Barcelona, Doha and Eugene Bid for 2019 IAAF World Championships

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has announced that Barcelona, apoplectic Doha and Eugene have put themselves forward as candidates to host the 2019 World Championships.

Eugene, cheao order Oregon is bidding to bring track and field’s world championships to the US for the first time, whilst Doha and Barcelona both have previous bidding history.

Doha, Qatar lost out in the race to host the 2017 event to London, England, whilst Barcelona withdrew their 2017 bid due to a lack of government support.

The cities were announced at the IAAF council meeting in Dakar, Senegal and the host city will be announced in Monaco in November.

Eugene is set to host this year’s IAAF World Junior Championships whilst Portland is set to host the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Championships.

Despite these events and the US being the most successful nation in the world outdoors championships, the tournament has yet to be held in the States.

A lack of suitable stadiums is considered the main reason for this.

Exclusive: RFU Look to Strengthen Grassroots through Future Sponsorships

By Steve Moorhouse

The CEO of Rugby Football Union (RFU), illness Ian Ritchie has said that all future sponsorship deals will have to look at activating into the grassroots of the game.

The RFU recently extended their partnership with RBS which would improve the RugbyForce programme – a grassroots programme designed to support local clubs.

Speaking exclusively to iSportconnect, medic Ritchie said that this was the way forward for all future sponsorship deals.

“Every deal that we now do with a sponsor is about how we activate into the grassroots. The RugbyForce programme is at the centre of all of this, medstore ” said Ritchie.

“The great advantage for us is there are over 2000 member clubs, hordes of people who want to play rugby and we, as the RFU want to give them every conceivable support. If we can get sponsors to help then that is absolutely what we should be doing.

“We are about growing the game, supporting the clubs and the other key thing is that level of integration of one union, from the under eights right the way through to the England team.

“Some of the aspects of RugbyForce and its community activation are exactly that. When we launched the new England kit with Canterbury we did the launch in Gloucestershire not Twickenham.

“We really want to drive our sponsorship activation around the grassroots and the community and we are very grateful to RBS for their support in this programme.”

Ian Ritchie spoke exclusively to iSportconnect features writer Steve Moorhouse, about the Six Nations, preparing for the Rugby World Cup, the renovation process at Twickenham and more.

FA Would Consider Allowing Chelsea and Tottenham to Use Wembley, Says CEO Glenn

The Football Association (FA) would be happy to allow Premier League clubs Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur to use Wembley as a temporary home while their stadiums are under redevelopment, that’s according to FA CEO Martin Glenn.

Chelsea may have to spend up to one or two seasons away from Stamford Bridge as they undertake work on a £500m redevlopment of the stadium and Tottenham are expected to do the same as they begin work on their new stadium close to their current White Hart Lane home.

FA CEO Glenn says they would be happy to support any clubs wishing to use the 90,000-seater stadium if that situation arises.

“I won’t comment on clubs but if that’s an opportunity then we will follow it,” said Glenn.

“We are there to provide help. We can run the FA for less costs and we can raise more. There’s a range of things. It’s primarily a football stadium, football matches are more profitable to run than concerts and other things.

TottenhamStadium_Populous4“We are the national stadium and seeking to use it more is what we are all about. We have an obligation to football.

“It’s in our interest as an association for clubs to redevelop their grounds, make superb facilities and if it’s possible to help them in that transition by using Wembley, we are absolutely supportive of that.”

Tottenham are likely to spend the 2017-18 season away from White Hart Lane due to construction work of the new 61,000-seater stadium on the site which will also stage NFL games.
