Ecclestone Prepared to Say Goodbye to Monza as Attendances Struggle but Drivers Offer Support

Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone has warned that Monza is likely to be struck from the calendar when their contract expires due to poor attendances.

Italy’s Autodromo Nazionale is one of the last remaining iconic venues on the calendar, but Ecclestone says he will say “bye-bye” to Monza after 2016.

Speaking to La Gazzeta dello Sport, Ecclestone said: “Audiences are lower in Italy than anywhere.

“I don’t think we’ll do another contract. The old one was a disaster for us from a commercial point of view.

“After 2016, bye-bye.”

Raikkonen reacts

Ecclestone’s remarks have gone down badly with fans and racers, with many F1 supporters believing his remarks are a negotiating tool ahead of talks.

Kimi Raikkonen has also come out and said it would be “very stupid” to drop Monza.

Raikkonen said: “You hear how they might drop that race and it would be very stupid in my opinion for Formula 1 and for everybody. Hopefully it will never happen.

But we are not the guys who decide those things, and for Ferrari it is an important place.

“Unfortunately I never won there, but hopefully in future we can do. It is a very nice place to go.”

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo added: “I wouldn’t like to see it go. Not only because of my Italian heritage and all the rest of it, but because it’s a circuit that needs to be part of Formula 1.

“It’s been part of it for so long. It’s one of the best weekends in terms of fans, atmosphere, and passion. It’s like Silverstone and Spa, there’s some on the calendar that just need to stay there.

“It’s the history of F1. It can’t really be tampered with I think. I definitely don’t want to see it go. I won’t go into if it does go, what it would make us drivers feel but let’s hope it stays and it’s high speed. It’s good fun.”

“Punta del Este has shown a real commitment to sustainability and we hope by becoming a host Formula E city this will continue to showcase the benefits of electric vehicles.”

FormulaE_PuntadelEste2

Juan Manuel Lopez, the first South American driver to test the Formula E car, said: “It’s a very nice location, next to the sea and the beach. I think the best overtaking places would be in the first chicane after the start/finish straight and in Turn 5 under braking.

“There are many places where the track is not that wide too, so it’s going to be a place where you really need to keep your concentration.

“The surface of the roads is very different in places, meaning there is more grip in certain parts of the track, but the Formula E cars are well prepared for that kind of transition.

“They run very high off the ground and with a bit of work on the set-up it will be ok.”

The Punta del Este ePrix will be the third race in the calendar, after the opening around Beijing’s Olympic Bird’s Nest Stadium and the race through the centre of Putrajaya in Malaysia.

UEFA FFP and Chelsea’s 12-13 Accounts – Daniel Geey

Introduction

Chelsea recently announced a £49.4m loss in their latest 2012-13 accounts. It was of significant interest that the press release stated that:

“A long-term objective was financial sustainability, and the subsequent implementation of Financial Fair Play by Uefa and by the Premier League has brought that to the top of the agenda for football clubs. We are pleased therefore that we will meet the stipulations set down by Uefa in their first assessment period.”

Chelsea explained that they would comply with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Rules (FFPRs) which include only making a €45m loss over the 11-12 and 12-13 seasons. What most analyists presumed was that a big part of the club’s compliance policy was to use the UEFA FFPR Annex XI relief.

The aim of this blog is to illustrate how Chelsea are unlikely to be able to remove the costs of player contracts entered into before June 2010 because the club’s trend is actually getting worse. This is due to the club making a profit in 2011-12 (£1.4m) but a loss in 2012-13. Such deductions would have certainly lead to a much smaller loss for FFPR compliance purposes.

The Basics

For a summary of the FFPR basics click here. The FFPRs will start to bite from the 2013-14 season. The rules need to be borne in mind, however, from the 2011-12 season onwards because the 2011-12 and 2012-13 accounts will be used to determine a club’s license application in the 2013-14 season. As such Chelsea’s 2012-12 accounts (after the FFPR calculations have been made) will form one of the two accounting periods, for the first monitoring period, that UEFA will use to assess compliance.

