D.C. United and District of Columbia Reach Initial Deal on New Stadium

D.C. United executives and city officials have reached a preliminary $300m agreement to construct a 20, drugs 000-seat stadium for the Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise on Buzzard Point in the southwest of the city, anabolics ending a 10-year hunt for a new venue.

D.C. United has struggled financially in recent years. The previously successful franchise has also become the holder of the worst record in MLS. Although season tickets are up 30 percent from last year, site when the team made the playoffs, United is averaging 13,645 fans through 10 home dates this year (down from 16,977 in the regular season over its first 17 seasons). Jason Levien, managing partner of the team, said D.C. United would not achieve firm financial grounding until it left its current home at RFK.

“Not only is it 50 years old, but you’re so far away from the viewing experience,” he said.

The move comes after both the city’s mayor, Vincent C. Gray, and city administrator, Allen Y. Lew, assisted the team with providing a solution. “It’s amazing how quickly they have been able to get this done,” said Levien.

“This is an exciting plan that moves the District forward in two areas about which I’m passionate — economic development, particularly in the East End of the District, and sports,” said Mayor Gray.  “The new soccer stadium is the final piece in the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative puzzle that, when complete will create the most vibrant and sustainable sports-and-retail district in America.”

Provided that the D.C. Council approves of final aspects of the plan, the MLS franchise would be granted a 25-35 year lease for land where the District of Columbia and D.C. United would split costs for the project. Additionally a sales and use tax abatement of up to $2.6m in the deal’s first deal is expected to be provided by city government.

Washington, D.C., is expected to provide $150m to assemble land and prepare the site for the stadium’s construction with a similar amount of money being spent by the team to build a 20,000 or 25,000 seat stadium.

Scotland Chosen as Hosts for 2017 Badminton World Championships

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has confirmed that the 2017 World Championships will take place in Glasgow, Scotland.

Scotland was awarded the championships at the BWF Council meeting in the Peruvian capital of Lima and Glasgow’s Emirates Arena has been chosen as the venue.

Anne Smillie, Chief Executive of BADMINTONscotland, said “The return of the World Championships to Scotland is a major coup for BADMINTONscotland and our partners, Glasgow City Council and EventScotland.

“We had put together a superb bid for the Sudirman Cup and our presentation was extremely well received, even though we narrowly lost out to Australia.

“There is little doubt that the quality of our bid played a significant part in the decision to award these Championships to us.

“There is a very pleasing symmetry to this announcement, when one recalls that we staged both the Sudirman Cup and the Individual Championships in 1997 and the Sudirman Cup again in 2007.

“Having the Individual Championships in 2017 will complete another ten year cycle of bringing the most prestigious badminton events to Scotland.

“The BWF is well aware of the strength of our partnership with Glasgow City Council and with EventScotland and they know from our track record that we will provide a world class setting and world class organisation for the world’s top players.

“Securing this event will also provide a huge incentive for our fantastic volunteer team, many of whom were involved in this summer’s Commonwealth Games and will be on duty again next week at the Emirates Arena for the Scottish Open Grand Prix.”

BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer said: “It was obvious how much work and thought was invested in the bid which BADMINTONscotland and Glasgow submitted.

“We were stunned at some of their innovative thinking and the Council felt that, as we still had an option to award the World Championships, we would approach BADMINTONscotland and determine if they would be interested in hosting the World Championships in 2017.”

CAF and Moroccan Government to Meet Over Staging of 2015 African Cup of Nations

A meeting between the Moroccan Government and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will be held today with an imminent decision expected on whether the 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be postponed due to concerns of hosts Morocco over the Ebola epidemic.

CAF representatives, order led by President Issa Hayatou met Moroccan officials last week in Cameroon before holding a further meeting in the Algerian Capital Algiers yesterday.

A final meeting will take place this morning in the Moroccan capital Rabat, clinic with Hayatou expected to make the final decision and whether the tournament will go ahead as planned.

The 16-team tournament is scheduled to take place from January 17 – 8 February and the Moroccan Government has demanded the tournament be delayed until June over fears that fans from West Africa, the region worst affected by the Ebola virus, may travel to the nation.

Moroccan Government officials believe that if FIFA can consider switching the date for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, then CAF should have no problems postponing the Nations Cup.

CAF are against the idea of postponing the date of the tournament and believe it will be impossible to return to the traditional January and February dates if the AFCON is moved to June.

An alternative option would be for CAF to find another host for the finals, but the search as yet hasn’t proved fruitful

South Africa are considered as the nation best equipped to take the finals on at such short notice, having hosted the 2010 World Cup, but the country has refused to consider helping Hayatou with the matter.

Algeria, Egypt and Sudan are other African countries who have refused to help, while Nigeria and Ghana are undecided but seem reluctant.

However, CAF face the risk of being sued by the Moroccan Government if they find an alternative host, over finances spent on upgrading stadia and support facilities.

This Moroccan stance was set out by Minister of Youth and Sports Mohamed Ouzzine.

Morocco are also due to stage the FIFA Club World Cup in December, but this will only feature six visiting teams and is unlikely to attract fans from other African nations.

“Morocco has a firm will to welcome the next edition of the Nations Cup,” said Ouzzine.

Ouzzine also confirmed that various alternative dates had been proposed in the hope that later in 2015, the Ebola crisis will have eased.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the virus has claimed 5,000 lives, almost all in West African countries such as Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

“Our demand for a postponement is motivated by the latest WHO report, which contains alarming numbers regarding the extent and spread of the virus,” Ouzzine added.

“Morocco faces a historical responsibility as there has never been such a deadly Ebola epidemic.

“We expect around 300,000 fans for the Nations Cup and we are not equipped for the essential health checks.

“I cannot see any other countries being equipped for so many fans either.”
