Former F1 Team Owner Aguri Suzuki Sets Up New Team in Formula E

Racing team Super Aguri, therapy who had a stint in Formula 1, will join the Formule E Championship grid after founder and former F1 driver Aguri Suzuki agreed a partnership with Formula E Holdings.

The Tokyo based team, a major market for electric vehicle technology, is a brand new venture for Suzuki, who brings with him a wealth of Formula One experience as a driver, team owner and mentor. An icon of Japanese motorsport, Suzuki spent eight seasons as an F1 driver between 1988-95 – competing in 88 Grands Prix – and was team owner of Super Aguri F1 which competed in the sport from 2006 until 2008. Suzuki currently oversees Autobacs Racing Team Aguri (ARTA), which competes in the Super GT series in Japan and runs entries in both the GT500 and GT300 categories.

Super Aguri Formula E now becomes the championship’s second team to be based in Asia after China Racing and the sixth of 10 teams that will be put forward to the FIA for final approval by its World Motor Sport Council. They join leading IndyCar outfits Andretti Autosport and Dragon Racing, UK-based Drayson Racing and e.dams – a joint venture between Alain Prost and Dams founder Jean-Paul Driot who were announced just last week.

“Today is a new chapter for the Super Aguri name and I’m proud that our team will represent Japan in the inaugural Formula E series,” said Aguri Suzuki, Executive Chairman of Super Aguri Formula E. “Zero emissions racing is a progressive concept for the motorsport industry, and after more than 40 years as both a driver and team owner, I see Formula E as a great stride towards the future.

“Japan has always been at the forefront of cutting-edge innovation and technology and our participation in the series will enable us to promote and develop electric vehicle technology not just in our region, but also on a global scale.”

Joining Suzuki at Super Aguri Formula E is Mark Preston, who assumes the role of Team Principal. The pair last worked together at Super Aguri F1 where Preston assisted in the team’s formation and worked as technical director. Also onboard are Peter McCool as Technical Director and Ferry Spijkerman as Commercial Director.

Mark Preston said: “It’s great to make a return to racing in Formula E. Global trends in connectivity, collaborative consumption and the electrification of drivetrains, support our overall vision to turn mobility into a service, rather than a product, especially in the urban setting, where Formula E races will take place.”

Alejandro Agag, CEO of series promoters Formula E Holdings, added: “We’re very pleased to have Super Aguri join the FIA Formula E Championship and to be welcoming yet another high profile name onto the grid. Japan has a long and celebrated motorsport heritage, as well as one of the most prominent and largest car industries in the world, so it’s a real honour to have a Japanese team and we hope this will lead to interest from manufacturers and possibly even a Formula E race there in the future.”

Special Reports: Stadium Management Systems Ltd

Despite the increasing value of broadcasting rights and other commercial income, many football clubs (and many other sporting organisations) are still losing money.

Having failed to achieve financial stability by increasing revenues, football has now adopted various “Financial Fair Play” (FFP) regulations in an attempt to curb soaring payroll costs. The proposed penalties for falling foul of the FFP regulations are very significant including points deductions and disqualification from lucrative competitions. Such substantial penalties will be unacceptable to owners and fans alike so club management will have to examine their cost bases to ensure that their operations are efficient and waste is eliminated.

After player costs, the biggest costs at a club are match day and stadium operating costs and the drive is on to reduce them, but how can club owners and managers reassure themselves that whilst reducing costs their operations are still safe and legally compliant?

The guys at Stadium Management Systems Ltd have set about helping clubs to solve this problem. Having worked for many years for The FA and at Wembley Stadium, Michael Cunnah and Noel Jeffs have got together with Mark Jakes, a leading software developer, to create the world’s first comprehensive integrated stadium management information system.

NoelJeffs_SMsNoel Jeffs has designed the software to be relevant and invaluable to every stadium operator. He says “In my experience as a Stadium Director, it is a real challenge to keep abreast of the huge volume of legislation and regulation that relates to stadium operations. Now within Stadium Manager software it is all accessible electronically and specific topics can be more easily accessed by removing the need to wade through pages and pages of legal documents.

