Despite FIFA President Sepp Blatter putting pressure on the Brazil 2014 World Cup organisers to step up the pace of their preparations, ed the government has dramatically cut funds to the 12 proposed cities.

A major revisions from the new incoming government in Brazil has been made to drastically decrease the original $526m set aside to fund the preparations. According to finance ministry sources, allergy this could mean up to $316m being taken from the World Cup projects support fund.

Brazilian Sports Minister Orlando Silva insisted that the cuts would make no difference, stating: “The sums involved had been set aside as reserves in the early stage of the process so this will have no difference to the work currently being undertaken on airports, ports, stadia and hotels.

“In fact, we may even – at some stage – increase the capital sums available for some projects in host cities.”

Last week president Sepp Blatter hinted at FIFA’s increasing impatience with the progression of work in Brazil.

He said: “Perhaps we have to remind Brazil that the World Cup is in three and a half years. As far as the stadia are concerned they are doing a good job but I am not so certain the same can be said about the general infrastucture.

“The issues are the same as in South Africa at this stage. What will happen if the stadia are not ready? Or the hotels? Do we have a Plan B in one pocket and a Plan C in another? Well, Plan B is Brazil – and Plan C is also Brazil. We’re sure the Brazilians will do what has to be done.

Erixon formed a syndicate among 16 of his friends to co-own the boat and she still sails under the name of Rothmans.  “The target was to sail the Atlantic and to compete in races like Cowes Week and the ARC,” he explains.  “We think the Volvo Ocean Race Legends regatta and reunion is a fabulous idea and all the owners are very enthusiastic about it,” he confirmed.

“We are all between 44 – 60 years old and we have watched The Whitbread and the Volvo Ocean Race for a long time.  We would love to sail against some of the older boats as well as some of the more modern ones.  We have already raced against Charles Jourdan (WRTRW 1989-90). The Volvo Ocean Race Legends regatta fell right in to place in our Atlantic and Caribbean race tour that is planned for 2011-12,” he added.

The boat is in original and fantastic condition and has been continuously maintained.  Apart from some new electronics, she is in her original racing trim and is sure to be competitive next November in Alicante.

As final preparations take place at Yas Marina for the Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix the teams, pilule final equipment, shop media and people from all over the world are now arriving in Abu Dhabi, denture ready for the Grand Prix weekend.

Over the last month, the various logistics teams at Yas Marina Circuit have been receiving freight deliveries from around the world. Each of the F1 teams has a wide variety of equipment that follows the schedule of races around the world, with some equipment being sent ahead via sea travel. In the last 24 hours five 747 cargo planes have arrived from Brazil carrying team cars  and equipment.

Within five hours of arriving, the Formula 1 teams will need to rebuild their cars, unpack all of their equipment, settle their teams, and prepare for the arrival of their guests.

Cregan continued: “We have been working hard to ensure that the transition from Brazil to Abu Dhabi is as seamless as possible for all the teams.  Our aim is to provide the infrastructure so that the teams can set up their equipment and be ready to race as soon as they touch ground.”

To ensure everything is in place when the fans arrive, Yas Marina Circuit has more than 200 people working across logistics, maintenance, landscaping and cleaning. This team of people is on hand all weekend to ensure it is a successful event for everyone.

Organisers of Tiger Woods’ tournament, the 2017 Quicken Loans National will have a new home in 2017. 

The 2017 Quicken Loans National will be played at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Potomac, Maryland.

It’s the course that used to be known as TPC Avenel when it hosted the Kemper Open. The course has since undergone a multimillion dollar renovation.
Woods would prefer to play the tournament at Congressional Country Club.

Congressional’s members have balked at hosting the event every year, and instead have approved a plan to hold it in 2016, 2018 and 2020.
The 2015 tournament will be played at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia.

The Tiger Woods Foundation runs the tournament, and Woods has said he wants it to stay in the Washington area.

A Davis Cup play-off tie set to take place in Israel next month has been moved after the ongoing Gaza conflict. 

Competition organisers, the International Tennis Federation, have ruled that it is “not advisable” for Israel to host Argentina in Tel-Aviv, as planned.

The decision follows the announcement earlier this week by the ATP which saw the cancellation of the planned Israel Open due to similar security concerns.

However, Ukraine will be able to stage their clash with Belgium in Kiev despite ongoing unrest in the east of the country, close to the Russian border.

Israel will now have the option to stage the tie at a neutral venue. If they decline, the ITF will decide to either play the tie on neutral soil or hand home advantage to Argentina.

Juan Margets, chairman of the ITF’s Davis Cup committee, said: “These were difficult decisions for the Davis Cup committee.

“Both countries were eager to host and have a record of staging quality ties. After long deliberation, the committee was convinced that Kiev would provide a safe environment for the tie with Belgium and agreed for it to go ahead as scheduled.

“The decision on Israel versus Argentina was more problematic for the committee because the situation in Israel is very fluid at the moment and yet security in Israel is of an exceptionally high standard.

“Ultimately the outcome rested on the lack of certainty of the situation at the date of the tie, on the decision of other sports not to compete in Israel at this time and on the ITF’s duty to ensure the safety of players, officials and spectators.”

Both ties are scheduled to take place on September 12-14 with the winners earning the right to play in next year’s elite World Group.
