UEFA to Launch Study Into Dementia Link
February 16, 2017
The governing body of European football has commissioned a research project to examine the links between dementia and football.
Early research recently published suggested repeated heading of the ball may be linked to long-term brain damage.
The Football Association, the governing body of English football, has also indicated a commitment to supporting research into the link between football and degenerative brain disease.
There has been a notable push in recent years towards additional safety measures in sport. The National Football League (NFL) recently announced it would spend $100m on medical and engineering research, having agreed a $1bn settlement to ex-players who suffered brain injuries.
