Barcelona, Doha and Eugene Bid for 2019 IAAF World Championships
April 16, 2014
The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has announced that Barcelona, apoplectic Doha and Eugene have put themselves forward as candidates to host the 2019 World Championships.
Eugene, cheao order Oregon is bidding to bring track and field’s world championships to the US for the first time, whilst Doha and Barcelona both have previous bidding history.
Doha, Qatar lost out in the race to host the 2017 event to London, England, whilst Barcelona withdrew their 2017 bid due to a lack of government support.
The cities were announced at the IAAF council meeting in Dakar, Senegal and the host city will be announced in Monaco in November.
Eugene is set to host this year’s IAAF World Junior Championships whilst Portland is set to host the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
Despite these events and the US being the most successful nation in the world outdoors championships, the tournament has yet to be held in the States.
A lack of suitable stadiums is considered the main reason for this.