The Annex XI Relief

This provision is an avenue for clubs applying for a UEFA license to remove some wage expenditure from its break-even calculation. Annex XI(2) states that for applications for the first two monitoring periods, if the break-even deficit exceeds the acceptable deviation provisions, a club will not be sanctioned so long as:

•”it reports a positive trend in the annual break-even results”; and

•”the aggregate break-even deficit is only due to the annual break-even deficit of the reporting period ending in 2012…[for] contracts with players undertaken prior to 1 June 2010″.

Therefore, even if a club fails to meet the standard deviation target (i.e. a cumulative loss of over €45m) in the first two monitoring periods, the club can, so long as its losses are reducing, remove all wage costs from their 2011-12 accounts for players whose contracts were already in place prior to 1 June 2010. If the club as a result falls within the €45m acceptable deviation limit, UEFA will not apply any sanction. For the sake of clarity, it appears contract renegotiations after 1 June 2010 for an existing contracted player would be classed as a new contract for the purposes of this provision (see Annex XI(2)(ii)). Importantly, this provision would appear to include the wages of a player that has subsequently left the club but had a contract with the club during the 2011-12 season.

Annex XI will provide clubs with greater room to manouvre for the first two years of the FFPRs. This is because the 2011-12 season accounts are included in:

•the first monitoring period (the two year period 11-12 and 12-13); and
•the second monitoring period (the three year period 11-12, 12-13 and 13-14).

Chelsea Ramifications

In an excellent blog on Chelsea Jake Cohen calculates that the club could have benefitted from up to £79.3m of wage costs that could have been deducted if the club’s trend had been positive. No doubt that if the club makes a smaller loss in the second monitoring period (for the 13-14 accounting season), then the trend will be positive and it can take advantage of this cost reduction in the 2014-15 monitoring period covering 11-12, 12-13 and 13-14 accounting periods.

Conclusion

Not being able to benefit from the Annex XI relief (at least for this first monitoring period) according to the latest Chelsea press release appears not to have made a material difference in complying with the FFP break-even regulations. It still however is likely to be a major cost reduction relief for a number of other clubs wanting to play in European competition. To take advantage of the relief, clubs have to ensure their losses are reducing.

Cardiff Named Host Port for 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race

The Volvo Ocean Race will visit Wales for the very first time in 2017-18, when Cardiff will host a stop-over. It will also be the first time the race has been to the UK in over a decade – the last occasion was a stop-over in Portsmouth in 2005-06

Tom Touber, Race Chief Operating Officer, revealed the news during a presentation at the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay.

Touber said: “It is fantastic to be able to announce that the Race will once again stop in UK waters, and a first visit to Cardiff is a very exciting move.

“The competition to host the Volvo Ocean Race has never been more fierce, with over 80 ports involved in the process for the 12th and 13th editions. Cardiff made a particularly impressive bid to win one of the coveted European slots and with such outstanding facilities and great enthusiasm I’m convinced that we will have a stopover to remember.

“The fact that we are making this announcement five years in advance is a very strong signal about the future of the Race and the commitment to it from the Volvo companies.”

Welsh Government Business Minister, Edwina Hart, added: “The Volvo Ocean Race is a truly global event and its arrival in Cardiff in a few years’ time will mark another historic milestone in Wales’ rise as an outstanding destination for world class events. The Welsh Government is fully committed to attracting more major international sporting event to Wales.

“Hosting a stopover in the Volvo Ocean Race will generate a substantial economic boost for the Cardiff and Wales economy. We look forward to welcoming thousands of new visitors to Wales, who will experience a vibrant capital city and a nation with a rich and diverse cultural heritage.

“We look forward to working with the Volvo Ocean Race and its partners, along with Cardiff Council and Cardiff Harbour Authority to deliver a world-class event.”
