Glasgow 2014 Unveil New Look Hampden Park Stadium

Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games organisers have unveiled the new look of Hampden Park, story Scotland’s National Stadium.

Hampden Park will be the centrepiece for the Games and has been transformed to host 48 athletics events at the event that takes place from 23 July to 3 August.

Diggers were used to remove the stadium’s turf and steel stilts were put down to raise the surface to create the required dimensions set out by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

The stadium will host 44,000 people during the Games before returning to 52,000 for football games after the tournament.

Olympic gold medallist and Glasgow 2014 Official Ambassador, Jessica Ennis-Hill was on hand for the revealing of the stadium and she said: “Looking at the amazing Athletics arena that is taking shape at Hampden Park, I am sure Glasgow 2014 will be a Commonwealth Games like no other. I know from the Olympic Games in London the importance of a home crowd and how much of a boost that wonderful support gave to the athletes.

“Scotland is famed for a passion for sport. I’ve been hearing today about the ‘Hampden Roar’ which I’m sure, combined with a fantastic looking standard of Athletes’ Village, will give those competing at Glasgow 2014 an experience they will never forget.”

David Grevemberg, Chief Executive of Glasgow 2014, added: “Both of these crucial Games venues are stunning in look, revolutionary in design and the embodiment of the athlete centred, sports focused approach that we’ve taken to delivering the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“The solution we’re implementing to transform Scotland’s National Stadium is a world-first on such a scale and a fantastic model for future events, while the Athletes’ Village was designed with the needs of sportsmen and women at its heart. It will provide a great home-from-home Games community in four months’ time.”

The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will feature 17 sports in 11 days with 261 medals events on show.

Indian Grand Prix Organisers Insist Race Will Return

The organisers of the Indian Grand Prix, Jaypee Sports International, insist that the event will return after a one-year hiatus in 2014.

The race, held at the Buddh International Circuit, is only three races into a five race deal with FOM. There will be no Indian Grand Prix in 2014 due to the pressures involved with hostng the race twice in six months, which would have been required due to a change in the race’s slot on the calendar.

F1 leader Bernie Ecclestone has cited political and financial difficulties as causes for the break, and there have been low sales figures for this year’s race, which has led to speculation that the Indian Grand Prix may be removed from F1, though Jaypee insist this is not the case.

A media officer told Gulf News: “We were always confident of good crowd numbers. F1 is new to the country and it will take time for fans to warm up to it. We are close to the average attendances worldwide on race days, except perhaps in Silverstone, which attracts a bigger crowd. We will definitely host the race again in 2015.”

BCCI Unaware of Pune Warriors IPL Withdrawal as Tensions Mount with Sahara

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has said they are unaware of Pune Warrior’s decision to pull-out from the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The Board claims that they have had ‘no direct communication’ with Sahara Adventure Sports Limited, denture who said they would pull the Warriors on Tuesday.

A statement from Sahara at the time read: “We will not keep the IPL franchise even if the entire franchisee fee is waved off. It is the firm and final decision of Sahara to withdraw from IPL.

“In 2010, Sahara had bid 1700 crore for an IPL franchise on the basis of revenue calculated for 94 matches. It was tricky on the part of BCCI to put the number as 94 matches in the media to get a bigger amount, but we got 64 matches only.”

The BCCI claimed to have encashed ‘a part’ of the bank guarantee of the franchise because Sahara defaulted on payments.

Now the BCCI say they have heard nothing from Sahara in regards to puling the Pune Warriors out of the IPL.

“The BCCI has read in media reports that Sahara has purported to terminate its franchise agreement and to pull out,” a statement from BCCI secretary read.

No direct communication

“The BCCI has had no direct communication from its franchisee in this regard. The BCCI can however confirm that in order to satisfy the balance of the 2013 franchise fee of Rs 120 crore, which was overdue and owing to BCCI since 3 April 2013, it has encashed part of the bank guarantee.

“While it is true that the arbitration has not progressed, the BCCI cannot be held responsible since every one of the eminent retired judges suggested by the BCCI was not found acceptable by the franchisee.

“In order to break this impasse, a letter was sent (to Sahara) proposing that as the claimant to the arbitration, it should approach the court to appoint an arbitrator so that the process could move forward. Again, there was no response.”

Sahara disputed this claim and said that the BCCI had turned down their requests to talk.

A statement read: “Sahara has been continuously requesting revision of the franchise fee.

“In the joint statement given on Feb 16, 2012, BCCI had stated that (they… along with Sahara) agree to start the arbitration proceedings….subsequently on various occasions Sahara had suggested names of retired judges as arbitrators, each of which were rejected by BCCI.

“The bank guarantee lapsed on May 2 and nobody from BCCI went for encashment. However, after our last match (May 19), BCCI representatives went to the bank the next day. Had the BCCI moved on May 2…it would have jeopardised the event.”

FIFA Ethics Committee Slaps 90-day Ban on Former Exco Member Makudi

By Christian Radnedge

The list of suspended officials from football continued to grow this week as it was announced by FIFA’s ethics committee that Thai FA president Worawi Makudi has been banned for 90 days.

The former executive committee member joins Sepp Blatter, Jerome Valcke and Michel Platini on the suspension list.

Makudi (pictured) spent 18 years as an Asian delegate to the executive committee of the world federation until being voted off earlier this year.

A statement from the ethics committee did not specify the reason for an investigation, but did say that the decision was taken due to an apparent “breach of the Code of Ethics”.

It’s believed that the allegations refer to Makudi’s role in the controversial award of the hosting rights to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in December 2010.

Makudi was involved in the vote, and was later accused by former England 2018 bid chairman Lord David Triesman of having demanded television rights to a friendly between England and Thailand in return for his vote.

FIFA’s ethics committee said on Monday: “The adjudicatory chamber of the Ethics Committee, chaired by Hans-Joachim Eckert, has suspended Worawi Makudi, the President of The Football Association of Thailand and a former member of the FIFA Executive Committee, from all football activities at national and international level for 90 days. The ban is effective immediately.

“The decision was taken pursuant to the FIFA Code of Ethics art. 83 par. 1, on the grounds that a breach of the Code of Ethics appears to have been committed and a decision on the main issue may not be taken early enough.

“This decision against Worawi Makudi followed a request from the chairman of the investigatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee, Dr Cornel Borbély. The case is now the subject of formal investigation proceedings.”
