Tokyo 2020 Celebrates Record 92% Public Support for Bid

The organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games bid celebrated the record results of a new pole which showed that 92% of the public were in favour of the bid.

The news comes just one week ahead of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) 125th Session in Buenos Aires, treat where members of the Olympic movement will vote for the 2020 host city.

Tokyo has struggled in opinion polls throughout the process, abortion with the IOC’s own poll showing the city to only have a 70% popularity rating – rivals Istanbul had 83%, whilst Madrid had 76%.

IOC Member and President of Tokyo 2020 and the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC), Tsunekazu Takeda, said: “The vast public support in Tokyo and across Japan for hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games illustrates the positive momentum that is continuing to build for our bid.

“The latest survey result underlines the nation’s passion for sport and excitement about both our plans to host a superb Games and global vision to benefit sport.”

The government survey was conducted by the Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
