The ANOC General Assembly has selected San Diego as the host city of the inaugural 2017 ANOC World Beach Games.

The American city beat off competition from several cities but has secured the right to the Games after unanimous approval by ANOC.

ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said: “This is an historic moment for ANOC and the NOC family. The ANOC World Beach Games has been a key priority for ANOC for nearly two years and today we took a step closer to making our vision a reality.

“We were very impressed by the plan that San Diego put forward. We have worked closely with industry experts to devise an innovative concept which will blend sport, impotent culture and entertainment and we believe that San Diego is the perfect city to deliver our vision.”

Blatter Claims Russia Were Awarded 2018 World Cup Before Votes & Blames Platini for FIFA Crisis

Suspended FIFA president Sepp Blatter has admitted that an agreement was in place for Russia to be awarded the 2018 World Cup, even before the votes were cast.

In an interview with Russian news agency Tass, the Swiss appeared to hold nothing back and also launched a scathing attack on suspended UEFA president Michel Platini.

Blatter blames Michel Platini for the current FIFA crisis by switching his 2022 World Cup vote from the United States to Qatar.

Speaking to Tass, Blatter said: “It was agreed that we go to Russia because it’s never been in Russia, eastern Europe, and for 2022 we go back to America – and so we would have the World Cup in the two biggest political powers.

“Everything was good until the moment when [French President Nicolas] Sarkozy had a meeting with the crown prince of Qatar, who is now the ruler of Qatar [Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani].

“At a lunch afterwards with Mr Platini he said it would be good to go to Qatar. And this has changed everything. There was an election by secret ballot. Four votes from Europe went away from the US and so the result was 14 to eight.

“If you change the four votes, it would have been 12 to 10 for the US. If the USA had been awarded the World Cup, we would . . . not be speaking about any problems at FIFA.”

Looking back Blatter conceded he had been wrong not to stand down as FIFA president after the 2014 World Cup.

He believed that UEFA had long been infected by an “anti-FIFA virus.” He had wanted to stay on to protect the other confederations.

But he had no hesitation in blaming Platini for launching an initial attack on him which subsequently escalated.

“At the beginning,” said Blatter, “it was only a personal attack. It was Platini against me. But then it became political. It was no longer Platini against me but also those who lost the World Cup [vote].

Blatter and Platini are currently serving 90-day suspensions, handed to them by the FIFA Ethics Committee. The new FIFA president will be elected on 26 February.

SPECIAL REPORT: The Evolution of Marketing and the Rise of Race of Champions

In today’s hyper-connected world it’s getting harder to remember what it was like to be alive in the late Eighties.

No internet, online no social media – and the only mobile phones about were only marginally smaller than the phone boxes they would come to replace.

The world of marketing has undergone a complete overhaul since then – with the rise of technology largely dictating the pace.

One event perfectly placed to document the progress is the Race Of Champions (ROC), medicine an annual end-of-season motor sport contest first held in Paris in 1988.

It has come a long way since, visiting venues as diverse as Beijing, Barbados and Bangkok with over 25 successful events.

Next up it’s heading to London’s former Olympic Stadium on November 20-21, bringing a field of driving royalty such as four-time F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel, double MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo, ‘Mr Le Mans’ Tom Kristensen and many more.

RaceOfChampions2

Unlike mobile phones, ROC started out much smaller.

Originally the brainchild of IMP (International Media Productions) President Fredrik Johnsson and the most successful ever female rally driver of all time Michèle Mouton, the first Race Of Champions was created to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first World Rally Drivers Championship, pitting the sport’s greats in identical cars.

This was the end of rallying’s mythical Group B era and competitors included such glorious names as Stig Blomqvist, Ari Vatanen, Walter Röhrl and Hannu Mikkola.

The dangers they faced are shown by the fact that the first ROC was also held in memory of the late Henri Toivonen, who died at the Corsica Rally while leading the world championship in 1986.

It was a different era for marketing too, as ROC president Fredrik Johnsson recalls: “We put up posters all over Paris and distributed them to automobile clubs.

“We networked with journalists to get stories into the major publications like L’Equipe and created media partnerships with France’s main broadcaster TF1 so we’d feature in their programmes.

“But we didn’t get it all right: we printed 10,000 books to celebrate the first ten years of the World Rally Championship as part of some ticket promotion. We’ve still got 5,000 of them in storage…”

RaceOfChampions3

In the Nineties the event established a permanent base in Gran Canaria – and it soon turned heads in other series. By the new Millennium, racers included F1’s Fernando Alonso, American NASCAR legends Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson, two-wheeled specialists such as Valentino Rossi and even stunt stars like X-Games legend Travis Pastrana.

They all came to challenge the rally greats for the ‘Champion of Champions’ title, attracted by a knockout tournament still independently run by Johnsson’s small team.

Suddenly ROC’s Gran Canaria home didn’t seem big enough to hold them all. Then came a change of strategy in 2004, when the event returned to Paris at a unique venue for motor sport: the Stade de France, the stage for football’s World Cup Final six years earlier.

Within such an enclosed environment the sheer spectacle and the noise of the engines reached a new crescendo as seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher battled the man who would go on to become rallying’s greatest: Sébastien Loeb. It’s been onwards and upwards ever since.

“Paris 2004 was a huge step for us,” adds Johnsson. “Being in a big stadium where people were used to coming for football and concerts brought us even closer to the fans, who could see every moment of the action from every seat. We were also one of the first events to start selling tickets online – which is now where we sell most of our tickets.