Stadium Manager (SM) software is being launched to support stadium managers and owners by providing the facility to model and plan events. By turning their experience into a template for best practice, SMS Ltd has created a product which does away with the current paper based working practices. In short they have brought stadium management into the 21st century.

Cunnah_SMSMichael Cunnah says “I believe that the transparency that Stadium Manager brings to stadium operations will help everyone involved to see issues more clearly and to make the right decisions regarding costs and safety. It is hard to see how everyone has operated so far without such a facility.”

How does it work? SM software utilises a venue’s plans/layout to develop event plans. Using drag and drop functionality, all roles, fixed assets, furniture and equipment are placed into their ‘event’ positions. The completion of pre, during and post event checks and workflows and personnel attendances are recorded to provide real time status reports on event readiness and regulatory compliance.

StadiumManager_Preview

Safety compliance is monitored through an easy to follow red / amber / green traffic light dashboard system. So, if an employee is qualified for the role to which he/she is assigned to, the relevant dashboard will turn from red to green. Similarly, the dashboard for a physical asset will turn green from red once it is evidenced as checked and deemed to be fit for use during the upcoming event. The individual dashboards are then aggregated to show overall readiness for the event.

A unique feature of the software is its ability to simulate the movement of staff over the whole time period of an event day i.e. pre event briefings, turnstiles open, first half, half time, full time etc. and more importantly, for the implementation of contingency and emergency plans.

Using SM software club owners and managers will easily be able to ascertain how compliant their operation is for each event by checking the dashboards. Where there is red, it is easy to drill down to ascertain which issues need to be resolved.

Because of the quality and high level of detail provided by SM software it is an exceptionally useful tool for table top training exercises. Being very visual and simple to manage it can be used to train managers in preparation for match days. It is simple to demonstrate to stewards and other employees where they are required to be at which times and for what purposes during the event.

For new stadia SM software can be used at a very early stage of a project to optimise the design to provide operational efficiency and eliminate unnecessary costs. SM software affords the opportunity to start the way you mean to go on i.e. by having cost effective and compliant stadium operations from the very first event and for the whole life of the stadium.

In bringing his experience from other industries to the stadium sector Mark Jakes thinks that  “SM software is a powerful tool that really assists stadium managers to properly and professionally plan their events and owners will be much more easily able to reassure themselves that their events are well managed, safe and cost effective.”

Exclusive: Wembley Having Two Regular-Season Game Shows NFL’s Commitment to London says Kirkwood

By Ismail Uddin

NFL UK Managing Director, Alistair Kirkwood, believes Wembley two regular-season games makes a huge statement about NFL’s commitment to London.

NFL UK recently announced that Minnesota Vikings will host the Pittsburgh Steelers along with Jacksonville Jaguars hosting San Francisco 49ers in 2013 and Kirkwood believes fan support has been a big reason why a second game has been scheduled.

“I think it’s a big statement, in terms of support from our ownership in what we’ve been doing. It’s a great reception on how the fans have supported the game. For people that aren’t familiar with the NFL, maybe they don’t realise that an NFL team has eight home game in a regular season, so we are now moving to a 2013 to a quarter of an NFL season, which is quite an achievement,” Kirkwood told iSportconnect exclusively

“Also, we’ve got a lot to learn from how 2013 will go because on the one hand, we have one game in September between two teams that haven’t been over before, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings.”

“And, in the second game, Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers. We’ve got to connect with the Jacksonville Jaguars over the next four years, playing a game each year. That’s exciting because we hope they will be adopted by new fans as a returning team and we also hope that people that have their own allegiances will adopt them as their second favourite team. That will give us a good sense to help us build our team going forward.”

Wembley is currently gearing up for it’s sixth NFL International Series game to be played on Sunday between St Louis Rams and New England Patriots.

Kirkwood also revealed the event had sold out it’s 85,000 allocation two weeks ago.

“It’s great to see the level of fan demand that we had for the game and we’re really happy that this game has sold so well,” he said.
