The public was asked to contribute to the decision on this year’s ROC host via a vote on the Race Of Champions website, Facebook and Twitter. ROC organiser Fredrik Johnsson said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response to our Venue Vote over the past few weeks. We received over 14,000 votes for a mix of different stadiums and circuits all over the world – which will join our list of venues under consideration for future ROC events. Cookson Joins National Federations Calling for CAS to Validify McQuaid Nomination

Following calls from five national federations for the Court of Arbitration (CAS) to validify Pat McQuaid’s nomination, UCI presidency challenger Brian Cookson believes this action would lead to a ‘fair election’.

The cycling federations of the USA, Russia, Canada, Algeria and Finland have written to UCI president Pat McQuaid requesting that the Court of Arbitration for Sport rules on the validity of his nomination for re-election in advance of the election, which takes place at the UCI congress in Florence later this month.

The British Cycling president agrees with the federations and sees no reason why CAS should validify his entry especially due to the recent controversy.

“I can totally understand the desire by a number of National Federations to seek clarity on the UCI Constitution in relation to the nominating procedure and how this applies to the current Presidential election,” Cookson said in a statement.

“Given the nature of the controversy it does make sense to have this matter adjudicated by CAS so that we can have a sound and fair election that is also genuinely robust.”

McQuaid’s bid for a third term as president suffered twin blows when both Cycling Ireland, his home federation, and Swiss Cycling, the federation of his country of residence, opted not to back his candidacy, but the Irishman is attempting to stand for election on the back of nominations from the Moroccan and Thai federations.

However, these nominations will only be valid if an amendment to article 51 of the UCI Constitution proposed by the Asian Cycling Confederation and the Malaysian federation is passed at UCI congress. The proposed amendment would allow a candidate to be nominated by multiple federations instead of by his home federation.

Cookson would run unopposed if the amendment to article 51 is not passed at UCI congress.

USA Cycling and the federations of Russia, Canada, Algeria and Finland have called for a resolution to the impasse to be reached before delegates convene in Florence for the election later this month, proposing that CAS make a binding ruling on the matter in advance of the election.

“At this point, USA Cycling and many other federations believe the answer is neither to sweep all the procedural challenges under the carpet nor to leave these questions open, but rather to obtain a final, incontestable decision in advance of the elections as to whether Article 51.1 allows more than one country to nominate a candidate,” read a statement from USA Cycling president Steve Johnson.

“To that end, we and several other national cycling federations (Russia, Canada, Finland, and Algeria) have proposed that the UCI agree to binding arbitration before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a definitive and binding ruling on Article 51.1’s application.”

The five federations’ letters, addressed to McQuaid and UCI director general Christophe Hubschmid, call on McQuaid to “demonstrate his allegiance to the UCI Constitution” by agreeing “to forego the spectre of any post-election litigation over Article 51.1 for the certainty of a pre-election, binding decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”

WBC Threatens to Expel “any person or institution” Involved in Haye-Chisora Fight

The World Boxing Council (WBC) layed down a warning Friday, by stating they would expel “any person or institution” that is involved in staging the controversial fight between British heavyweights David Haye and Dereck Chisora.

The July 14 fight in London, which was licensed by the Luxembourg Boxing Federation, was scheduled after the pair’s infamous brawl at the news conference that followed Chisora’s loss to Vitali Klitschko in Germany in February.

Chisora, who also slapped the Ukrainian heavyweight prior to a defeat in the WBC title fight, was stripped of his British license following the controversies. He appealed the decision and will have his case heard in July.

Haye surrendered his British license when he announced his retirement last October in the wake of a humbling defeat to Vladimir Klitschko.

But the fighters’ moves to face off in the ring led to wide criticism of both men, along with fury at the Luxembourg federation for sanctioning the bout in the absence of British authorization.

The WBC warning placed the council firmly in support of the British Boxing Board of Control, which earlier issued a warning that anyone helping Haye or Chisora put the fight on would be assumed to have handed in their British licenses.

“We will expel Luxembourg from our organization … as well as any person or institution that has relations with them,” WBC president Jose Sulaiman confirmed in a letter to the BBBC, published Friday by the British board.