“Since then our focus has shifted more and more towards digital. Social media is the big game changer, where you can interact with fans all over the world on a continuous basis, and get feedback immediately. Today’s technology lets us understand our target group much better and learn what type of marketing actually delivers instant results in terms of ticket sales.

RaceOfChampions4

“But there’s still room for traditional advertising, even if that has changed too. We still do TV commercials but when it comes to outdoor advertising that is now mostly digital, which opens up new opportunities so we can send out an evolving message.”

An evolving message in an evolving world: ahead of next month’s Race Of Champions in London the digital blitz is ongoing. But you can also keep your eyes out for ads on the capital’s buses and taxis, plus its daily newspapers. Even in a digital world, some old ways do still pay off…

USOC Officially Name Los Angeles as Candidate City to Host 2024 Olympics

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has officially chosen Los Angeles as its candidate city for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti said the city would stage Games that are both ‘spectacular’ and ‘profitable’ after receiving unanimous approval by the city council.

“It is an honor for any city to host the Olympic Games, and Los Angeles is uniquely prepared for this task,” said Garcettit.

“With the unanimous support of our City Council, we are ready to serve and strengthen the Olympic Movement and build a new Olympic legacy.”

“This is a quest that Los Angeles was made for. This city is the world’s greatest stage.”

USOC chief executive Scott Blackmun thanked L.A. for coming forward with a proposal to become the country’s host city after Boston withdrew from the running in July.

“I want to thank Los Angeles for standing up, once again, as America’s bid city,” said Blackmun.

“L.A. has the proven experience in hosting the Games, and knows how to deliver world-class events for athletes and an extraordinary experience for fans.

“Coupled with the city’s culture of creativity and innovation, we are confident L.A. can deliver an outstanding Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024.”

L.A. joins Rome, Paris, Hamburg and Budapest as the candidate cities to host the 2024 Olympics, with the decision to be made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2017.

“The focus needs to be on convincing the 55 or so IOC members that Los Angeles is the best city to host the Olympics. That process starts immediately,” USOC Chairman Larry Probst told reporters in a conference call.

L.A. has already outlined the financial costs, with $4.1 billion to be spent on staging the Games. The proposal also contained projections for revenue, with an estimated $4.8bn from ticket sales, broadcast rights and corporate sponsorships generating a $161m surplus.

Real Madrid Sign Ground-Breaking Partnership With Microsoft

By Keir Radnedge

Santiago Bernabeu was the legendary president who built Real Madrid a stadium vast enough, back in the late 1940s, to welcome all the club’s fans in the city.

Now, 68 years later, the wonders of the technological age have enabled Madrid to extend Bernabeu’s vision to a digital stadium vast enough to welcome all the club’s fans around the world.

Madrid’s ground-breaking partnership with Microsoft was announced last November and the first significant fruit – Realmadridapp – was unveiled to be tasted and tested last night by current president Florentino Perez and senior officials of the football and software giants.

The belief of both Madrid and Microsoft in the significance of the application was illustrated by the presentational presence on stage of all the senior players from Iker Casillas to Cristiano Ronaldo as well as coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Indeed, the app was presented within the Estadio Bernabeu precisely where the current crop of Galacticos were first introduced to their new fans.

Microsoft has built a club-consuming digital platform with an app which will, the M-and-M men believe, provide an engagement with supporters around the world beyond anything attempted by any other sports outfit in any sport.

Madrid were hailed recently by Forbes as the world’s most valuable sports team at $3.263m and have topped the Deloitte club ‘rich list’ of revenue generators for the past 10 years. Revenue last year was $746m.

The financial potential of ‘going digital’ in such an all-consuming manner is of particular importance for Madrid. The club’s domestic television revenues will be frozen for the next three or four years after the agreement by all clubs in La Liga to move to a centralised system of domestic rights sale from 2016.

But the app is about connection first and cash second. The latter is impossible without the former.

Perez explained: “We are taking Santiago Bernabeu’s original vision forward to the ‘Digital Estadio Santiago Bernabeu’ in which supporters will sit next to each other even though they are in different parts of the world.

“We have always been pioneers because in Real Madrid we always want to lead in excellence and be a global reference which is why we are working with an indisputable leading brand like Microsoft.

“The app has been designed so far for fans of football and basketball and can be utilised as a ‘second screen’ plus we can offer, with specific cameras for Realmadridapp, unique images for coverage before and after each game.

“It’s a strategic alliance which will implement a digital transformation of this club to a leading position in a new global scenario. It’s a unique way of contacting fans of Real Madrid scattered in all continents.

“In entering this spectacular virtual stadium [we can] do something which was once considered impossible — reduce the distance between Real Madrid and its supporters from thousands of miles to a single click.”

Madrid view the leap of technological faith as firing the world and outgoing European champions far ahead of clubs which provide only static social media provision through websites, Facebook, Instagram etc, but without the crucial three-dimensional engagement.

Perez’s enthusiasm was matched by that of Orlando Ayala, Microsoft’s chairman (emerging businesses), who extolled the potential of “reaching everyone individually at a global level.”

For Ayala a crucial enabling force was the development of cloud technology which offered the prospect of limitless data storage.

For both men the opportunities provided by the app will, they hope, not only provide fans with a vast new window into the club through its unique content but open the door to a new generation of income-expanding opportunities.

The days of $1bn club revenue may not be so far away, after all.
