Suresh Kalmadi Will Not Resign As IOA President

January 20, 2012

IOA (Indian Olympic Association) president Suresh Kalmadi will not resign from his post after being released on bail yesterday after nine months in jail.

Kalmadi has, however, asked acting president Vijay Kumar Malhotra to continue his work whilst the IOA president is engaged in a long legal battle to clear his name.

Kalmadi stated, “I will not be able to represent the IOA. I will not be taking part in IOA activities for a long time”.

IOA vice-president Tarlochan Singh explained the situations as follows, “Kalmadi’s legal battle and his parliamentary commitments will keep him away from the IOA for some time. So, Kalmadi requested Malhotra to continue as the acting president.

“Kalmadi is still the IOA president. There has been no motion against him and he will continue as the IOA president. Malhotra will just work as acting president, as he has been doing, since his (Kalmadi’s) arrest.”

Kalmadi, chief of the New Delhi Commonwealth Games organising committee, was arrested last April for an alleged scam in the Timing, Scoring and Result system contract related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
