Rio Mayor slams city security ahead of Olympic Games

July 5, 2016

The Mayor of Rio has criticised policing in the city with just a month to go until the 2016 Olympic Games.

Eduardo Paes has called the issue “the most serious in Rio” saying that the “state is doing a terrible job.”

Paes’ statement comes just weeks after the Brazilian capital received a R$2.9bn ($838.6m) funding package due to financial issues.

He told CNN: “It’s completely failing at its work of policing and taking care of people.”

Recently striking police officers held up a sign at the city’s airport which said “Welcome to hell”

While Last week, authorities revealed parts of a mutilated body were discovered washed up on the sands of Copacabana beach, just meters from where beach volleyball athletes will compete.
