Rio 2016 Organising Committee Moves to New Sustainable Headquarters

March 11, 2013

The Rio 2016 Organising Committee has moved headquarters to a new sustainable building based in Cidade Nova.

The new headquarters occupy an area of 20.938m2 and will house the Rio 2016 and Municipal Olympic Company’s Teams until the Games are finished.

The new building has rainwater harvesting and energy saving systems inclding low energy LED lighting, solar panels and air conditing equipped with electromagnetic components.

The building was also designed with accessibility in mind – there are ramps and elevators meeting all necessary requirements, in addition to Braille signposting and tactile flooring.

Carlos Arthur Nuzman, President of the Organising Committee for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, said: “Seeing the first Games venue ready reinforces our ability to achieve. Furthermore, having all teams gathered in a single building, together with the Municipal Olympic Company, makes our task easier and helps to integrate the teams.”

Nuzman also emphasised the new location’s sustainability: “Modernity and sustainability mark the new headquarters. The modular construction is an innovation that better suits our project. We will use the building according to the Committee’s growth demands and, in the end, it will be possible to dismantle the structure, to reuse it elsewhere”.

An Integrated Security Plan will be put in place to protect the first completed Rio 2016 venue. The Plan will see a presence on site from the Fire Department, Municipal Guard and Civil and Military Police.
