Sochi 2014 Gay Rights Protestors Hit Out at Coca-Cola Sponsorship

August 29, 2013

Gay rights protestors have turned against Coca-Cola for their continued sponsorship of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Protestors poured bottles of Coke down drains in Times Square, New York and said that Coca-Cola ‘supports hate’ by continuing to sponsor the Games in light of Russia’s anti-gay propaganda law.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has come under increased pressure to strip Russia of the event, following President Vladimir Putin rubber stamping the anti-gay law.

President of the USA Barack Obama and comedian Stephen Fry have been amongst the high-profile people to publicly slam the law.

Bill Dobbs from the gay rights organisation Queer Nation, said: “We’re here today to send a loud message: drop those games and stop supporting hate.”

Russian officials say the law does not penalise gay orientation or activity and that everyone is welcome to Sochi 2014 regardless of their sexuality.
