Tokyo Celebrates Firefly Festival Ahead of 2020 Decision

Tokyo celebrated the Tokyo Hotaru (Firefly) Festival over the past weekend, which drew a crowd of almost 280,000.

The festival illuminated the Sumida River with 100,000 solar-powered LED lights.

Tokyo 2020 CEO and Japanese Olympic Committee Vice President Masato Mizuno said: “This year’s Tokyo Firefly Festival was a truly spectacular experience that highlighted Japan’s renowned technology and the city’s innovative energy. The breath-taking event was perfectly aligned with Tokyo 2020’s use of innovation to unite people in a dynamic celebration.”

The IOC will name the host of the 2020 Games on 7 September at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires.