“We will not condone such a disgraceful behavior [from Chisora] after seeing that this boxer has no idea of what good behavior is, by accepting to participate in the intent to [threaten] and embarrass the organization of boxing with such an act,” Sulaiman said.

“I am sure the European Boxing Union is on the verge of a strong position against Luxembourg; I am also furious with the promoter who is trying to blast the ethics, honesty and seriousness of the sport of boxing,” he added.

Hugo Boss- a great example of linking sponsorship to the point of sale- Sonja Kreye

Sonja Kreye
With its design competition ‘Dress me for the finale’ to mark the 30th anniversary of its partnership with Formula One team Mclaren, Hugo Boss demonstrated how sponsorship can be linked effectively and measurably to the point of sale, and how brand marketing can be connected to the entire retail chain.

Even before the recent economic crisis, the linking of sponsorship into sales and sales channels had become one of the most pertinent topics in the sports marketing. To effectively achieve sales revenues through sponsorship, creative concepts that extend beyond logo placement and brand visibility are essential.

Hugo Boss sponsorship director Till Pohlmann proposed the 30tth anniversary of the partnership between Hugo Boss and McLaren for a sales and design campaign. Liganova designed a contest where fans and customers design race overalls that McLaren Formula One racers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button would wear throughout the qualifying sessions. The contest was developed into a detailed and sophisticated marketing concept.

“The whole activity wasn’t only meant to be a design push”, said Pohlmann. “We wanted to have a conception that we could use in our stores throughout the whole Formula One season and that is linked directly into the point of sale and furthermore includes all international Hugo Boss markets.”

The outcome was an integrated concept that included online and social media channels (www.hugoboss.com/mclaren; www.facebook.com/hugoboss), guerilla marketing, store events, dealer promotions, specially designed show windows and a season-concluding charity event in support of Save the Children.

The concept’s focus was the season-round global design contest ‘Dress me for the finale’ on the Hugo Boss website. Participants were able to use an online configuration tool to design a race suit that Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button wore at the season finale. During the season, representatives from Hugo Boss and McLaren voted for a winner at every Formula One race weekend. The drivers wore the winning suit in the qualifying session of each race. The overall winning suit was voted for by fans, who chose between each weekend winner, and both drivers wore it during the final race of the season. The contest was limited to the countries around each race location.

The contest was announced via the Hugo Boss website (www.hugoboss.com/mclaren), a press release to all major fashion magazines and the Hugo Boss Facebook page (www.facebook.com/hugoboss). There was also a YouTube video that explains how it worked. In the first three races, more than 7,800 designs were submitted to the jury and the hugoboss.com/mclaren site registered more than 310,000 visits!

The contest was linked to the sales channels by a specially designed ’30 years McLaren and Hugo Boss’ collection that was sold online and in all participating Hugo Boss stores. Together with a special retail marketing package, window design and store events, some of which were attended by the drivers, Hugo Boss offered its retailers comprehensive advertising possibilities and a great story.

“Our target was to establish an integrated and international activation concept with high customer retention and involvement, and to connect it into our retail channels. After only three races, we generated 2,500 leads”, said Pohlmann.

The campaign quickly proved its popularity in retail; many dealers requested and organized store events with up to 200 guests. The Hugo Boss McLaren collection achieved a 44 percent higher sales rate into retail than any other collection. “The integration of the drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button into some of the big in-store events was obviously another highlight and catered for a high customer involvement.”

The campaign achieved further attention using some guerrilla activities involving an oversized inflatable helmet prior to every race. The helmet advertised the design contest and was frequently accompanied by sales promoters.

An event, at which all the suits designed by the fans throughout the year have been auctioned for charity, for 500 to 800 invited guests concluded the campaign. The proceeds were donated to ‘Save the children‘. This activity cleverly integrated corporate social responsibility into the concept.

According to Pohlmann, creative agency Liganova, with its expertise in fashion, automotive and lifestyle brands, was the ideal partner for the project. For many years, the agency has been known principally for the creative implementation and connection of visual marketing into the sales room, for merchandising, in-store and outdoor promotions as well as dealership architecture and brand events. However, under the management of Bodo Vincent Andrin and Michael Haiser, Liganova has developed into a valued consultant for integrated ‘through-the-line‘ brand strategies and campaign creation.
