Valencia have announced that the designs for their Nuevo Mestalla stadium have been scaled down.
Despite the news, ambulance the La Liga football club have moved to reassure fans that the stadium will still be one of the leading venues in the world.
Originally, ed the stadium was set to hold 75,000 fans and be ready for the 2009-10 season. Now the stadium will hold 65,000 and will cost €200m.
Mark Fenwick, of project architects RFA, said: “€98 million has been spent on the project up to now, and the initial budget for completion was an additional €160 million. Following these months of work together, we have managed to reduce this cost by €60 million, requiring a further €90 million to complete the project.”
Valencia had to stop the original construction in 2008 due to the club’s strained finances.
The club has struggled financially for a number of years and have had to sell key players such as David Silva, David Villa and Juan Mata in recent seasons.
