Chief technical officer for the Lotus Racing Formula One team, Mike Gascoyne, has signed a new contract to stay with the team until 2015.
The team re-entered F1 this season and have yet to score a championship point. Despite this, Gascoyne has signalled his intention to end his career in the team.
Gascoyne said: “Having started the team from scratch with Tony it was always my intention to finish my career here, so it’s great to have formally agreed a five-year deal.
“I’m extremely grateful to everyone involved in Lotus Racing for having the confidence to take this into a long-term contract. We’ve had a great start to our partnership together, and I’m looking forward to continuing that for the next five years, and even beyond that.”
Team principle Tony Fernandes added: “Mike’s five-year deal is a major announcement for the whole Lotus Racing team.
“It shows just how serious we are, not only about how far ahead we are setting our aspirations, but also as a reward to Mike for the incredibly hard work he and the team have already put in to get us from literally four people back in September ’09 to our current position as a serious F1 player with a very bright future ahead of us.”
Gascoyne has previously worked with McLaren, Tyrrell, Jordan, Benetton, Toyota and Spyker,
ICC president says he won’t support Modi
President of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Sharad Pawar has said he will not protect suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi and insists he will face punishment if he is found guilty of the charges against him.
Modi was suspended over financial irregularities relating to the bidding process for IPL franchises, mid-over advertising sales and the sale of theatrical rights.
Pawar said: “No question of protecting anybody. Not only Modi but anybody. If somebody has committed some mistake he will have to face the music.”
He went on: “IPL, the product, has been a success in this country. It has established that India can also organise such things, and there he [Modi] has taken lots of pain, there are no two opinions about that. But his style of functioning has become controversial and the present board feels it should go in-depth [probe].
“The board has deputed a committee; let us see what the outcome is. From what I know of the BCCI [Board of Control for Cricket in India] it will take an appropriate decision and take steps to improve their functioning and image. I am confident that he has to be given a fair trial. But I can’t interfere either way.”
Northern Ireland’s Royal Portrush Joins Open Rotation
The R&A has selected Northern Ireland golf course Royal Portrush as the venue for the world’s biggest golf tournament, the Open Championship, potentially in 2019.
This will be the first time the event will return to Northern Ireland since 1951.
The earliest it can be held will be 2019, however, this depends on infrastructure work being completed and approved.
Peter Dawson of the R&A, which organises the Open, said he expected huge interest from the NI public.
He said Royal Portrush was “one of the world’s truly great links courses” and had a “rich golfing heritage”.
A statement from the office of First Minister Peter Robinson also confirmed the news that the tournament could return to the seaside links course.
Robinson said: “This is wonderful news, not only for Royal Portrush Golf Club, but for the whole of Northern Ireland, with an estimated combined tourism promotion and economic return of £70million.
“The decision to bring the Open back to Northern Ireland is a tremendous vote of confidence in the game here and follows the huge success of the Irish Open in 2012, the first in European Tour history to sell out.
“Today’s announcement recognises that Northern Ireland not only has some of the world’s greatest golfers, but some of the world’s greatest golf courses.”
Currently only nine courses, five in Scotland and four in England, are entitled to stage the Open, the oldest of the four major championships in golf.

Yorkshire Cricket Reveal Headingley Renovation Plans
In order to keep pace with other County grounds that hold international crciket, Yorkshire have announced a 20-year plan to revamp their Headingley stadium.
Headingley has struggled to keep pace with major renovations at Edgbaston and Old Trafford as well as the emergence of the Rose Bowl, Chester-le-Street and Sophia Gardens as international venues.
As a result Yorkshire chiefs feared the Leeds ground could lose out on England games in the future.
That would have been a major financial blow and Yorkshire have now unveiled plans for a six-phase renovation which will include the addition of permanent floodlights, the redevelopment of the stand connected to the neighbouring rugby ground and a new pavilion in the north-west corner of the ground.
Nearly 1,000 seats will also be added to the north-east stand as the capacity is increased from 17,000 to 20,000 and a roof will also be put on the west stand.
Yorkshire County Cricket club chairman Colin Graves said on Thursday: “Our ambitions are clear. We want to create a stadium that is amongst finest in the world and enable Yorkshire to continue to stage major international fixtures over the long term.
“It is vital that we don’t lose sight of our objectives. As other venues around the country continue to invest in their facilities, we cannot afford to stand still and expect that Headingley will always host international cricket.
“The stark reality is that if our stadium fails to evolve we will lose our Test Match status, which would be a devastating blow to the region.”
Headingley will host this year’s second Test match against Sri Lanka, beginning on June 20, as well as the fifth one-day international against India on September 5 and will also host a Test against New Zealand and a one-day fixture against Australia in 2015.
New York Knicks Unveil Team Name & Logo for D-League Affiliate
The New York Knickerbockers’ newly acquired NBA Development League team will be named the Westchester Knicks, it has been revealed.
