UEFA Champions League final could be outside of Europe
October 21, 2016
UEFA President Alexander Ceferin has said the Champions League final could be played outside of Europe, mentioning New York as an option.
Ceferin stated that the governing body will open up a bidding process to continents other than Europe as well. Previously, there has been no tendering process for hosting rights of the Champions League with the leadership deciding amongst themselves.
“It might be an idea in the future but we have to speak about it,” said the new UEFA president.
“To go from Portugal to Azerbaijan, for example, is almost the same or the same as if you go to New York. For the fans it’s no problem but we should see. It’s a European competition so let’s think about it,” he added.
He highlighted that there would be a lot to think about in terms of kick-off times, days and considering national leagues.
