yesterday’s session without talking to reporters and union spokesman Dan Wasserman also declined to comment. NBPA executive committee members Roger Mason Jr. and Keyon Dooling said the union would comment after today’s talks.

It’s the second time discussions have taken place during the NBA Finals, which is tied at two games apiece after the Dallas Mavericks beat the Miami Heat 86-83 last night.

The league and the union are arguing over how to divide more than US$4 bn in NBA revenue.

ICC Move Closer to Floodlit Tests for Five-Day Game

In a bid to rejuvenate the dwindling support for the five-day version of the sport, anesthetist the International Cricket Council (ICC) has moved one step closer to giving the go-ahead to floodlit tests.

It is understood that the only stumbling block standing in the way is finding a ball that can be clearly seen under lights, adiposity but can also retain its colour for the minimum 80 overs.

Experiments over the past two years have shown that either pink or orange balls in place of the traditional red can be seen clearly under lights and a pink ball with a black seem will be trialled throughout the world following testing during the Marylebone Cricket Club’s annual season-opening fixture against county champions Nottinghamshire in Abu Dhabi this year.

ICC general manager Dave Richardson said: “This time next year I hope we will be in a position, pills hopefully, to recommend it be used in a day-night test match.

“The principal aim now is just to confirm that the ball in most conditions can sustain itself for long enough.”

If the cricket committee concludes in a year’s time that the pink ball has been a success and can retain its colour in adverse conditions, the path appears clear for a trial day-night test in the ensuing 12 months

Prosecutor: Massa can be jailed if he helps Alonso

A Brazilian prosecutor warned Felipe Massa that he could be arrested and sentenced to up to six years in prison if he takes team orders to help Ferrari teammate Fernando Alonso win the Formula One title.

Massa could be charged with fraud if he allows Alonso to pass him or if he does anything else that would somehow alter the result Sunday at in Interlagos, according to prosecutor Paulo Castilho, known for taking up sports causes in Brazil.

“Massa or any other driver who does anything to fraud the result of the race can be arrested and formally charged,” Castilho told The Associated Press on Thursday. “It doesn’t mean that it will happen, it will be up to the local authority in charge of the event to decide whether the law has been broken.”

The law mentioned by Castilho says that it’s a crime to “fraud by any means, or contribute to fraud, in any way, the result of a sporting event.”

Massa arrived at the Brazilian Grand Prix saying he would give way to his teammate if needed Sunday, just as he did while leading the German GP in July so Alonso could earn more points in the race for the title.

“I would do it again, I’m a professional driver,” Massa said earlier this week.

Sochi Olympics Chief Expects Games to be Secure

The head of the Sochi Olympics is expecting the games to be an operational success despite the talk of terror threats, corruption, overspending and anti-gay legislation that has already plagued the event.

Organising committee chief Dmitry Chernyshenko said on Wednesday that Sochi is “fully ready” and will deliver safe, friendly and well-run games that defy the grim reports that have overshadowed preparations.

“History will be made,” he said of Russia’s first Winter Games.

With Sochi facing threats of terrorist attacks from insurgents from the North Caucasus, Chernyshenko said the city is the “most secure venue at the moment on the planet” and promised that tight security measures will not detract from the atmosphere of the games.

“I can assure you that Sochi will be among the most security-friendly games and all the procedures will be very gentle and smooth,” he said.

Russia is deploying more than 50,000 police and soldiers to guard the Olympics. A Muslim militant group claimed responsibility for back-to-back suicide bombings that killed 34 people in Volgograd in late December and threatened attacks on the games.

“You will see thousands of (security) people around but it’s important to understand that the Olympics is a global event and the security is also a global multi-national event and state authorities are doing (their) utmost to deliver Sochi as safest for everyone,” Chernyshenko said.

Referring to the Russian law banning gay “propaganda” among minors, he repeated assurances that Russia will not discriminate against anyone at the Olympics on the basis of sexual orientation.

However, Chernyshenko appeared to contradict IOC President Thomas Bach, who said Monday that athletes – prohibited by the Olympic Charter from political demonstrations or gestures on the medal stand and other venues – would be free to express their personal political views at news conferences.

“I don’t think they are allowed by charter to express those views that (are) not related to the sport at the press conference room,” Chernyshenko said, adding that organisers had set up a protest zone – or “Speaker’s Corner” – in the city.

The uproar over the gay law, as well as criticism of Russia’s human rights record and Vladimir Putin’s policies, has led a number of Western political leaders to shun the February 7 opening ceremony and the games.

However, Chernyshenko said the number of world leaders attending the ceremony would be “the highest in the history of the Winter Games,” but declined to give the number.

Derbyshire Cricket Look to Revamp County Ground

Derbyshire Cricket’s County Ground is set to undertake a £2.5million redevelopment  as part of a six-point plan set out to promote and strengthen the county.

The club have ambitions to play a part in hosting the 2019 World Cup and the stadium improvements will play a major part in their efforts.

The changes are yet to be granted planning permission but Derbyshire hope work will be completed by 2014.

“The aim of this six-point strategy is to deliver cricketing success supported by long-term business sustainability and financial security,” said chief executive Simon Storey. “It builds on the nine-point cricket strategy announced by chairman Chris Grant in July 2011.

“Our primary objective as an off-the-field team is to engage effectively with sponsors, members, supporters, conference customers and the wider community of Derbyshire. The more effectively we achieve this objective, the greater our position will be to support and sustain a successful team on the field.

“Every successful team in professional sport needs a strong business model to support it. This six-point plan ensures that we now have a similarly robust blueprint to follow off the field and the two strategies will work hand in hand to create a successful future for cricket in Derbyshire.”

The plan focuses on an array of other areas and comes on the back of a 101% membership surge.

RFL Searching for Major Sponsors for Domestic Leagues

Rugby Football League (RFL) have revealed they will most likely start the new season without a major sponsor for either of their domestic league competitions.

The RFL unveiled a two-year, seven-figure sponsorship deal with Tetley’s for the Challenge Cup on Tuesday but has yet to conclude agreements for both Super League and the Championship.

The Co-operative ended their backing of the Championship at the end of 2012 while Super League clubs voted to pull the plug on the controversial “cashless” deal with Stobart after only 12 months.

“There are lots of positive dialogue but we are not going to do any quick deals,” said chief executive Nigel Wood (pictured).

“There are no no-go zones but, if the deals are not right, we won’t accept them. We will hold out for the right deals.

“I am confident that 2013 will deliver far more commercial revenue than has ever been delivered in the past.”
