PSG Given Approval for Parc des Princes Plans

The mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, has given Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) permission for a major renovation of their home stadium, Parc des Princes, after Euro 2016.

Delanoe signed a letter addressed to PSG President Nasser Al Khelaifi that stated his approval for the stadium to be renovated. The stadium is owned by the city of Paris.  PSG’s owners, Qatar Sports Investment (QSI), are reported to be unhappy with the 45,000 capacity and want a larger arena to match their ambitions for the club.

Last year, Al Khelaifi told Le Parisien: “Our will is to stay here. The first option is to demolish and then rebuild the Parc on the same site to make it a 60,000-capacity venue. It’s a very ambitious project.”

The stadium will host fixtures at Euro 2016 and the French national team will play there against Australia today. It will be the first France match to take place in the stadium for four years.

The approval from the Mayor does not necessarily mean that the renovation will go ahead however. The stadium is surrounded by residential buildings and an inner-city ring road runs directly underneath it. The mayor will also step down from his position next March and his successor would not be legally bound by his signed letter.

Adidas to pay €70m for new Germany kit deal

Adidas are set to renew their partnership with the German national team for €70m per year.

Sport Bild have reported that the world champions will wear Adidas kit through to 2022.

The current deal is worth only a third of the price, at around €25m – but it was signed before Germany became world champions in 2014.

It means the German national side will have the biggest kit deal of any national football team.

The value of the deal would dwarf Nike’s deal with France – which is €43m a year, signed in 2011, and runs to 2018.

It’s unsurprising that Adidas paid out to continue the partnership. Adidas have already sold 1.3 million shirts Germany shirts in 2016.

The brand also have a long association with the team, first appearing on Die Mannschaft’s shirt in 1954.

It still comes some way short of the most lucrative kit deal in football, Nike pay €155m a year to appear on Barcelona’s shirt.

UK Sponsorship Awards 2016: Entries Up 20%+ – Still Time To Enter Various Categories

2016 will be a record year for The UK Sponsorship Awards. Entries are up 20% and counting on last year. Strong support in categories such as Sport, herbal Brand, no rx TV, Digital, International and Arts were highlights of this year’s entry pool. And there was also keen interest in the new Celebrity Endorsement category.

Commenting, UKSA organiser Rosemary Sarginson said: “I’m delighted to say that the sponsorship industry continues to put its support behind the UK Sponsorship Awards, now in their 22nd year.

Despite the tough trading environment we all operate in, or maybe because of it, the sector is showing its resilience, creativity and innovation. Sport and digital, in particular, continue to power ahead. And the range of international entries has never been stronger.”

While the overall picture is buoyant, the new Empowering Women Through Sport category looks like it might take time to catch on, said Sarginson: “So we have decided to extend the deadline on this category until Friday the 29th of January.

Anyone who works in UK sponsorship knows that this business has a good track record on gender equality. Sponsorship of women’s sport is an effective and increasingly popular medium so we want to reflect that fact in our Awards event.” Contact us for more detail –info@sponsorship-awards.co.uk.