The team’s logo was also unveiled at a special event at Westchester County Center.
The Westchester Knicks, which serves as the exclusive affiliate of the New York Knicks, will debut in the 2014-15 season, playing its home games at the County Center in White Plains, New York. Following the initial announcement on March 10 regarding the new franchise, the Knicks invited fans to help choose the name for the new D-League team by submitting suggestions online. The Westchester Knicks was the popular choice among fans.
“We are excited for the Westchester Knicks to bring NBA-caliber basketball and affordable, family-friendly entertainment to Westchester County Center this fall,” said Dave Howard, president of MSG Sports. “Thank you to all the fans who went online to submit team name suggestions. We are proud to be extending the Knicks brand to Westchester.”
“We are proud to be the home of the Westchester Knicks,” said Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino. “With the winning combination of the NBA, the Knicks organization, Madison Square Garden and Westchester County behind it, the team is already off to a great start.”
The new Westchester Knicks logo is a modern interpretation of the New York Knicks original primary logo, used from the inaugural 1946-47 season through 1963-64, which featured a smiling Father Knickerbocker dribbling a basketball, the brainchild of famed sports cartoonist Willard Mullin of the New York World-Telegram.
Exclusive: MH370 Disaster may ‘distract’ fans from Buying Tickets says Malaysian GP Organisers
By Ismail Uddin
With the MH370 airplane crisis continuing to engulf the Malaysian region, Sepang International Circuit CEO Razlan Razali believes the issue will likely affect ticket sales and the excitement for the Formula 1 race this weekend.
On 8 March, the Boeing 777, and the 239 people aboard disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to China, with the aircraft still yet to be found. With many Malaysians being directly hit with catastrophic incident, Razali believes it may affect the intrigue from fans surrounding the event.
Speaking exclusively to iSportconnect, Razali said: “Off course the MH370 incident is getting a lot of attention obviously. It has affected mainly Malaysians as it involves our national Airline. It is an unprecedented situation so it may distract people from Formula 1 and buying tickets as well it should be. In some ways it does affect the current excitement about the GP and distract them from attending Formula 1 at this moment. But we will wait and see close to the race whether there are any changes or not.”
The organisers of the Malaysian GP are targeting 90,000 tickets for Sundays race but they have sold just over 60% so far. But Razali expects tickets to sell out fast.
He added: “We are targeting 90,000 tickets by Sunday. We have sold slightly more than 60% so far. Up until the race weekend we expect more interest, traditionally locals buy more near the end.”
Razali, who has been CEO since 2008, also commented on the future of the F1 race in Kuala Lumpur suggesting discussions may be taking place this weekend.
“Our contract ends 2015 next year. We will in some ways discuss the way forward this weekend but we do have some time to decide whether we want to continue beyond 2015 or not,” he said.

Peugeot to Return to Dakar Rally in 2015
French car manufacturer Peugeot has announced it will return to the iconic Dakar Rally in 2015, more than two decades after it enjoyed a dominant spell on the event between 1987 and 1990.
Peugeot has revealed it will enter the gruelling Dakar Rally in 2015 with version of its 2008 small-SUV, driven by former WRC champion Carlos Sainz and Cyril Despres.
Team Peugeot Total’s return comes 25 years after it dominated the annual event between 1987 and 1990, first with the 205 T16 and then the 405 T16. Since then, the event has moved from Africa to its current home in Latin America, traversing a route more than 10,000km in length.
“We are delighted to be returning to the Dakar because it’s an event which enjoys extensive coverage globally,” said Peugeot CEO Maxime Picat. “It is well known in Europe, as well as in such important markets as South America and China. It takes place in South America, with much of the action in Argentina where Peugeot has traditionally enjoyed a strong foothold.”
“[Our decision to compete] obviously follows in the wake of our Pikes Peak victory in 2013. That was a very special moment which showcased what Peugeot Sport is capable of achieving in association with Total and Red Bull. It was a win that gave us wings and led us to take a close look at what other motorsport programmes we could do together. The result of that process was the decision to return to the Dakar.”
Warwickshire Reveal Profit for 2013 Season
Warwickshire County Cricket Club have announced they have entered profit for last season compared to a £668,000 loss in 2012.
The Bears made a profit of £4,500 profit for the year ending September 2013.
Turnover was up £222,000 to £11.74m, helped by the fact that as co-hosts of the Champions Trophy five matches were held at Edgbaston, including the final.
Warwickshire’s catering and hospitality revenues were up 22 per cent year-on-year.
Although Edgbaston was not awarded a Test match this summer, chief executive Colin Povey believes the new T20 Blast competition this season will help their situation continue to improve.
Povey said: “The absence of Test cricket once again in 2014 represents a further challenge before the return of an Ashes Test to Edgbaston in 2015.
“However, hosting India on two occasions and changes to the domestic twenty20 cricket schedule, featuring more Friday night games, are great opportunities that we are looking to make the most of in 2014.”
