Rival Broadcasters Partner to Secure Canada Rights for 2014 and 2016 Games

September 12, 2011

Canadian broadcasters Bell Media and the CBC have announced they have made a joint bid for the domestic rights of the 2014 Winter and 2016 Olympic Games.

The partnership follows Bell Media parting ways with rival Rogers Media as part of the Canadian Olympic Broadcast Consortium that broadcast the 2010 Winter Olympics from Vancouver.

Bell Media and Rogers will still broadcast the upcoming 2012 London Games to Canadians.

Before then, doctor Bell Media and the CBC, Canada’s public broadcaster, will submit a bid to the IOC to deliver nationwide coverage of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Kevin Crull, Bell Media president, said: “The Olympic Games are a premium property that requires a strong partnership in order to deliver the level of experience that Canadian viewers and advertising partners now expect.”

Rogers exiting the bidding process for the 2014 and 2016 Games is opportune for the CBC, which was defeated in its bid to air the Vancouver and London Olympics.

The IOC will take bids from Canadian broadcasters in late 2011 before awarding the rights package.
