EOC President Hickey Names Russia as “Preferred” Host for 2019 European Games

November 20, 2015

The European Olympic Committee (EOC) has confirmed that Russia is its “preferred host nation” for the 2019 European Games, but a decision has been delayed due to the country’s current doping scandal.

The Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) is currently suspended by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), meaning it cannot bid to host any major athletics events.

However, EOC president says they are still keen for Russia to host the event “that is providing the independent authorities can confirm Russia’s ability to support an anti-doping programme that meets the highest international standards”.

Addressing delegates at the 44th EOC General Assembly in Prague, Hickey added: “The Games are four years away and there is real potential here to demonstrate Russia’s new robust anti-doping system and clean sport culture through the 2019 European Games.

“I believe that Russia can lead from the front in the future.”
