A new survey has reported that 1.5 million people in Azerbaijan are interested in buying tickets for the inaugural European Games in Baku next year.

An independent survey also reported that six out of 10 people in the country believe Baku 2015 will play a strong role in establishing Azerbaijan on the world stage.

Sixty two percent of people who completed the survey believed that Baku 2015 will act as more than just a sporting event and will be a good investment to the country’s future development.

Simon Clegg, Chief Operating Officer of Baku 2015 said: “These results show that the majority of Azerbaijan’s population recognise just how important next year’s European Games are.

“Public support is crucial to the success of the event and it is vital for Azerbaijan that we deliver a European Games of which the whole country can be proud.”

A strong 81% of people believed the event would be delivered to a high level, whilst 67% of the population said they would watch the event on TV.

Another question revealed that 50% have followed news around the event in the build-up to the Games starting next year.

“We conducted a survey before the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest and found that there is a very similar level of public support for both events,” said Rizvan Abbasov, director of Rey Monitoring Center

“As was the case with Eurovision, I would expect to see increasing levels of public support for the European Games as we draw nearer to the event.”
